The Netflix limited series "When They See Us" tells the story of five teen boys of color who were wrongfully convicted in 1990 of raping and leaving a white female jogger for dead in New York City's Central Park. CNN's Michael Smerconish talks with a former NYPD officer who made arrests in the case. #CNN #News

James Robert : We all know that dramas have to condense incidents, but the essential truth is testable by the fact that all these people, whining about how they look in this, are NOT suing Netflix. They’re just whining. These corrupt a-holes would be better off keeping their mouths shut. Maybe we should keep them talking? And, convict them of something? Just like they did to their victims?

The Armstrong Report includes a number of other details not listed below. -Semen, dirt, and grass stains that were found on Kevin Richardson's underwear (it was argued that the presence of semen on the crotch of his underwear was consistent with the confessions that they were unable to ejaculate while attempting to rape Trisha Meili). Semen stains were also found on Antron McCray's underwear and Raymond Santana's sweatshirt. -Mud was found caked on the front of Antron McCray's Calvin Klein jeans and hooded sweatshirt. The jogger was found with mud and dirt all over her body. Antron said that he fell in the mud while running from the police and then hid there. Korey Wise had washed his clothes when he got home on the night of the attacks. -Blood stains were found on Raymond Santana's right sneaker, Yusef Salaam's jacket, and on Steve Lopez's underwear. The traces on Santana's sneaker and Salaam's jacket were too small to match to the blood types of the victims. Korey Wise's friend's older sister, Melody Jackson, told investigators on the eve of the trial that Wise had confessed to her that he did not rape Trisha Meili but rather held and fondled her leg during the attack (Wise grabbing the victim's leg is in line with what both the surgeon and plastic surgeon observed at the hospital, red outlines of different-sized hand prints on her thighs and lower legs). -As officers were taking Clarence Thomas and Kevin Richardson to the precinct, Thomas began to cry and blurted out, "I know who did the murder. I know where he lives and I'll tell you his name." Richardson said that he knew as well and agreed to give them the name. Then Thomas said that it was Antron McCray. According to the officers, Richardson agreed and said, "Yeah. That's who did it." This was before the female jogger was found. -Detective Michael Sheehan reported that while he was transporting Raymond Santana from the Central Park Precinct to the 20th Precinct, Santana on his own said, "I had nothing to do with the rape. All I did was feel the woman's t--s." This was prior to the police knowing about the rape. -Yusef Salaam admitted to carrying a metal pipe during the evening and stated that he was holding onto it for someone else. Jogger John Loughlin, who was seriously injured, was beaten with a pipe. -During the booking process, Officer Robert Powers said that when he told the defendants they shouldn't be out beating people, but "should be home with your girlfriends," Raymond Santana looked at a co-defendant, smiled, and remarked, "I already got mines," after which they both laughed. The statement was inadmissible in court because it wasn't preceded by a waiver of Miranda rights. -When Korey (then Kharey) Wise visited the scene on April 20th with a detective and an assistant district attorney, he remarked, "Damn, damn that's a lot of blood. Damn, this is really bad, that’s a lot of blood.... I knew she was bleeding, but I didn't know how bad she was. It was really dark. I couldn't see how much blood there was at night." -On April 20th, the day after the assault on Trisha Meili, Kevin Richardson and Raymond Santana supposedly each pointed out the location where the attack occurred. Detectives quoted Richardson as saying, "This is where we got her ... where the raping occurred." -Two of Korey Wise's friends, Ronald Williams and Shabazz Head, told the police that when they encountered Wise on April 20, 1989, he told them, "You heard about that woman that was beat up and raped in the park last night. That was us!" -Dennis Commedo, a boy who was part of the larger group in the park that night, reportedly told police that when he encountered Kevin Richardson in a ball field in the park, Richardson told him, "We just raped somebody." -Two teens who were part of the larger group said that they saw Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Steven Lopez, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, and others coming over the hill from the 102nd Street transverse, the direction where the rape occurred. -When talking about first seeing the female jogger in his confession, Antron McCray said, "We didn't think it was a lady at first when we seen her. She looked like a man." That description is exactly what the two men who found her lying in the ravine four hours later told the police, that they thought she looked like a man. The confusion was due to her slender build and short hair. This connection is important because it's a detail that is far less likely to have been coerced. Statements given by a number of other teens named the five as participating with them in other assaults in the park. When Matias Reyes confessed in 2002, he revealed something that the police had not known initially. He said that he had stolen Trisha Meili's fanny pack and Walkman, which had not been found at the scene. Yet, in notes from an interview with Korey Wise on April 20, 1989, the day after the attack, Wise said that a guy named "Rudy" took Meili's "Walkman pouch" and Walkman. Investigators believed that Wise, who is hard of hearing, had gotten Reyes' name wrong and thought it was Rudy. -A former inmate-acquaintance of Matias Reyes claimed that Reyes told him that the attack on the jogger was already happening when he joined, attracted to the location by the jogger's screams. -The Armstrong Report concluded that "the most likely scenario for the events of April 19, 1989 was that the defendants came up on the jogger and subjected her to the same kind of attack, albeit with sexual overtones, that they inflicted upon other victims in the park that night. Perhaps attracted to the scene by the jogger's screams, Reyes either joined in the attack as it was ending or waited until the defendants had moved on to their next victims before descending upon her himself, raping her and inflicting upon her the brutal injuries that almost caused her death."

