Part of world where I live and farm, hay bailing is some thing entirely new for majority of farmers. Green fodder cut and chopped daily is feed to cattle. With changing times and technology I am also gearing myself of hay usage/ bailing. Plan to start with a rotary drum mower 😊. All this equipment, specially made in west is so dam expensive 😊🥰🙏. Happy farming mate, don’t lose heart

My tips and tricks. Keep belts the same ages. Splices the same lengths roughly. These 2 items mean the belts stretch evenly. Creating a even non barreled bale. Concentrate on packing the edges. The book says. 1/2 width of bale windrow or full width of bale windrow either or. You need to cary a water type fire extinguisher. A laser thermometer to check bearing temperatures.

Packing the edges was always important. The The middle will fill up as you weave. Twine is easier to work with. Net wrap is good when you roll hay for others. Takes much less time to wrap.

From my experience with round balers the noise could be the belt clips hitting the metal drum since the belts are going the opposite way to the cylinder the bale forms on, round balers don't really like the door being closed and no hay in the chamber for too long, also everything echoes in the empty space! Although I like balers with control boxes they always seem to be bleeping about something, my first round baler was a Farmhand/ Vermeer 504C with one cord that worked the twine arm and apply the string and the other to cut it...... never had a problem!!!

I owned the model 654 that preceded yours. Had to rebuild the pickup at the approx. the same bale count as yours. At 7K bales, cam track bearings, guides etc. are worn out. That's what causing most of the noise when running empty. Would advise you to pull the pickup out and overhaul ASAP before it has a litter of puppies when rain is coming! You did buy a great baler. It's as dependable and functional of a rd. baler as ever designed. Good luck!

I have a 664, the banging while you was outside the tractor is the feed roller gears being worn, no big deal, mine has about 6.5K bales and does this. The loud noise when you initiated the manual net is your duckbill hitting the roller, that needs adjusted on the RH side by the net cut. Actuator error is the cut actuator not being in the correct pos at a specific time as the bale is made, not cutting on mine was that the netting was not correct for the NH's, they are pretty sensitive to the net.

@Official Welding & Farming Archive I am just curious what you have written on the side(s) of the baler, in what looks like white or silver Sharpie (or paint?)? Are they reminder notations for some type of settings? Or a list of things that you are finding wrong?

Sorry to see/hear that you might have gotten a broken baler.......Maybe our family simply got fortunate to buy used machinery at dealers that took their jobs, and customer service, seriously. But whenever we bought used hay equipment (swathers (2); square balers (3); big round baler (1); accumulator & loader attachment/fork (1); hay rakes (2))...or our tractors (5)... the dealerships always allowed us to test operate the equipment on their properties, before we ever paid for the machinery. During the decades that we farmed, the only brand new equipment we ever had were a JD swather; a JD square baler; a JD round baler; and an 8-"spinning wheel" type of rake (brand escapes my memory).

nice bales Steve, nice when a used equipment buy works out. I'd suggest another 2 fire extinguishers, you've got about 11 seconds on that single, not enough for a belt friction fire.

From what i can tell, the knife need to be resharpened, (professionally). And it has to be tensioned correctly, (that procedure is in the book). Make sure the brake is is actually stoppinng the roll when it is supposed to quit. Finally some balers only like certain brands of net wrap

Bought myself a cheap soft core baler. Had some problems the whole first year. Sloppy bales. While putzing around last week I found the diagram inside the side panel with instructions on making denser bales. Replaced 30 pickup teeth. I'm eager to test it out again, feeling much more confident this time around.

It’s a good baler just have to fine tune it,by reading operators manual,I have exactly the same baler in NZ and can do more than 450 bales in a day! That banging noise when empty could be the rollers in it have dents and are touching each other when rotating

I have 2 old Vermeer balers. Vermeer company recommends at least an 80 horse power tractor to run those balers. My balers weight 7500 lbs each. My 4010 john deere weights more then your tractor. It handles my balers easy. Nebraska tests said the 4010 tractor puts out 73 horse power.

I saw a guy buy a new Holland baler and the meshwrap wouldn't work properly. The mesh wrap wouldn't cut when it should, it covered the bale with half of the roll, then it wrapped on the roller. Such a mess. Id suggest manually unrolling a bale or two and make the baler make a bale during your testing procedures.
