I mentioned before that I live in Memphis. One day my wife and I were driving in southwest Memphis looking for a farm house selling fresh produce. We ending up driving down a road in a field. Near the end we saw an abandoned bus. When we got closer we saw it was Albert King’s old tour bus! It was nice surprise.

Albert King was also SRV's mentor. There is a great Canadian Television documentary of him and SRV talking about how they met and all the history they have together. Most of all they took turns playing each other tunes. SRV had total respect, called him sir, and treated him like the Blues Master he was. You two are always awesome! Doing my best to pass on your Joy.

Another blues guitartist to check out is Albert Collins. He was from Texas and he was an influence to folks like Robert Cray and The Vaughn brothers. Check out his songs Frosty, Honey Hush, If Trouble Was Money. He was influenced by John lee hooker. Check out his songs like boogie chillen’, crawling king snake, boom boom, one bourbon, one scotch, one beer, I’m in the mood (solo or with bonnie raitt), dimples, mr. lucky (w/robert cray).

He was one of the "King of the Blues", a trio that comprised of BB King, Freddie King and Albert (who's given name is Nelson,). You can hear the similarities in his and BB's vocals. I hear Stevie Ray Vaughan in the guitar 🎸🎶🎶

Trio? Did they ever play together?
@davidruvalcaba6740
@davidruvalcaba6740 6 ай бұрын
@@cazgerald9471 , they were referred to as the "Kings" because of their influence on future musicians (Clapton, Vaughan, Hendrix to name a few). There was also a fourth King (Earl) but his influence was not as impactful. None of them were related, they never all played together - those BB and Albert did "gig" together at times. Interesting side note is that BB's (for Baby Blues) father's name was Albert.

I'd love if someone would react to Freddie King. Out of the three Kings, I think he has been the least recognized. Try "Have You Ever Loved A Woman", or "Going Down" but my favorite of his is "Palace Of The King". Just mut $0.02.
@tobias_dahlberg

@@RogerWyatt365 Freddie is overlooked today. He was every bit as cool as the two others. B.B. was gentle, sweet, melodic. Albert was powerful and very rythmic-based. Freddie was a combination of both and had one hell of a powerful voice (they all had to be honest).

Got to see, The Moody Blues, Yes, The Beach Boys, Joe Cocker, (He was damn good live) The Lovin' Spoonful, Grand Funk Railroad, Jethro Tull, saw the Stones twice, and Linda Ronstat and James Taylor and others I'm probably forgetting. These are songs from his album Ice Pickin’: "Master Charge”; "Conversation with Collins", "Honey, Hush!, "Too Tired" or "When the Welfare Turns Its Back on You"!!! They talked during the performance, and at the end, it was like Alberta was passing the torch on to Stevie. Everyone was expecting Stevie to go there and out play Albert with his guitar playing, but it was the complete opposite, Stevie stayed in the background showing the respect Albert deserved. Clint Eastwood made a movie called Honky Tonk Man based on the life of Rodgers. One of the Three Kings of Blues - Albert, BB, and Freddie - Albert was a very big man. It is rumored he used banjo strings in the middle two strings of his guitar so he could bemd them easier. He was known for the way he would bend the strongs, but he certainly didn't need banjo strings to bend them more easily since he had huge hands! He was left handed and played a Gibson Flying V so he could go all the way to the base of the neck to utilize all of the neck more easily. He's one of my favorite blues artists. You should check out John Lee Hooker and the song "Boom Boom".

There is a specific Albert King string bending and partial releasing technique that became a big part of Stevie Ray Vaughan's style - so much so, that when I first heard SRV soloing on a David Bowie song on the radio, I thought it was Albert. His big hit was "Born Under A Bad Sign". He was left handed, so he played a right handed guitar upside down, using a custom tuning, so he would use a lot of extreme bends.

I've heard interviews where Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan cite "the three kings" (Albert King, Freddie King and B.B. King) as among their major influences. I think the way SRV bent the strings sure sounds like he absorbed some of Albert's style. On Cream's first or second album, they covered Albert King's classic "Born Under a Bad Sign". Never did see any of the three kings, but did see other favorite blues guitarists like Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland and Billy Gibbons in the late 70s and early 80s. So cool that even young folks can still appreciate the old masters :)

Interesting to note that Albert was a lefty who played his guitar strung right-handed, with the treble strings at the top and bass strings on the bottom. Only a handful of players I can think of who did that - Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Gales. They all had to learn that way because right-handed guitars that belonged to others were all they had access to. It's easy to get a lefty guitar now, but that wasn't always the case.

Albert was a true blues classic with biting guitar and growling vocals who influenced all the 60s/70s guitar greats. He does an awesome duet with SRV in Born Under a Bad Sign, please check it out sometime, dope performance by 2 legends, RIP. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

There‘s a BB King and Friends on KZfaq: BB, Albert, Etta James, Dr. John, Clapton, SRV, Paul Butterfield, Phil Collins, Gladdys Knight, Chaka Khan, Billy Ocean. What a 2 hour show!

As others have said, one of the primary influences and mentors of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Next time you listen to SRV, remember Albert King's guitar tone. You'll be able to hear with more appreciation what SRV absorbed from developing his sound chewing on King's licks as one of his major influences.

I believe Albert King always played a Flying V, didn't he? Just purely tone-wise, his sound is quite distinctive.

@@dggydddy59, true. However, listen to both one right after the other. It's not just tone, but technique. You can literally hear King in SRV sound.

I think SRV got a lot of his licks from Albert King.

SRV cited Albert King as one of his main influences. Check out some of the stuff they did together.

You need to hear Albert King's Live recordings where he really stretches out on guitar. Listen to a "Blues Power" or "Blues at Sunrise" then listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn play Texas Flood. You'll hear immediately that Albert is SRVs biggest influence by far.

Another King is Freddie King, he, Albert and BB were known as the three Kings of the Blues. You should react to "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" It's one of his most popular songs.

I'm so glad you mentioned his voice! It can be hard to realize how good it is when you're focusing on his incredible guitar playing. For me, this is definitely a "vibe" song, one that you chill out with with lights dimmed, and maybe a glass of Crown Royal with your gal.

Wonderful reaction. There is a lot of Albert King in the way SRV played. Another Blues Great you should check out is Jphnny Winter. Johnny is one of the All time great Blues / Rock guitarists and has tons of excellent music. Johnny produced and played on 3 Grammy Award winning albums for Muddy Waters. I recommend Rock Me Baby, Rock And Roll from Still Alive And Well, Don't take Advantage Of Me from Guitar Slinger, Sound The Bell from Serious Business, Be Careful With A Fool from his self titled album, Last Night from White Hot And Blue. Also 3 great videos from the Midnight Special are worth checking out.
