Yep, it's not run like a business, because it doesn't have to be. Similar to WCW which was run more like a subsidiary "brand" not funded on merit but on how much Turner was willing to spend on it. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if WCW had hired Paul Heyman instead of Vince Russo. That and he would need Gabe Sapolsky and a few others to shadow him. Fully financed or not, Paul CANNOT do it by himself. People forget, it wasn't just the bounced checks. He was running himself into the ground. Gabe did the same in ROH's golden era. But you've gotta have a support system and a safety net, as it would be national television.
@SonnyK248
@SonnyK248 Жыл бұрын
@@Lunacyk Well yeah in this instance Paul would only be in charge of creative. And when Russo came over he took Ed Ferrara with him so I'm guessing Paul would be able to bring guys with him too. It would be like when he was in charge of Smackdown. Which funny enough was built around him booking legends like The Undertaker and superstars like Brock but also elevating the Guerrero, Benoit, Edge and Rey Mysterio into main eventers which is just what WCW needed at that time. They had the young talent like Rey, AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, The Natural Born Thrillers stable had some solid raw talents. Plus he could have just gone to ECW and signed RVD and a bunch of other stars as that place was about to shut down. Paul was an expert at taking chicken shit and making chicken salad out of it about as well as anyone has ever done, especially back then. Imagine him working with Sting, Goldberg, Booker T, Steiner, Flair etc. Even guys like Kanyon, Konan, Vampiro and Bagwell would have been interesting in a Paul Heyman environment. Basically if you could do one or two things well, Paul could make you a star. Look, promo, wrestling skills. If you were good at two or even just really good at one he could find a way to get you over.

Wouldn't change anything - Warner AOL wanted out of wrestling because it didn't fit their brand. Even if ratings had held up the executive's didn't want WCW on their Network anymore - allegedly WCW was still profitable when they sold it all to Vince for $1, that's how bad they wanted it gone. Hayman being the booker wouldn't have changed their minds.

I don't know why people backstage fantasy book for AEW. AEW has (or had) Jim Ross, the veteran wrestling minds of Dean Malenko, Jake the Snake, Dustin Rhodes, Big Show, Mark Henry, CM Punk, and William Regal. Not to mention, Jim Cornette literally giving away advice on his podcast for FREE. And Khan STILL books the way he does and allows guys like the Elite and Hangman ignore advice and "wrestle" according to their vision. Nothing will help AEW until Khan humbles himself and listens to common sense.

Heyman would help, a lot. But what AEW lacks is a level of seriousness from the workers than only a complete overhaul of the roster could revert especially when it comes to the top stars. MJF is the exception, the elite is the trend in that company and i think if tomorrow Tony Khan would have the guts to cut ties with them, everything would improve overnight since the boys would have better examples to look up on rather than people who go to business for themselves at the expense of the betterment of the company they work for

Yeah this question is actually a huge example of a massive problem wrestling has had for decades i.e. severely overelying on past guys (obviously i know Heyman is around but he's not exactly a spring chicken) constantly. Wrestling is dead mainstream because of looking too the past and not building for a future hence the multitude of issues wrestling has now. Fans are also part of the problem i.e. "I miss the AE, the 80's, Oh look Austin came back" etc.

The stories were better in the 1980's but that required a thin veneer of Kayfabe. Watching some of the "best of" matches on Peacock opened my eyes to the reality of the matches. Go back and watch Flair vs. Harley Race, Flair vs. Sting, or most of the 1980s stuff. It is boring in an age of MMA. It was even boring for the time. The Road Warriors popped so hard because they were fast aggressive and completely different. The matches of the 1980s would flop hard in the modern age. Yet, a lot of fans still hold those matches as holy.

Paul had a full roster with ECW, so he can handle one. And he was able to make the product interesting. I never was bored with that promotion, even when the major stars like Taz, Sabu, and Shane Douglas left. Just don't let Paul handle money or business. As far as what the product would look like, you probably did not watch or follow ECW. He provided what the people wanted. It was not all weapons all the time. It had great technical matches, brought Lucha Libre to America, had highflyers, Japanese Strong Style, traditional wrassling, and other forms and the ECW crowd ate it up giving "This is awesome!" chants to all of them. Remember, New Jack left SMW and went to become the most popular wrestler in ECW. That's what Paul E can do.

I think he can't fix it. Tony Khan hates when someone wants to tell him what should be done and he wants everyone to see his vision only. Tony Khan has legitimately some of the best veterans in the business working for him, like Jim Ross, Arn Anderson, Jerry Lynn, Mark Henry, Dean Malenko, Christopher Daniels, and now former employees like William Regal, he chose The Elite over all of them. The Elite have like at most a decade of wrestling experience, the actual veterans have worked in WWE, NWA, WCW, TNA, ROH, and some worked in the business for more than 2 decades. What's the point of hiring Paul Heyman if Tony doesn't have the balls to shelve The Elite in favor of veteran minds?

The only positive thing I could say about Heyman going to AEW is he wouldn't go broke the same way (buying tv time). His on screen talent should not be confused for his ability to run a wrestling company and if he went to AEW almost nothing would be different. Largely it's the same model as ECW already: the roster is built the same way, the "top" talent is given a free hand to do what they want, some of the boys are doing "office" work. I'm sure if can be described better then I am but Heyman is a better agent polishing a thing then creative running it. Dixie not giving up a piece of TNA is just a story, probably that Heyman came up with. In the fall out with Billy Corgan we found out there were pieces all over town. My speculation is that Paul came up with that story to baby face himself while he was never really in consideration on the other side. Instead is was probably offered something lower like a place on the creative "team" and that's what he turned down if he was ever even offered it.

100%. Easiest job he could get at this point while still getting national tv time and paid. Gets along with the current regime and can probably cherry pick who he wants to manage on screen. That’s a lot to give up at his age, especially when AEW talent already doesn’t listen to Jim Ross or any of the other old school vets there.

If Paul Heyman had had Tony Khan's father's money in 1994, ECW would have been formidable. They came along at just the right time for that era and inspired the Attitude Era in many ways. I'm sure Paul would do a better job than Tony, and after all these years, maybe he's mellowed out a bit on the more insane in ring stuff that ECW did back then. The promos and the storytelling in the early days of ECW, probably 1994-98 or so, was terrific because they still had the talent on their roster to do it. By 99, everyone, including Shane Douglas, their top heel, had left to make more money. But I think if Paul and Jim could coexist in a wrestling company, it would be terrific. Unfortunately, I think both of them would need people to manage the finances of the company, because both of them struggled with that.

I dunno why people ask questions about alternate universes that veer so much from reality. Like wondering what JCP would have been like if Magnum didn't have his accident is one thing. This one requires AEW to be something other than a company that exists to buy the owner friends while he plays fantasy booker on a grand scale and for Paul Heyman to be in a different place in life than he is. It's too much of an idealized scenario to be a worthwhile thought exercise.
