A delightful one-reel Paramount musical short from 1930, "Office Blues" stars then-unknown Ginger Rogers as Miss Gravis, a perky young stenographer who has a big-league crush on her dark and handsome boss, Mr. Ross. The film features two obscure Duke/Harburg songs, "We Can't Get Along" and "Dear Sir." Playfully romantic, but with an ending that probably wouldn't have made it past Production Code censors just a few years later.

Def,...truthfully, Ginger's unparalleled cute/playfulness, seen here, always remained throughout ...underneath, as part of her.......slipping out during serious roles/scenes, etc from time to time, ^-^ more so in comedies of course... thus, why... in addition to her as a bless'ed individual, an extraordinarily talented lady, and ALL that is/was Ginger Rogers.... she IS my "Goddess Dame" & favorite STAR of stage & the silver screen.

What a treat. I had no idea a copy of this still existed. What an age of song writing that was, when wit such as Harburg's could be found in such a piece of cinematic trivia.

In the same year brunette Ginger played another steno in the feature-length comedy 'Queen High', starring Frank Morgan. In one scene she sings to cheer up the Great-Depressed men running a women's lingerie business, accompanied by Charlestoning girls in petticoats. One of them, high-kicking and tapping on a table, is the 17 y.o. Eleanor Powell. Two youngsters unaware that immortality was lying in wait for them.

The music is probably provided by Nat Finston and the Paramount Studio Orchestra- they had a way with jazzy dance music few studio groups could match.

I'm so glad to have found this. Truth be told, the two songs are the stars of the show--wonderful, literate lyrics--but Ginger Rogers does what she can with little support from the other cast members. Curious to have a dance number with Ginger in it NOT dancing! Thankfully, Hollywood and Busby Berkeley got things organized a couple of years later. If a star was born in Golddiggers, then this (still rather endearing) short embodies the labor pains! Nice to see Ginger in this one.

Even at 19 Ginger could put over smart lyrics (Yip Harburg's) and act her way through a song. Her face is so mobile. Fun fact: the girls on the big notepad were choreographed- if you can call it that- by an Italian American dancer called Maria Gambarelli. 25 years later she played the heroine's boss at the Torino fashion house in Antonioni's 'Le Amiche'.

It's Vernon Duke and 'Yip' Harburg. Their most famous collaboration is probably "April In Paris." Harburg is best known as the lyricist who collaborated with Harold Arlen to write the songs for "The Wizard of Oz."

@@garymazzeo3490 It is an interesting idea but it doesn't seem to work when you try to shoe-horn it into the known facts of Lela Rogers' life. B. 1891 Council Bluffs IA, married 1909, child died during birth 1910, daughter born 1911 (Ginger) If Ginger was b. 1907, Lela could physically have had a child at age 15 and been unwed. But losing the oldest child during birth when Lela was 14 and unwed is implausible. There is the difficulty of the gravestone marked 1910. And how do we account for the father William Eddins McMath traveling to Salt Lake City for their wedding in 1909 when they had already had two children ostensibly b. 1906 and 1907? It is known that Ginger was born in a house in Independence Mo, and it is known that Lela had left/fled her husband to that place in 1911. It doesn't pass the eye test, either. A person's features often change dramatically between 18 and 22. You can see it happen onscreen in actresses like Keira Knightley, Carrie Fisher or Scarlett Johansson. Ginger's features change dramatically onscreen between 1930 and 1934 and change very little over the years after that. And, it's difficult to reconcile the interviews with Ginger's Ft. Worth classmates who would surely have talked about a 19 year old high school freshman but didn't. They thought Ginger was the same age as them in 1925 when she won a Charleston contest at age 14.

