Off-Grid Garage

2 жыл бұрын

Over the weekend, I was working on the Battery 2.0. The weather was rainy and this finally gave me the time to finish up the battery shelf.
I really wanted to re-align the battery cells to satisfy my OCD. For this I had to make custom bus bars. A difficult decision had to be made on how to close the shelves if either with aluminium sheets or the clear PVC plastic... It wasn't a hard decision and the result looks stunning!
We have discussed so much while building this battery shelf for almost a year, have learned a lot and most of all, we had a lot of fun. Look at this result. AMAZING!
Thanks again for all your feedback and support while working on this huge project.

Hi @Andy @OffGridGarage #OffGridGarage , wow what a journey its been, thankyou so much for taking us along on the journey, side note, not sure about AUS rules but Polycarbonate has a better fire rating than Acrylics and PVC here in the UK, might be a solution for your regulations and give you visibility too, also please still start a few videos saying "hello and welcome to sunny hot AUS with...Amps " and tell us how many Amps your pulling IMHO that's one of your most excellent catch phrases ;-]

What an Epic achievement! That is so beautiful, you can not cover that up! Let’s LED light this shit up, all the way, yay! You have set yourself a very high bar here Andy, and I know you wont let us down, We will be expecting nothing short of a fantastical finale. Don’t brush aside considering a lighting tech team if need be. You could get real crazy and adventurous & also have a sound sensing mode that beats to the music when you have shed party’s. PIR sensors, so LED’s is only on when someone is nearby, red LED to signify individual shelf fault, multicolour SOC lighting, so many possibilities, cant wait to see what u do next, apart from clean up the driveway! Excellent job, this has been a great experience. Cheers

I think the smart shunt would be mostly accurate, because you put A amount of amp hours into batteries 2 and 3, then recconecting battery 1 will take 1/3*A amp hours from batteries 2 and 3 into battery 1 (the smart shunt doesnt see this) so the total amp hours will still equal A it just came out of 2 and 3 into battery 1. So the smart shunt reading will be mostly accurate because you would have lost some watt-hours because of resistance between the batteries, in both connection resistance and ESR of the cells.

The total SOC should remain unaffected so long as there isn't any 'unmetered' discharge while it is disconnected from the other packs. The distribution of that SOC will briefly change however correct itself as you mentioned when the charge cycle approaches higher voltages. The pack with the lower SOC will consume more current until they match. Great videos, love the testing and scientific method you apply!

State of charge, amps in and out, you are on the right track! 👍 The charge acceptance (efficiency) is high enough that charging 2 batteries instead of 3 is insignificant, leaving you with "amps in is amps in is state of charge." If you were running lead-acid you would have higher losses when charging 2 banks vs 3, but even then the efficiency loss is mostly only over about 80% or even 90% state of charge.

It looks great, no question though I worry that the lack of external air circulation will cause electronics / heat sink / battery temperatures to be higher, particularly in summer when ambient temperature and solar charge rate will also be higher. I understand that LiFePo4 calendar aging (or is it cycle life?) is adversely affected by elevated temperatures. Perhaps a vented screened filtered air fan might be warranted?

Solar coke can tip - To see if you are getting the best position for your panels, take a coke can and place it in the middle of the panel - if the coke can has no shadow on any sides besides the bottom, you have the correct position :)

Nice one Andy. I'm only surprised that you don't worry about heat building ..I know it might not be big deal as current might not be so big..but stil i would place small hole on both and then place very fine mesh so all electronics can breath and air can move a bit ..

Top job Andy Has been a very interesting journey through the whole process which has brought up lots of questions that have all been answered. I would have thought the last part of the video would be you relaxing on a BENDED banana lounge with a nice cold S.P.A.T in front of the setup.

Andy.... at 11:17 you admitted what all of us are thinking: OCD!! 🤣😂 Serious though.... you have done an amazing job on that system. Your skills and attention to detail are amazing. Thank you for taking us along on your journey. BTW: If you had used aluminum for the front, you may not have been able to get a Bluetooth connection to the BMSs.

Thanks for all the information and experiments. Would it be possible to make a last overview/summary of the final system. I really would like to see a schematic of the whole system and used parts on the DC and AC side. O and what is the preferred battery and BMS. Again, thank you for your efforts and time making these videos.

thought when you complained that you did not have distances to have between the battery so I thought that you have well grass trimmer and the wires to them are usually between 1.5 - 4mm thick and in durable plastic so it is insulating with (only as a suggestion) When it comes to LEDs in the cabinet, it can be good that it can be switched off completely, but another suggestion is that you put small analog thermometers in the cabinet so you can see if the temperature rises now when it is relatively closed and no air is flowing through now
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Line trimmer... I didn't think about that. I have 2.5mm line here... The LEDs come with an app and can be either programmed via timer and also switched of completely. Temperature is a good point. I will have to see what the single BMS say over time. At the moment it is cool down here, so no problems...

Now you NEED LED light strips on each shelf that automatically change colors based on the state of charge of the battery banks! They could flash quickly when charging and slowly when discharging...a steady light means no activity!

It all looks great. I would like to see a video about the EV charging setup. Maybe I missed a video. It would look cool if the car charging cable had LED lights that are lit when charging, maybe they could even be set to light up in a pulse along the cable. Like Christmas lights? I think you get more rain in a day or two than I get in a year.

Thanks Ron. The actual EVSE from Tesla has got these running lights when charging. I didn't make a dedicated video about the charging port as it is just a 16A single phase outlet, connected to the AC panel of the inverter.

You could put a nitrogen purge on the cabinet, it would limit corrosion, add fire protection and no pests would enter. Only if you have continuous ventilation on the garage.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia You would tube it in from a nitrogen bottle, and by using a sensitive pressure meter and a flow rotameter, again, low flow. You can make your own flow meter with a little clear tubing. The pressure measures the difference between atmospheric (room pressure) and the cabinet. About 1 inch of water column would be all you need. It is a standard way of preserving equipment from moisture and oxygen damage.
