The Worst Summer of My Life occurred in 2017. the year prior, my mother lost her house due to drug addiction and i was forced to move in with my father and stepmother halfway across the country who were hostile to me the entire time i lived there. after a year of school, they didnt want me around so they sent me to my mother, who had relocated to hawaii on "vacation" (she was homebumming). i spent about 2 months sleeping at random peoples houses and on the beach getting dragged around the island while she was looking for booze, coke, and meth. time moves slowly when you have absolutely nothing to look forward to; every second of each and every day is as significant in my memory as the one before it. i would walk around in the beating humid heat sweating up the same pair of clothes i'd worn for weeks straight, thinking about how i'd get my next meal, with the existential terror setting in that this may be the end of my life, that i may never gain a footing in the real world and be doomed to wander the streets as a homeless person on an island far from home. the only solace i had was that the soundcloud app caches the last few songs you'd listened to even if youre offline, one of which was this exact song. i would play this song on loop for hours every day, and completely escape into it. it was my freedom from hell, the last little bit of hope left in my life preventing me from ending it completely. i started seeing visions when i would listen to this song, each drop with its own landscapes and colours. the final drops to this song became my only source of humanity, there is so much energy and emotion surging through those chords as they crash over one another like the giant pacific waves that would emerge at dusk. i had reached the deepest darkest depths of escapism. i had gotten in contact with my father a number of times, but it wasnt until the situation had gotten "bad enough" that i had convinced him to do something about it. he contacted the local police who helped me get to the airport and sent back to the contiguous united states. as soon as i arrived, i chose to live on my own in vermont, where none of my family resides. i was 17 that year. this song got me through the toughest time of my life. just as the song grows and collapses with each drop, childhood is like a series of dramatic events slowly unfolding, and just as the drops get more and more intense before exploding into an emotional crescendo, the events grew in intensity until finally pushing me to my very limits with my summer in hawaii. i turned 22 recently, and i am very proud of who i've become since. those first years on my own were very tough; my mind had been completely broken and exhausted and i spent alot of time smoking weed and hiding from the world outside my bedroom.. but i have slowly shaped my life into one i can be happy with. listening to this song reminds me that it can always be worse, it makes me grateful of the friendships i have, and my bed, and my car, and my computer with its big fancy speakers.. a life i had built for myself from two pairs of clothes in a backpack. i would like the thank virtual riot for giving me hope during The Worst Summer of My Life ❤‍🔥
