funny thing about this, the Chiefs proposed a rule change a couple years prior to give both teams a chance to touch the ball in overtime. Majority of the teams voted no and one of those teams was the Bills.

It's a tough call. Over the course of a season, the new rule means more overtime snaps, which represent an added risk of injury, and more time needed to recover, so it can affect you the following week(s).

There are videos of the timeout with 8 seconds left in regulation. Kelce points out to Mahomes, that he can get 20 yards if the Bills play him a certain way. At the line of scrimmage, Kelce looks at Mahomes, and Mahomes responds with, "Do it Kelce, DO IT!" With the season on the line, these two play backyard football against the best pass defense in the NFL. Props to the Butkicker for nailing that field goal. He always hits the big ones.

Overtime rules have changed a lot over the years, it used to be that it was just sudden death and even a field goal would end it without the other team getting the ball. When this happened the rule was a touchdown would end it, but a field goal would give the other team a possession. Now both teams are guaranteed a possession so Buffalo would have gotten a chance, but not then
@songsayswhat

Yeah. When it happened to Chiefs v. Patriots, no one cared and kept the rule the same. A few years later when it happened to another team, they changed it. No one, and that includes the Bills, wanted to change it until they got hurt by the rule--a rule that had been around for decades. I'd rather they played a modified quarter. I know they worry about injuries and such, but they already risk that. I'd rather there was no "that score not good enough." Make them play and do the best they can.

Want to know what makes this more impressive? Kelce called both plays on the :13 drive. In the huddle he said if Hill follows him up the seam he'll have an easy catch and down behind Kelce to get a big chunk and save clock. Then he said if Kelce's defender is on outside shoulder coverage he would have a straight shot up the seam for Mahomes to hit him in stride. Mahomes saw that coverage, called out "Do It Kelc" and hit him in stride. Kelce reads and understands defenses as well as most QBs in the league and I do believe that drive was his doing.

OT rules WHEN THIS GAME WAS PLAYED (recent changes occurred for the playoffs to allow both teams possession): if the team with first possession scores a touchdown, they win. If they score a field goal, or fail to score, the other team gets a possession. At that point, ANY points that take the lead wins. Keep in mind a defensive score always wins the game because a defensive score would necessarily mean that the scoring team had 2nd possession.

I was sitting about 8 rows up on the goal line where Kelce caught the game winning TD. I have been going to Chiefs games since I was 8 years old and I have never experienced the pandemonium and excitement that I did this game. When the Bills scored with 0:13 seconds left, I told the two Bills fans next to me that they better not kick the ball out of the back of the endzone because KC had two timeouts left and 0:13 is too much time for KC. I legitimately felt bad for those Bills fans. They were super cool about it all. It would have ripped my heart out.

The old OT rules were first score wins the game, THEN they changed to this (what you're currently watching). Each team gets a possession if the first possession results in a field goal, [or no score] but Kansas City scored a touchdown on the opening possession, so the game is over. Now, the news rules give each team a chance [possession]. College football has been doing this since the mid-1990s. It's referred to as "the Kansas tiebreaker" model from high school American 🏈.

In the NFL during the regular season the OT rules are the first team to score wins the game as long as the first possession of OT ends in a Field Goal. In that case the other team gets the chance to match it or score a touchdown. After that the first score of any kind wins. During the postseason, if the first team to touch the ball gets a field goal or touchdown then the other team gets a chance to posses the ball and try to match it. OT is one 10 min quarter, if the scores are still tied, the game ends in a tie. During the postseason, the OT is 15 minutes long. If it's still tied, they switch directions and add another 15 min.

So, this game was the final nail in the coffin for "a touchdown wins the game in overtime". There had been numerous attempts over the years for both teams to get possession of the ball, but it had been shot down. With as crazy as this game was, the league FINALLY realized that it would be even more polarizing if both teams at least got a shot at possessing the ball and making the game potentially come down to the last few seconds. Now, this rule change only applies in the post season. So regular season games can still end in this way. . .with a touchdown by the first team who gets the ball. But at least it gives the opposing teams a chance to actually try and stay in the game in the post season. The Chiefs lost in 2018 in the same fashion to the Patriots. It just comes down to what team has enough gas in the tank and who wants it more in the end now.

Lol, it's so funny their first reaction was "they don't get to have the ball?". Because that's all anybody would talk about for months after this game. And then they ultimately changed the rules to make it so in the playoffs both teams get a possession. It used to be that ALL overtime games ended on the first score, even a field goal. So all anybody wanted was to win the coin toss and then kick a FG as soon as they got in range to end the game.

Sadly they lost the AFC Championship game that yr to the Bengals. And just so you know .. we refer to them as the Chiefs, or KC . Because there is a state here in the US named Kansas , the Chiefs are not actually in that state , they are in the next state over called Missouri. These two states shared a city right on each boarder called Kansas City. But the Chiefs are in the Missouri side. I know it’s very confusing lol but fans from Missouri get deeply offended calling the Chiefs Kansas. I only mentioned because if your wanting to learn American football this is all part of it. Fans get real into their teams and support them. At that time , it was if only got a Field goal then the ball would go to the opponent and they would get an opportunity. But if you scored a TD in your first possession then game over. Reason being ..it’s much harder to make a drive and score a TD than to get into field goal range . In years past it used to be which ever team scored first even with a field goal would end the game .

