I remember my father told me that in 1971 Phil hickerson lived next door to my parents in the same apartments in Memphis. Him and my father used to pal around together and drink beer. Also my mother and Phil’s sister were good friends and went to high school together in Memphis.

@@dustinwilliams7542 Yep, it's just a matter of identifying what sells at any given time, and giving that to the fans. In Hickersons day, it was more about being a believable tough guy, and making the audience feel like they were rooting for one of their own. Sammartino and the ethnic fans in the northeast is a good example. But by the mid to late 80's, it was more about cartoonish and/or larger than life characters who didn't have to be able to go in the ring, but had charisma. Say whatever you want about Warrior or Hogan or Dusty, etc, but they had charisma and fans ate it up.

There's an old saying: Never fight an ugly man, they got nothing to lose. Phil Hickerson was what my grandfather used to call Mud Fence Ugly, he was Ugly in every sense of the word, when he was in the ring (and not doing the cowardly heel routine) you didn't see any classic scientific spectacle, you saw a Katey Bar the Door, Back of the Barn brawl! I think '76 was when in Birmingham they had the battle royal where Jackie Fargo got stuck alone against Hickerson, Condry and some other heel, got it down to him/Hickerson, Condry threw Hickerson brass knuckles and Fargo got beat bloody as hell? But no calling brother, he just eventually got better and came back weeks later. Fargo was my favorite and I hated the other two. Re: Bounty Hunters. I remember them repeatedly pile driving a brand new but already obviously a future star Tommy Rich into the floor. This was way before Tommy or Dennis hit TBS

It was honestly one of the most coherent fucking promos Helwig ever did! I'm a big Sting fan, have been since Crockett first bought out Watts. So it was weird seeing him so quiet and almost clueless. Hickerson was so right about Hellwig and Sting at the time. I just saw that segment for the first time about week ago. Hellwig and Sting at the time were what Dutch Mantell described as "worse than horrible." They even put Dutch as their manager for a while, before Jarrett told them he was sending them to Bill Watts. Before I saw that segment, I had never heard of Hickerson, but he was what wrestling was in those days. You didn't have to be 6'8" and chiseled, and do high spots, you just had to kick ass!

@@jocam21 You need to learn what "out of shape" means. There are fat people that run marathons; they're not out of shape. Physiques are important to a body building competition, but not overly important for a wrestler (when wrestling was serious) if they could work and cut a promo. The early UFC shows proved that muscles are meaningless in a fight, and people knew it back in the old days. Warrior couldn't do either of the aforementioned things and was worthless as far as the wrestling business is concerned.
