Steve Gadd on the drum kit. One of the best drummers in existence. He's the guy who killed it at the end of "Aja" by Steely Dan.

If you're doing Paul Simon's solo career (either solo or duet are deep rabbit holes), you might like "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes" which he did after a trip to Africa. It includes African singers/dancers. And check out "You Can Call Me Al" from the same time period.

The Bassist who played on MANY P Simon tracks is African. His name is Bakithi Kumalo > and he is a bad ass. Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes is just one of them. 💪🏼

The lyrics that Simon dropped throughout the 70s were on another level. Start to finish...records like "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" had incredible imagery on each and every track. Simon is one of the greats.

A remarkable songwriter. Some of my favorites are not "greatest hits". You will not regret checking out 'one trick pony' ''stranded in a limousine' 'late in the evening', storytelling at it's best. Good to see you back. I enjoy your prespective

Smooth! "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" was Paul Simon's biggest hit in the 1970's. I remember hearing it a lot on the radio when I was a kid. Simon's catalog is full of classics from the seventies and eighties -- "Mother and Child Reunion", "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard", "Loves Me Like a Rock", "Slip Slidin Away", "Kodachrome", "Late in the Evening", "Graceland", "You Can Call Me Al", "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", and "The Obvious Child" along with many others.

This song takes me back to when I was a kid in the 70's. It was constantly being played on the radio and rightly so. Simon had many great songs as a solo artist as well as with Garfunkel.

Simon and Garfunkel break up is complicated. Toward end of 60s, Garfunkel was getting major acting roles in major motion pictures. Work on those pictures took him away from work on (what would be) their last album, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Paul Simon, who wrote all their songs, even wrote a song Only Living Boy in New York, which appeared on that album. Paul Simon parted ways with Art Garfunkel after release of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Here is what Wikipedia says about the song, Only Living Boy in New York: Simon wrote this as a thinly veiled message to Art Garfunkel, referencing in the first stanza a specific incident where Garfunkel went to Mexico to act in the film Catch-22. Simon was left alone in New York writing songs for Bridge over Troubled Water, hence the very lonely feelings of "The Only Living Boy in New York." Simon refers to Garfunkel in the song as "Tom", alluding to their early days when they were called Tom and Jerry, and encourages him to "let your honesty shine . . . like it shines on me"

Some of this stuff. . . it's your parents music when you're growing up, so you sleep on it. You deep-diving on these songs makes me really pay attention for the first time. I've heard a lot of these songs thousands of times. Watching you find steak in the musical stew of my youth has me feasting on this stuff with you. Thanks for what you do, man.

*the musical stew of my youth has me feasting* What beautiful wordsmithery! It reminds me of an old adage I used to stubbornly turn on its head; a picture is worth (or paints) a thousand words. I insisted that a word can paint a thousand pictures (or a thousand words inspire a bottomless well and an endless night sky of paintings?). I've since realized it sprung from the chip on my shoulder I had growing up because my best friend was wildly talented when it came to art; mostly classic painting (in the basic bitch fashion of Baroque and Rococo - psshh, even Surrealism), while I would've suffered a beat down by a 6yr old wielding a chewed up pencil. To this day, I'm still on the level of crude stick figures with giant noses and bosoms. I hope like hell she's still painting.

The most DIFFICULT drum beat to get CORRECT!!!! 💯 I'm a drummer, and we JUDGE eachother's skills by "Yeah... but can you play '50 Ways'?!?!" Steve Gaad, the MASTER of the groove, on the drums... he invented the fucking beat, and we've all been trying to figure out how he did it for the last 50 years!!! 💯😎

I think we've all been cheated on at some point and it ain't fun, BUT, this is an ass kickin song! I've been singing along with the shlyrics for decades and don't tell anybody but sometimes, I still get the words Ef'd up! Haha!

What I’ve liked about this song is it is about getting leaving a lover when you are not happy and start cheating. It isn’t about leaving a spouse and commitment but walking to find someone you truly want to commit to and not cheat on.

It certainly not what you think when you just listen to the song casually. Simon is a great lyricist so I'm going to assume he wasn't just writing blindly as if it's a charming scenario. Not sure if his storytelling is about two terrible people or about a young man being manipulated and he never really lets on in the song that he thinks there's anything wrong here but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was aware of it, unless he was leaving someone at the time and trying to pretend to himself that it was all right.

All my life the lyrics played out totally different in my head: Itnever accoured to me this was manipulation directed at cutting out a third party. Instead, I feel her trying to convay the message from "Hit the road Jack" in a more genyle, civilized manner. The chorus would be her, remembering what she would tell her frequently changing playthings, if she was cruel, so it plays out in fantasy only. The hevy melancholy of the verse is him geting torn apart by the realisation of her nature and the fact, he is not mattering to her by far as she is mattering to him.

1000 ways off the top of your head? Without hurting... what are some of them? Let me think. Just say we are thru, Boo. Flirt with her friend, Ken. Snitch to your Mom, Tom. That will do it 4 me. Let go the job, Bob. Start being a slob, Rob. Leave the key in the knob, Cobb. And go on and be free.