@Gary DeBlasio where are your facts? stop stating opinions.. with all the blood (70% blood lost on the jogger) and being in a wooding area surrounded by mud? if they were in such close body contact with her some kind of blood would have been on any of the boys that claimed they touched her.. and someone would have had some kind of mud stain or a foot imprint would have been discovered that matched one of the boys... it's strange that none of the evidence was found on any of the boys? debunk me with facts not opinions if you can. receipts below... Evidence offered at court Four of the five had confessed to police about other attacks, including robbery and assault, committed in the park in other areas on the night of April 19.[5] They also made videotaped confessions that related to the assault on the female jogger. "Unlike the accurate accounts they gave to police of those events, their confessions to the assault on the jogger were wrong about where, when and how it happened."[46] None of the five said that he had raped the jogger, but each confessed to having been an accomplice to the rape.[5] Each youth said that he had only helped restrain the jogger, or touched her, while one or more others had raped her. Their confessions varied as to who they identified as having participated in the rape, including naming several youths who were never charged.[5] Antron McCray said that a "Puerto Rican kid with a hoodie" had been the one who had raped the jogger.[5] Their confessions "were wrong about where, when and how it happened." Although four suspects (except Salaam) confessed on videotape in the presence of a parent or guardian, they retracted their statements within weeks, claiming that they had been intimidated, lied to, and coerced by police into making false confessions. While the confessions were videotaped, the hours of interrogation that preceded the confessions were not.[32] In a pretrial hearing on February 23, 1990, Judge Thomas B. Galligan of the State Supreme Court of Manhattan, who had been assigned the case, said that he would accept the videotape confessions and Salaam's unsigned statement as prosecution evidence at trial, despite defense counsels' objections.[47] He said that Salaam's statement was being admitted as evidence on the grounds that Salaam had lied to police about his age and showed them false identification.[48] Salaam was implicated in the rape by the confessions of the other four youths. Analysis indicated that none of the suspects had DNA that matched the DNA collected from two parts of the crime scene. But results were reported as "inconclusive" by police.[47] Both samples of semen having DNA had come from the same source, a single unidentified man.[32] Since no DNA or other substantive physical evidence tied the suspects to the crime, the prosecution's case rested almost entirely on the youths' confessions.[18] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park_jogger_case#Evidence_offered_at_court have fun taking apart the facts if you can debunk it I would like to see it

