How to fit a Velux

Here we show the process to fit a Velux in a dormer window - the process will be exactly the same in any sloped roof and with almost any size of velux.
The flashing kit is needed around the outside, but that is most often done by the roofers so I haven't shown that here.

Great installation video. Thanks. Just a quick one. Where you slot the plasterboard at that angle. Isn't there a cold spot behind it as there is no insulation?

Not quite, as it is within the thermal envelope of the building already, and the frames of a Velux are insulated. So while there's a gap behind there, it's unlikely to create too much of a cold spot.

Have you tried splaying the opening before? Just fitted some key lites in my loft and was determined to splay the double trimmers, damn hard to work out haha!

It's quite tricky to do - especially on the sides, because you need to have the opening made by the rafters, and you can't have that too wide otherwise the window won't be seater properly...! It's easier to do it at the top and bottom, but getting the sides splayed out is really not as easy.

The cill should be plumb and the header should be level if one wants more light, 👍🔨🇮🇪
