During week 2 of the 1980 NFL season, CBS had three games available at their disposal for the 4:00 later window. And not only did the vast majority of the country get the worst of the three, but CBS refused to change the game off to a more competitive game, with their explanation as to why they refused to do this making no sense whatsoever

In the 1970s heading into the 1980s, CBS really meant Cowboys' Broadcast Station which is part of what made people loathe them.

Yeah, today, they loathe them because they keep beating, The, Dead Seahorse, that is, NCIS, why is this still on, no, seriously, three, spin-offs, got canceled, Mark Harmon's left, David McCallum's dead, and, they've reached, The, Gunsmoke Threshold, Gary Cole deserves better, (btw, I'm aware of its, inexplicably-high, popularity, but, there comes a point at which you must end a popular show for the sake of artistic integrity, that time's long over).

@@marcus813The Broncos broke the rules in order to force the Chargers to wear their blue uniforms in San Diego during the 2003 season. When the Broncos traveled to San Diego in 2003, they reportedly only brought their white uniforms. The Chargers ended up wearing their blue uniforms for that game even though they had originally planned to wear their white uniforms. The Broncos were fined $25,000 by the NFL over the uniform controversy. When the Chargers traveled to Denver later in 2003, the NFL gave the Chargers the choice of uniform color. The Chargers opted to wear blue in Denver.

It isn't just the NFL that CBS did this to as earlier that year (April 6th to be exact) they did this with their NBA playoff coverage. Before I go further, I should point out that this was one of the first times they had aired NBA playoff games live as previously, they would air them on tape delay during this time period often as late night programming at midnight or 1 am. CBS's plan was to air a doubleheader of playoff action with everyone getting Game 3 of the Spurs-Rockets series in the Eastern Conference (very weird to say that) followed by regional playoff action from one of 2 series in the West, Blazers-Sonics or Kings-Suns. For most of the country, they got Kings-Suns which by the start of the 4th quarter was a blowout with the Suns leading 93-69. However like with this, instead of flipping to Blazers-Sonics so that the rest of the country could see how the defending NBA champions were doing, CBS refused to switch games because they thought the Sonics were not as popular nationally as the Suns were even though the Sonics were the defending NBA champions. Then to make this even more crazy, CBS decided to cut off coverage of Suns-Kings with about 3 minutes left so that they could show show highlights of the US GP from Long Beach in F1 that had taken place a week before. Now if you lived in Seattle, Portland or anywhere else in the PNW you got to see Sonics-Blazers in its entirety which the Sonics won 103-86 advancing to the Western Conference semifinals where they would beat Milwaukee in 7 games then fall to the Lakers in the Western Conference finals.

I had no idea that CBS was losing the NFL ratings battle to NBC back then. This mess didn't help CBS' cause. All the criteria for switching those outside the Dallas and Denver DMAs and other markets that requested constant feeds were met, so CBS had no excuse for an inability to isolate certain DMAs. Even FOX, which has long had far more limited switching capabilities than CBS or NBC (able to switch out only its primary games in regional windows to this day), never had this issue. As for that St. Louis/San Francisco game, it was a lot more competitive than Dallas/Denver was, but it sure was sloppy.

That's because WCBS-TV is in New York city, the home market of the New York Football Giants. Channel 2 had to show the local team in that time slot. Similarly, WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV and still a CBS affiliate) showed the same game as Channel 9 is in Washington, the home market of the Washington Redskins. Cowboys totally look like the Seahawks here, so naturally with how the Hawks were at this point Tony Dorsett throwing the handoff about ten yards at 2:47 might have been a window into what his career would have been if he'd have gone there. By the Turkey Day massacre they were down to a washed Lawrence McCutcheon (having lost Sherman Smith early in the season), which you can find out more about that game by clicking the card in the upper right hand corner. Curt Warner made his unofficial debut in a preseason game at Mile High three years later with the Broncos also busting out the whites and MHS in full baseball dress.
