I was a carded ref for 25years i loved the game simple I would do again the exercise you get ppl pay for and i was paid lol. You get to talk to the players, as i allowed any played to talk to me not just the captain or ass captain. I called what i saw simple. I never took sides and wanted to see a fair game with the better team winning themselves. Not the ref players will respect you if you call it fair for both sides. I used to talk to the players during the game like keep your stick down. If i saw a infraction i would say before aaawww to let them know i see you, do not do that. I played all levels growing up, and still wanted back in. This allowed me to be part of the game again Had some bad games and alot of really great games. I loved 2 clean teams were you call off sides and icings and drop the puck on a goal. Let them decide you are along for the journey. Want to know more about the game and rules??go get a rule book in the fall the clinics are held or contact Hockey Canada then read it cheers my 2 cents worth here
