Their 1969 self titled is an ABSOLUTE classic!! "You've Made Me So Very Happy", " Smiling Phases", Spinning Wheel " and a an incredible version of Laura Nyro's "And When I Die" are the highlights. It won the 1970 Grammy for album of the year.

Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in New York City in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. You've done quite a few of their songs. Some other songs are "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Lucretia MacEvil", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me", "High On A Mountain", "Morning Glory" etc.

In 1968 Al Kooper led Blood Sweat And Tears (before David Clayton Thomas joined) and their first album ‘Child Is The Father To Man’ and the song ‘I Can’t Quit Her’ was the single release. Please react to this song - the original BS&T prefigured the later group but more psychedelic/bluesy. An excellent album. Please listen and react.

Oh, it left off the final guy saying "That wasn't too good" and then people laughing. When I was growing up and listening to the classic rock station, this was the only song by Blood, Sweat and Tears that they played on the radio. I remember a DJ saying "It sounded good to me" after that final line.

"Spinning Wheel" was released way before Kool and the Gang's "Ladies Night." Although both horn parts share some elements, they are not really the same. I think this recording is also very "Chicago-like" -- could have easily been one of their songs.

There was a fad in the 60's and 70's where trumpet players were forever in search of a higher note. Speaking for myself, it had all the musical artistry of Captain Quint's fingernails on the chalkboard in "Jaws". There were few songs that were worth enduring the pain induced by the screech owl with a trumpet. This was one of those songs. Now I do love the magic that a trumpeter brings to a song. I believe that a virtuoso performance of a staccato is a better test of skill. As a veteran much of my life was controlled by the bugle. Reveille, Retreat/To The Colors, Tattoo, and Taps are as sacred to me as our National Anthem.

@@jamestaylor2920 I hear you but I always wished I had the lips for something like that. I don't look at it as screeching but we all like what is good to the ears. I am a Al Hirt fan. He has the fastest fingers I have ever seen. He has the best tone and best highs imo and anyone who can play the Green Hornet theme like he did has my respect. Plus Christmas isn't Christmas until I hear him play Nutty Jingle Bells!

Think about the carnival carrousel. You get on a "painted pony" that goes up and down as you are spinning around. Then think about how it is vaguely that ride can resemble one's life. It's like staying in one's comfort zone, pretending to go somewhere and each time you pass the same place, there are some changes, different people, other things moving in the carnival, but you really don't go anywhere other than the confines of that carrousel you are in. Think about being stuck on that carrousel...until you decide to jump off and explore more of what life has to offer.

Loved this band since I was a kid. Their hey day was when David Clayton-Thomas was the lead vocalist and Bobby Colomby (who later went on to be a producer and record exec. for Columbia Records and was responsible for guiding the Jacksons on their DESTINY album), the drummer was with the band. David left the group briefly after 1971 and rejoined them in 1975 and left for good after touring with them in the '90's. Nuclear Blues was the last record David made with them. (You should definitely check that one out). I like the More than Ever album from 1976 that really cooks!

Saw them back in the 80's . fantastic show. best sound ever for an outdoor venue. one the river at Chattanooga's Riverbend Festival. Coca Cola had a barge turned into a stage for the main events. Huge week long music and hydroplane boat racing festival. They had 3 main stages and several huge tents set up with smaller acts playing in them. 100k + attendance back then. Anyhoo great show, great sound. I remember the bass kick drum felt like it was hitting me in the chest. And the brass was killer. And David sounded just as great as ever. Gotta do "Carry On" next.

Hi Harri, love your channel; is there a video that speaks about your musical background and history? I think the song may be referring to a vertically-aligned wheel and it is metaphorically talking about the ups and downs of life. The spokes of a vertical wheel; some will be "up" and some will be "down" with each rotation. Your interpretation using a horizontal wheel is a good analogy as well. Good on you.

I always thought of the song as depicting the tension between the the everyday, real, rotating through the same things and events, rat-race existence versus the 'dropped out', counter-culture, psychedelic, hippy, or jazz/funk performer-on-the-road crowd. Did the person being sung to find their pot of gold after they turned off the main highway? Did they find someone to love who was on the same journey? Could they come back to the mundane world? I love all the dissonant and dizzy intersections of musical styles.

Hari this is Blood Sweat and tears 2.0. even though they did great jazz-rock music , They won the best album of the year over Abbey Road by The Beatles in 1969. I much prefer the original BST which lead singer and songwriter and musician Al Kooper started as a jazz-rock group in New York in 1967. Katz left in 1968 to form his own group with Mike Bloomfield and was replaced by Barrel-chested power house Canadian Singer David Clayton Thomas who used to work in a music store at Yonge and Dundas in Toronto in the early 60's I bought my first guitar from him there. If you want to hear an awesome Blood Sweat and Tears first iteration I know you will love "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" written by Al Kooper one of the most truly romantic songs ever from BST first album Child Is The Father To The Man. Al Kooper is the Hammon organ player on Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone-the best song of all time when he was only 21.