Also, in college football the player only has to have one foot down after a catch (sideline throw/pass) and if a player falls down after a catch then they are ruled down, meaning a defender touching him isn't required for him to be down.

The rule at the time was that if you score a touchdown on your first possession, the game is over. This happened to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship in 2019 (2018 season). The Patriots won the coin toss in overtime and scored a touchdown to win the game. No rules were changed. After this game between the Chiefs and Bills, the NFL finally decided to change the rules to allow both teams to have a possession, regardless of the outcome, but only in the postseason (playoffs). In other words, when the rule hurt the Chiefs, no rule change. But when the rule benefitted the Chiefs, time to change the rules.

OT has changed a few times in the past like decade but as it stands if the first team gets a TD they win. If the first team only gets a field goal then the second team gets a chance, field goal tie's them and TD wins them the game. If neither team scores within the time period it's a tie

This game changed the OT rules in the playoffs so that both teams get a chance in OT and play continues until there is a winner.

At that point a touchdown would win but a field goal would give the other team a chance. They changed the rules after this to give both teams a possession no matter if the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown or field goal. As has been mentioned, the Chiefs asked for this rule change a couple of years before because Tom Brady did the same thing to the Chiefs. Amusingly the Bills voted against that and it was not put into place at that time. Crazy but true, previous OT rules were first team to score in any way wins. That meant field goal or otherwise. That was changed a while back.

Bills should have squibbed the kick with 13 seconds to go, which would've taken time off the clock. KC got the ball with all 13 seconds. They boomed the kick out of the end zone, rather than forcing KC to waste time fielding a bouncing knuckle ball and trying to stop the clock.

Love the reaction as usual. If I have one criticism (and it’s not your fault as you wouldn’t be expected to know), it’s that you continue to call them “Kansas.” Kansas City is in the state of MISSOURI and the city actually predates the state of Kansas. Calling them the Kansas Chiefs is a mistake that many Americans also make (though they SHOULD know better) and it isn’t important to many, but it is incorrect. Great video as always though. Cheers!

Guys, the rule is that if the Chiefs had kicked a field goal, the bills get the ball as well. If the 1st team to have the ball scores a TD or if there is a defensive score the game ends right then. That's why the Chiefs didn't just kick a FG when they got down close there.

The Bills kicker screwed up by kicking the ball out of the end zone with 13 seconds left. If he squib kicked it, the Chiefs player would've been forced to return it, and that would've burned some time off the clock

That Man City thing is apt. It wasn't for 17 years (I've heard Josh Allen took the number 17 for that stretch when the Bills missed the playoffs every year, that actually ended with Tyrod Taylor under center but not really being a game changer, so they really did trade up hard to be able to pick him the very next year). But it was for four years in the 90's, and it's been that way for about four years in a row now. They really do have the personnel to do it, but they're just not able to put it all together just yet. (Okay, Madden thinks their offensive line is patchy, but still. Probably why I always try to play the game with Tampa. /aside)

13 seconds. Then the Chiefs kingdom went on the charity for Josh Allen and donated millions of dollars in increments of 13 or 130 or 1300 dollars.

Okay the OT rules have been tricky since 09/10. Before the 2010 NFC Championship Game, the OT rules required only one one team to win FG or TD. After some controversy the league changed the rules where one team who kicks a FG, the other team has the right to score to tie, where after that the next score wins; but if the first OT possession ends in a TD that team wins unless the other team gains a pick 6. Those updated rules were efficient until the Chiefs/Bills OT divisional game you just saw. A lot of people didn't like seeing Allen on the sidelines; ultimately the league changed the OT rules once again where after the first team scores TD or FG, the next team will have a turn unless they get stopped or Int.

Used to be... If you get a FG the other team gets a chance... If you get a TD game over... PM#15 1st year as a starter he lost in overtime to Brady and the Pats because Pats scored a TD on the opening drive. Chiefs petitioned to change the rule...denied! 2 years later the Chiefs win in the same fashion and the Bills petition to change the rule...accepted! Now both teams get 1 chance each regardless.

You guys talking about Buffalo being that team that get so close only to lose. Well you couldn’t be more right they went to 4 straight Super Bowls at one point and lost 4 straight Super Bowls. Oh and you only get a chance in overtime if the team scores a field goal, A touchdown on the first possession ends it. Kind of a messed up way to end it, if u don’t win coin toss you might never touch the ball.

You must react to one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history--- the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. The San Diego Chargers in the playoffs last year. ....Yes, back in the early 1990s, the Buffalo Bills made it to the Superbowl 4 straight years, and lost every time!
