Learn to eliminate problems like not standing for exam, backing away from judges, not gaiting, sniffing the ground or acting like your dog is afraid. This video is filled with examples of these challenges and demonstrations on how to eliminate these problems. Please watch this video in its entirety, as it is progressive. If you skip to the end, you will miss very important messages and skills that lead up to the end. Many problems we experience in everyday life with our dog’s stem from one thing, lack of respect. Most dogs really start testing the pecking order between 12 to 18 months. They do things like; step on us, paw at us, lean on us, lay higher than us, and we fail these tests. The better the breeding on many of these dogs the harder it can be to train. That is because these dogs were bred to instinctively do a job and they have very strong working drives to do these jobs. When we ignore, they’re drives and try to focus on other things like companionship or dog shows we are met with primitive instincts. I’ve been making the mistake of thinking our head straight was good enough to move on to adjusting the feet. It benefited me a lot seeing you talk to the guy adjusting feet and tail. We have a lot of work to do but seeing your ways inspires me to keep consistent. Balancing pads are ordered and today we’re working on touch’s and different surfaces. Thank you for your content!

I am new to handling, and I have my first show dog. Your videos are what gave me a start as there are no handling classes where I am in a small part of NB, Canada. He is a 1 year old Bullmastiff but we have been working on these techniques since he was 8 weeks. He has his first show in 20 days (yes I am even counting the minutes...) and I am hoping all the head straight work we did will help his free stack. He was stacking so nicely, then for some reason now he always has a back leg in front of the other leg. I think I have watched every video you have at least 4 times now so I think I am prepared. Him being shown so late is partly due to my need to learn as well. Lots of handler mistakes to iron out...Now just to breathe!!! I love your videos :)

I was wondering how to stop the chain from slipping in head straight, as I don't have a very strong grasp with my pinky finger..

Would love to see setting up a giant breed, (Englishmastiff),heavy weighing headed. Fingers are not big enough to completely hold collar and muzzle As you show it done.

Come to a workshop I have a Jr Handler girl that was taught how to do this with a mastiff, a small lady with a Great Dane it’s all about respect/trust over technique.

Once I have him in "head straight" how long do you hold it? Do you ever reward them with a treat after releasing the "head straight"?

Love how this video shows the details of the head straight. How do I know when the dog has "given in"? We did head straight a couple of weeks ago and had a long "fight" before I finally felt like he had given in. Today was our first try after the "fight"; his head was resting in my grip from the very begining, and I could move it around with no struggle. He is stiff in his body though. In everyday life he is stubborn and always testing limits, this is why Im not 100% convinsed that he has given in so easily. Flat coated male 2 years old.

It comes in stages just like you felt. Many times they will add new things like the body being stiff. Some dogs may even get worse before better. Stick to your guns, be confident, show no negative emotion and prove you are stronger than your dog.

Just love it! I will try this with mine :) But how You deal with the dogs that supposed to be shown in a free stack (bordercollies for example). I know - some show them not in a free stack, but i personally prefer it (and most of local judges also and ofc it looks better imo). Would You start with this method and then just "fade it" or? And how would You start to "fade it" away and get some space between You and your dog (without dog take any steps towards You when you do this "head straight")? Would be happy to get Your answer☺

All dog’s should be taught this regardless. It’s part of you establishing your leadership. I start with a free stack then teach them to stay then go to the hand stack.

Bassets are shown on a ramp, not a table. My basset weighs 45 pounds at 8 months. I can work on the head straight but I can not lift her up from over her top and lift her with one arm!! Once on the ramp, they are stacked. So do I need to worry about the leg lift at all?

If you train your dog to self stack you don't.
