Aqualung, the album” to many, is Tull’s masterpiece. The title track and “Locomotive Breath,” with their catchy riffs, would be joined by “My God,” “Cross-Eyed Mary,” and “Hymn 43” as classic rock staples. There’s no arguing with its commercial success, having sold more than seven million copies and continuing to outsell anything in the back catalog.

Jethro Tull was one my dad's favorite bands. When I was a kid, he would CRANK their songs to 11. It was the most passionate I ever saw him be. May he rest knowing that he bore a son who loves these guys.

I love your comment! I've loved this band since I was 12 in 1970 when my older sister bought Aqualung. Lifelong superfan ever since and still listen to Tull on a daily basis on KZfaq, walking or whenever. Aqualung & Thick as🚫a Brick might still be my favorite albums, but so many it's hard to say..Your dad had great taste in music! Nice way to honor him by listening to his favorite band.😌

I was a high school football manager. I was 12 in 1972. In the locker room we had a single 8 track player with colored lights that blinked on and off. This album was on the machine every day all the time. I fell in love with this band and followed them throughout the ages. Im glad you have this memory of your dad, memories can special like that.

I saw them in concert in 1973 when I was 20. One of the best concerts ever. Here I am in my 70s and this album sounds as good as ever.

Me too... In 1971 when this album first came out I was camping out on my sister's couch. She heard the line "Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent..." and just went ballistic on me. Then she smelled pot smoke on me and redoubled her efforts to demean me for being a disgusting hippie and all that stupidity. So when she took a breath, I screamed right back at her saying something like _"You're on my case about me choosing of my own free will to smoke pot, yet you involuntarily shove Darvon down your 10 year old daughter's throat because she's hyperactive? She's just a kid and you're a hypocrite!"_ Shut her up just like that... But I had enough or her right wing nonsense and found somewhere else to camp out. For the next two weeks my cousin and I drove up in front of her house and blasted that song as loud as his cheepo car stereo could get, just to rub it in. :)

After many years listening to it I came to the same conclusion. It is a perfect solo. Each and every note has purpose, weight and drives the passion in the delivery. The phrasing, the tone, the use and control of feedback, the dynamics and climax. It is a story unto itself. A masterpiece. It needs to be played loud on a top end stereo system or with high end headphones for the full effect.

Hands down. Give the Lynyrd Skynyrd tune Am I Losin' a listen if you are unfamiliar with it. The solo is similar in being melodic rather than show-offy or incendiary like so many other solos.

Jimmy Page had just walked into the control room at the beginning of the solo and was watching. Barre initially wanted to quit the take and go talk to him, but he pushed through instead. Seems to have worked out well.

I'm 67 years old now. This brings back so many awesome memories from my childhood. I bought the album "Stand Up" when it first came out in July '69. I was mesmerized. A week later I went to the store and purchased "This Was". I was 12 years old. Tull was my favorite band. "Benefit", "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" were all incredible albums. In April 1972, my best friend and I rode our bikes to the Forum in Inglewood, CA to buy tickets for the "Thick as a Brick" concert. On 23 June, 1972, we again rode our bikes to The Forum to watch the concert. It was the greatest day of my life to that point. It was the concert of a lifetime. Great music, unbelievable musicianship...even a lot of humor! Ian Anderson is a genius. And I felt like the luckiest guy in the world!

My Mom was a big Tull fan when she was pregnant with me. Ian is my middle name after Mr. Anderson. I'm very honored & proud. Aqualung is one of my top ten all time favorite albums. They are so unique & talented. Each & every member. Phenomenal rock band. Right up there with Rush, Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Doors, & Pink Floyd.

Ian is the classist musician, I ever met. In Tucson 1978 we sat and talked. shared a joint. As he was leaving to start the concert, he turned and gave me one of his joints. I should have saved it retrospectively.

My dad passed away this past October and Jethro Tull was one of he's favorite bands. As a teenager he would play this song for me and to this day I'm still a fan of it. RIP dad, miss you 💙

The songs from the 70's were the absolute best ever. So glad to be in Europe during those times. So many concerts, so many friends, beer and girls. By the way Ian Anderson's wife wrote the lyrics to "Aqualung".

My high school rock band learned Aqualung back in 1972, my sophomore year. Took us all day one Saturday. But when we thought we had it, we were really proud of such an achievement. I just wish we had videos. Anderson is one of the greatest composers of all time and will eventually be ranked as such.

Saw Jethro Tull in Germany '80, '81 can't recall... it is one of those things, those experiences, experiences of many, that give you a look around the edges of life, changes you in ways you know not, and feels like yesterday and a dozen lifetimes ago... the true wonder is that such artists exist and that they all share a glimpse of what we hope, but cannot see... it is us that must change the visions we see today to what we wish we were seeing... strength in one, strength in tens of millions of ones.

I saw them in Munich in the spring of '81 (the 'A' tour). Back then there was festival seating, so if you got there early you were in the front (which I was). Great experience.

Saw Tull in concert on the Jersey shore one summer. With my first wife. Who knew that life would be blown away and I would spend time broke, alone and on the road! Seeing the world with a new set of eyes. Years have gone by. I am sitting on a country hill, housed,well fed, loved and protected. Proud to say I have spent my life helping others as an EMT, firefighter, public investigator. I have seen the world thru Aqualung’s eyes.

I was just a rebel teenager in Mérida-Venezuela about 31 years ago, when I was captivated by one of the most powerful mixture of sounds that came to me through the radio. So I started recording the Jethro tull's songs using cassettes to repeat on and on the great sound experience. It was a very good time to remember.

Absolutely wicked video of jethro Tull aqualung I had loved the album aqualung since I was 8 years old my uncle vic had introduced me to listen to this in 1972 I am now 58 years old and still listening to this it is a progressive rock masterpiece and I thank my uncle for introducing me to it my uncle vic had sadly passed away a week ago he would be sadly missed…..

I always thought this song, with its empathy and social justice theme, was an outlier on the album and for Jethro Tull in general. Not that I think Ian is a hard-hearted person or anything, but most of the Tull songs tend to be about thinking for yourself, seizing the day, and so forth... more of a libertarian theme. I always figured he included this one on the album just to butter up his woman, who had a hand in writing it.

Weened on this album. (sic) Addicted and hooked the first time I listened to it. What a year '71 was. Anderson, Zappa and Gentle Giant that year. At least I can still see Ian preform. What a great treat that is.

Great record. "To Cry You A Song" & "Teacher" alone make this a must have for Tull fans and classic rock aficionados alike, not to mention the rest of the album. To me, Martin's riffs & chords in "To Cry You A Song" are just exactly perfect. 🎸

People shrinking their worldview ("turned our gaze from the castles in the distance, eyes cast down on the paths of least resistance") , distorting facts ("slandering the sacred halls of truth"), hypocritical leaders, people and leaders driven by animosity, disdain for experience ("scoffing at the wise"), leaders acting out of anger or negativity ("ancient nobles showering their bitterness on youth"). It was just something that lyrically seemed interesting and topical back then, but 40 years later still seems very topical.

Hot damn, it may have been worth the 50-year wait to get an official music vid for this song. How many times did we listen to this album over and over when it came out.