@@user-mx2uc9ue3t Most of the major female stars in the late 1920s and 30s shaved four years off their age Crawford, Norma Shearer ,Jeanette MacDonald .The lie didn't end with them.Their families backed them up also.Sometimes mama,grandma brothers & Sisters were made older then the star .One of Gingers classmates said in the 1970s They both were born in 1907.Adding school records don't lie

@@garymazzeo3490 indeed they did, Jean Arthur did, Marlene Dietrich too and so did many others.. Doris Day kept up her story for decades. But these simple inquiries I provided make their stories fall apart very quickly. The later dates do not fit the facts surrounding them and their families. On the contrary, when you apply them to Ginger Rogers, it is the earlier date that doesn't fit any known facts (not guesses or claims but facts).. It is hard to imagine that someone would go into a cemetery and replace an infant's gravestone to support such a story. Nor could the property documents in the Missouri courthouse have been falsified.. It is an interesting idea, but alas, completely insupportable. The alleged classmate is a single source that can't overcome so many diverse and concrete facts.

This one reeler has Helen Kane written all over it. The song is sung in the Helen Kane style except it ends with la da da dum instead of boop boop a doop. Ginger has an identical Kane's hair style as well.. Both were at Paramount at the same time. Kane was a bigger star but was putting on a little weight and Paramount was looking for a thinner and prettier version of Kane. Kane could sing better, though in her baby squeek. Kane was the inspiration for Betty Boop.

Right, she sings it in the cutesy style of Kane. Her singing in the Ginger and Fred movies was more conventional..

Strangely enough, in an interview the orchestra leader Paul Ash said that Kane got the idea for the Betty Boop sort of voice from Ginger, NOT the other way round. Helen was indeed the earlier star but if you listen to her recordings you can hear her rather thin though pleasant soprano which suddenly and dramatically changed to the BB style. Ash, who employed both stars at various times, said Kane saw Rogers' act and, as vaudevillians always did, "borrowed it". Rogers herself also hinted a couple of times that Helen Kane had borrowed her act but Ginger abandoned it when she went onto Broadway. Her earliest films, though, showcase some of her vaudeville routines. As late as 1934 she was still selling her routines, check out the incendiary burlesque in Upperworld !

A quick bit of Wiki research after reading polistra's post reveals- Elinor Glyn- Author of mass market women's erotic fiction. Schopenhauer- Philosopher who believed emotional, physical & sexual desires can never be fulfilled. Lohengrin- Fictional romantic Knight who was sent to rescue a maiden. The lyrics are very clever!

Ginger's real name was Virginia, her young cousin couldn't pronounce it and called her Ginger, the name stuck. It had nothing to do with her hair color.
@TellyWatcher1997
@TellyWatcher1997 5 жыл бұрын
@@fhr331 Her hair was naturally chestnut brown with auburn highlights (or so she claimed in her autobiography). RKO studio dyed it a little more blonde (I am assuming a bright strawberry blonde initially) when they sent her to the hairdressers. She has stated that she didn't know they were going to do that and only found out when some dye stung her head during the process. She found that she liked the lift it gave her hair as it showed up better in the black and white movies of the time. In Swing Time (1936) Fred Astaire's character refers to her as having red hair (although it looks blonde in the photograph at which he is looking at the time) so I am assuming her hair kept some of its reddish tints. Just like her pale blue ostrich feather trimmed dress in Top Hat, light yet vibrant colours didn't show up in those early films but they did reflect slightly in the magical depths of B&W.

@@TellyWatcher1997 What a fantastic explanation of why blond likely took off as "the" color. I always noticed I didn't like how brown haired girls looked in old movies, but I didn't know why. Black hair was fine, most men had black hair in old movies, but the brown hair looked bad and was rare to see. Even in this movie I kept thinking she looks so bad. I think your right, the way the light is set their hair just looks wrong when brown, it almost looks dirty and gray, but the lighter blond had a reflective quality that played well on screen, almost giving it an angelic halo or youthful glow. And the black hair was always so dramatic and contrasted well for most actors. While I love old films I know they did a lot of tricks, such as blue lipstick so lips wouldn't be washed out. This film must not have known the tricks, or no budget, because they didn't seem to make her lips pop.

Ginger is a much better dancer than a singer. Her beau is a much better singer than an actor and OH BABY was that an ending for the 30s. I too wish I was around during that time. Black & white, less complicated. But someone said to me, You'd be dead now. Oh well.