Moving forward, do you believe that 5 white teenage kids would have been convicted based on the fact that there was no concrete evidence of them committing the crime. The DA had word that none of the suspects matched the DNA found at the scene. Yes these teenagers were being rowdy and rambunctious in the park. Yes they were causing mischief. However that is what all teenagers do whether they are white black or hispanic we cannot convict them for being teenagers. This is what leads me and other members of the general public to believe that this was racially motivated. These young men were convicted on hearsay and no rock-solid evidence which happens every single day in the black. The problem with that is that in most cases these victims do not have the resources to fight our criminal justice system. People, people, people. Read. Investigate. Get out of your echo chamber. Don't be that person who says, "I got my mind made up. Don't confuse me with the facts. I know what I want to be true." Understand that we all from time to time suffer from confirmation bias, the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs or theories. Also, as a parent, if you have two kids, you know that there are two sides to a story and you sometimes get yourself into trouble believing the first story you hear without hearing from other sources. As Sepp Blatter used to say, "A clock says ding and dong not just ding, ding, ding. In other words, there are two sides to a story. Consider Ava DuVernay as the first of your two kids that you talk to. Don't just watch a Netflix (Hollywood) movie series and think you've got the complete picture. Do what any good parent would do and get beyond entertainment. Watch the Smerconish interview with the Black police officer who was part of the investigation. The Netflix series is not accountable to legal standards. In other words, movie directors are allowed to take liberties with the truth to make their product more entertaining and sensational. Read or watch other material. There's a reason our legal system, inherited from the British, has two sides. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpObbMioqs6Uk3k.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nt2ChN2l1ayaoYk.html centralpark5joggerattackers.com www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/06/when-they-see-us-linda-fairstein-defamatory Finally, consider the following: the media and entertainment industry is not politically neutral and have a vested interest and motivation for making the films they do. They are not neutral reporters of facts.

@Tactical Bacon It's in response to your comment about narratives. People who care about finding out the truth don't care about narratives.
@hello3angel
@hello3angel 4 жыл бұрын
@Tactical Bacon This is not true. A narrative is a storyline that matches your beliefs and perceptions. There is very little that is firmly objective or straightforward about a story narrative in itself. Narratives are full of biases and deception if people fail to incorporate facts and data with that perception, because humans are flawed. The media is full of agenda-driven narratives not backed up by true facts and data, which is why you need to do extra research and find the facts and data yourself.
@hello3angel
@hello3angel 4 жыл бұрын
@Tactical Bacon Exactly, you stated part of the problem yourself. Yes, we must interpret data and facts, but at the risk of potentially skewing it with our own human biases and agenda-driven narratives as I mentioned previously. That is my point. We as humans have to be extremely careful about interpreting data and facts in this way (dangerously moving closer to the mostly subjective and further away from the objective), and I find that people don't use that caution when they look at cases like this. Furthermore, most people don't even HAVE all or even a small portion of the real facts and data of a given case (or even have outright incorrect information dressed up as truths, what I call "false facts") and simply allow their interpretations of what little they know or what false facts they know take the place of actual real facts and data. A lot of times what people selectively choose to absorb aligns, again, with their human biases and agenda-driven narratives. If left unchecked, they'll cherry-pick in ways that only fit their biased views. As you can see, this is a multi-dimensional problem where things can go wrong at many different points. Because of our inevitable human flaws, we really need to go out of our way to try and search for core evidence as close to the original source as possible and to look at ALL of the evidence, not just the bits and pieces of evidence that fit the narrative we'd like to depict.

Gary DeBlasio once again, who cares about the parents, where were the lawyers, where were the ones on those kids side. They were teenagers, and all the evidence pointed to ONE rapist, and the evidence was sketchy from the jump, dude even said they had no evidence and were going to release 2/5 of the boys off top. To top it off it they EVER had any evidence of the boys being involved in the rape, they would have never got exonerated when the rapist came forward, and his DNA wouldn’t have matched all the evidence, ALL of it, and New York DAMN sure wouldn’t have had to pay out 41 million dollars. It was obvious they were used as pawns and this person has no grounds to speak on, now or ever.
