That's what normally happens, you know. An actor only needs to do what the script says, in a way the director approves and that convinces the audience. That's it! If every actor needed to "have a character's mentality down" to do a good job, then most of them would be crap, because most actors know nothing about their characters(they don't read comics, or play video-games, etc). There had moments where actors even admited to not understand the motivation behind their characters' actions, and the director said "You don't need to understand it, your character does".
