You cant ever hit a quarterback or a "defenseless receiver" helmet to helmet, but once a player establishes himself as a runner its legal to hit helmet to helmet. A reciver is defenseless when he is runnin his route or when he is trying to make the catch. Once the catch is made and the reciver makes a "athletic move" which is basically running upfield or a juke etc. then he is a runner and can get hit helmet to helmet legally.

it's hard for me, I'm someone who loves the sport of football but i've kind of stepped away from it more with the whole CTE thing and knowing the damage being done. Especially college and high school where they aren't even getting paid properly. there's still such an effort to cover it up, too. Even though it's a lot safer, and you're right you can't lead with the crown of your helmet and make helmet to helmet contact, it still leads to brain damage from all the mini impacts. they still say shit like "bell rung" which is a vastly distanced phrase from "suffered a brain injury." It minimizes it big time, which is nothing new I guess. But also I get why people watch obviously because I love the athleticism and the game itself, and there are other sports where brain damage can happen like hockey. Also I watch motorsport, which for a large, large part of its history was basically a blood sport. So I'm not here to judge.
