To be sincere I prefer shooting on my shoulder rig but for low shots I use the cage. And for mobility, a cheap steadycam. Never used a gimbal. And i shot on a tripod when it’s absolutely necessary. You have beautiful content! Keep it that way!

I found that having my battery (an np-f) sticking out the back of the camera about 15cm on rails a great option for stability. It means I can hold the camera grip and lens, and press it against my chest for a much more stable base than my arms at the expense of making the camera footprint a fair bit bigger. Definitely find it much more stable than using the top handle, for me anyway :)

Insightful content as usual. I have noticed that, as neat and as fun as it is to use gimbals, external monitors and focus wheels, I never actually end up using them or get bothered by the extra time I need to set up. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with this discovery, so thanks for reassuring that less hardware doesn't have to mean less beautiful shots. :) In tip #7 you mention that you stabilize in post; coming from phone cameras and doing my first few shots with my brand new BMPCC4K at the time, I was almost devastated looking through the footage afterwards and noticing - even though I was even using a gimbal - how "shaky" things looked. Stabilizing in post almost felt like "rescuing" the material I thought I screwed up, so having you mention that you're stabilizing in post to get the final touches done just took a huge load of my chest. I'm not sure what would be the right format to present it, but I'd love to see how some of the establishing shots you showed here look before applying the post-stabilization.
@OfTwoLands
@OfTwoLands 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for watching !! Yeah I think gear is fun but only when it helps and doesn't get in the way. Haha yeah I stabilise a bit, but like I said only for certain shots. I don't really any video that show before and after apart from the Crane 2S video. It is mainly micro shakes when it comes to establishing shots.

@@OfTwoLands I love it so far. Light, compact, the 7” screen is a game-changer. I think for longer lenses, I’m definitely going to need some rails and matte box w/ NDs to make it as heavy as possible, but for getting out there and shooting I’m so happy to finally come home with images that I don’t have to fight. That’s a camera thing, not necessarily a rig thing, but thank you for sharing with us the rigs and your footage. Helped me finally make up my mind. The A7S III was my choice, but you proved to me how incredible the BMPCC is - a camera that is allowing me to learn problem solving. Cheers, Flo!

hell YES this is the guide i need. it still dosent really help when im trying to film while riding a bike though... although one thing i find useful is if youre using a DSLR or mirrorless with a camera strap, shorten it if possible, and put it around your neck and pull it taught to get better footage. helps a lot especially if youre in a situation with a stock camera, meaning not a lot of size or weight. like a kit DSLR or mirrorless

I used to sit down and pan a camera on my knee, then stabilize it lol. Slowmo really makes it hard to have bad looking handheld footage. I recently got my R5 RAW footage to match the RED's really good, so I have been filming more with the R5 now. That IBIS is so nice, especially with a lens that has IS, I was able to walk down a rocky trail and it looked fine lol.

Useful advice! I honestly prefer using some kind of tripod or monopod but as you pointed out it isn’t always possible. I’ve recently been practicing handholding using a top handle while focusing manually. I kind of suck at it, so I probably fork out the $ for the follow focus. from Tilta. That’s how I found your channel, by looking for focus follow (follow focus) reviews. Glad I happened upon it.

Great tips as always Flo! I just want to reiterate a few you mentioned for the filmmakers just starting out. 1. Weight.. SO important for steadier handheld work (as Flo said, Handheld doesn't just mean your hands. Handheld in Hollywood, for what its worth, usually involves a shoulder rig) More weight = Steadier shots. Just make it comfortable for you. 2. Points of Contact. People don't talk about this as much, but it's so important for steady shots. Left hand on left part of camera, right hand on right side, maybe a EVF, or elbows in and rest the camera on your belly... all help with making stable shots.. and go with the flow. 3. Movement. I keep saying "steady" but too steady as in, pure gimbal work, unless its motivated in the story, just seems fake. When you walk, you are seeing like a gimbal. Movement is natural, and it should assist the story you are making. Love the fact you mentioned it should be organic, and what you are filming it totally fits. Anyway, love the tips, reiterates what I try to do on every film shoot ;)

@@OfTwoLands so far I have loved it. It's very flexible for different rigs. Unfortunately getting it in 2020 I haven't been able to do much with it and now I sold my Metabones for the Turbo mount and it's taking a while to get here. But I am very excited to get shooting with it.

Love shooting handheld, and it's basically a necessity with my clients who are mainly musicians. However the 6k has always given me a hard time getting that fine line between shaky and naturally handheld.

I totally understand what you mean, sometimes the 6K is not heavy enough or too heavy. It's more about finding the right rig and movements.

Ive always been really strict about shooting stable shots and just recently starting to shoot handheld. Its a process to leave the shake to the footage but it looks good.

you, and other videos shot with your hands on a movie set, inspired me, you have great material. For some reason, such a hand-made picture is better perceived, closer to us by nature. And, after 9-10 years of shooting on a gimbal, I want to start shooting with my hands, because I have tried shooting like this many times, and I understand what freedom of movement it is, as well as the convenience of choosing a composition. tell me, is this object 16-35 enough for you to constantly shoot with your hands? do I often have to connect a teleconference?

Thanks for this great video! I love shooting handheld but am still looking for the best setup. I‘d love to have something like the focal length equivalent of the Canon EF 24-70 IS / 2.8 for the BMPCC 6K with image stabilization. Last Sunday I‘ve borrowed my daughter‘s EF-S 18-135 kit lens and actually like the footage even if it could be sharper and was a pain to focus manually.

Thanks for watching !! It is quite hard to find a 24-70 IS equivalent for the bmpcc6k. When I need IS I use a combination of the 16-35 IS and 24-105 IS most of the time and it works pretty well.

I am spending alot of time in backcountry trying to break into the outdoor filming community where I live. I have found for me I like have a small tough tripod so I can film from about 3 feet off the ground but also I can use it braced against me while standing. Has worked for me so far...Im also carrying alot of other gear so its nice to be able to set the camera down. Just my two cents. Im a firefighter by day so the weight is a privilege haha.

i have 2 dj ronin tripod grip/handles on mine. one on the side of the cage and one on the v mount that works as a tripod. you can also do 2 on top or 2 on each side of the cage. it might get front heavy with the 2nd configuration though.

Great insight into handheld filming. Interesting to see the follow-focus using the Tilta kit rod and not a full rail setup which looks super agile. Surprised that you use NPF and LP batteries considering the V-Mount. And I saw you have 70-200 in your cine kit. How does that work for handheld given the extent of the zoom? can we assume you film in 120fps or is that primarily tripod-based?

Big point that might have been missed by some here - it's a lens with IS. So if you, for example, have the Signal 16-35, you won't get the same look.

I do both. I have been thinking that if there's only handheld shots in video, the result may be restless. I have in fact done lately several very still news videos in which the camera does not move at all, but that needs kinda "strong and interesting images" with content.

Thanks for the video. Maybe I was unconcentrated and missed it? But I have the feeling that you didn't talk about the importance of having a lens with stabilizer? Because that is probably a very important thing when it comes to filming handheld? Whatś your opinion about shooting handheld with lenses that has no stabilizer?
@OfTwoLands
@OfTwoLands 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks !! Haha, yep I should have indeed. Even more since I talk about it all the time. I always use IS lenses when I can, especially for doco and travel content. I think I focused on the technique and the benefits of handheld. Thanks for watching :).

Yeah I prefer to shoot handheld I don’t even think I’ve used a tripod all this time since I got my pocket 4K a couple months ago. I love the freedom and rawness that handled footage gives. There is a time and a place for gimbal but most of the stuff I shoot doesn’t need it.
