I'm a big proper football fan, but i have followed the NBA for a long time and one observation is the ex pro doing punditry and banter just ripping on other ex pros is pretty common in American tv. At least ex pros from team sports. So you'll get nfl ex stars on shows just razzing each other. I think it's a case of they can make fun because they've all achieved a level in the game where it's not really questioned. Plus by and large most people know shaq and chuck are not enemies or anything. Also in American sports punditry it's very common to be brutally honest when a guy has a bad game like the comment "well your team is bad" or "he had one point more than me." In England people are often reluctant to criticize unless a guy just had a howler. The ESPN FC show on ESPN is a football show and yeah they talk football like today's champions league games but a lot of the show is the host and commenters just making fun of each other. Often it has nothing to do with football.
