He didn't have to dress up in a costume from head to toe 100 times in those movies. He also didn't have to live up to the expectations of following another hit like he did with The Grinch.

All great roles. But the one that stood out for me was "Me, Myself and irene". The more I watch it, the more I am amazed at how he did that strange kind of role! Very different, especially the scene where both characters inside him argue and fight with each other. Great performer.

I just rewatched it and based on his caliber as an actor, I can see why, at face value, folks might not see this as a top performance for him BUT knowing that this was over 2 decades ago when no leading role had been "monster make up" since The Fly, Jim being able to provide a performance that was engaging for kids is truly a testament to his stamina as a performer and I think he did rely on a lot of muscles/skills he honed doing standup and I think that's why the performance is the way it is. I know that had this film been attempted with our current updates to special effects make up and such - speed and conform wise - Jim might then have been able to give a more layered performance. But damn, I can see why he would never want to do a project like that again.

its not 800 hours. Only the first time took 8 hours to apply because they were still figuring out what they were gonna do. if you watch the interview with rick baker and the rest of the makeup team for the Grinch you'd know that once they knew what they were gonna do, it would only take 3 hours to apply it.

I know my dad wouldn't have 'got' Ace Ventura, but he loved the Mask, with it's song and dance routines (despite being more OTT) - he was like 'who's this guy?!' Even the makeup artist quit during filming. He sought mental health therapy. He knew how painful it was for Jim and it destroyed him seeing Carrey pretty much dread sitting through application, see the shift into madness over it, and know he was part of the cause and he helpless in it. He only came back after Carrey received training and Ron Howard agreed to help him with his green card. The movie was brutal for both of Carrey and his makeup team.

This was a very interesting fact to learn. Goes to show how far actors often go in preparing for roles, and it's amazing how Jim Carrey never broke character once during the film with all that make-up on his face.

People say actors have it easy I can’t imagine how much energy it took for him to do the grinch and even the mask it’s crazy how much he puts into his characters

People only ever see the glamorous side of it- the premiers, rich lifestyle, the popularity, but not the actual work. Big blockbuster actors work around the clock. I recently got into acting in my local community theatre and found out just how much energy a good performance actually requires, even in just a normal costume, so I can’t imagine the energy and patience it took to pull this role off- the caricatured acting style whilst being buried alive in a costume and make up that took 8 hours to apply every day.

I must admit I think Graham’s format makes the actors be more themselves than some caricature that they’re known for and I think it’s great seeing some of those layers peeled away and seeing James Carrey instead of what we all know that Jim Carrey became.

According to the behind the scenes documentary on the dvd, Carrey says that it was like being buried alive and that you could even hit him with a baseball bat and he'd be all "Good morning, nice to see you". I believe him 100%.
