Officials urge public to respect wildlife at La Jolla Cove

An important reminder for anyone visiting La Jolla Cove - if you’re going to check out the wildlife, admire seals and sea lions from a distance.
This comes after a viral video showed a girl throwing a stone at a sea lion earlier in the week.
In the video, the animal is startled and lets out a growl before a lifeguard is heard asking the girl to leave.
“They crossed the line concerning the animal; they’re not here for us,” said San Diego resident Steve Palmer.

I mean I know la jolla doesn't need the money but the smaller communities just sit there and write tickets as tourists come out with no chains in the snow. it's a cash cow and drives the point. If La Jolla takes pride in their natural beauty they need to protect it. Go down there on a busy day and you find retirees protecting seals while the cops jerk off in their tanks nearby.

Wow I am so grateful that I got to experience San Diego in the 90s. I remember swimming in that cove mid-morning on Saturdays, with maybe just a few other people there by 8am. We'd kayak out to the kelp beds and sometimes a sea lion or otter would pop up. The sea lions mostly hung out on the rocks. No one had camera phones, never saw any cases where people pursued the animals...living in a high-trust, culturally-cohesive society was great.
@eversnajera
@eversnajera Жыл бұрын
That’s the sad thing. There is still cultural cohesion. There is no shortage of rudeness. The actual culture has changed. Kids are only as good as the parents they emulate. The 90’s was simply a different time. There were workers rights and pensions. Now we have 401 k’s and right to hire, right to fire. The more the inner workings of society crumble, the more the outer layers we actually see will too. Everything is breaking down, but we brought ourselves here. That’s the problem with associating morals with politics or culture as well. No matter your politics or culture, there is right and there is wrong. Politics are simply how we deal with something once that has been evaluated. I think we’ve forgotten that. Audacity is rampant and it’s what gets public lands shut down and sold to private bidders. And the very ones to provoke it will be the first to publish a blog about a conspiracy theory that in no way involves them. Giving away their mana like it’s Halloween candy.

@@RedPanther879 nope it was the cove, why close off a beach to any of the planet's creatures? I have spent many days watching the sea lions at the cove, they weren't there in the 1970s and 80s, and one of the most interesting things to me is how bad they treat each other. The biggest ones always win, they don't care about a pebble. Plus imagine the lesson the kid could teach to all her friends back in Indiana if she gets bit. If you want to see something gnarly look at how killer whales treat sea lions.

They do elsewhere. Where I live there are a couple of beaches known for having seals come ashore during the mating/breeding season. The authorities close the beaches to the public during this time for the comfort of the seals but also the safety of the humans [seals can inflict nasty injuries just like sea lions] then they open them again once the mating/breeding season is over and the seals go back to living most of their life at sea. This is in Europe by the way.
