Many good comments about moisture in the system. I also agree with checking how close the brake lines are to hot exhaust parts. One I didn’t see is pulling the parachutes before applying the brakes. I don’t know how much air space is in your brake fluid reservoir, but if the fluid is a little low and you pull the chutes, you might uncover the intake port on the master cylinder and push air into the system.
@jergunsjunkАй бұрын
Either that or the extreme wheel speed is pushing pads out during the run, doesn't explain why they didnt come back after he pumped them.
@khristianmichel6027Ай бұрын
Thought the same. Moisture in the lines that cooks off into a gas?
@coreybair9426Ай бұрын
I agree
@jdrisselАй бұрын
One way the old DOT3 fluid was better was that a little water didn't boil an push all the fluid out. But it was nasty stuff that ate paint, held on to water and corroded everything it touched. I have always wondered why we never came up with something that could just slightly raise the boiling point when contaminated that was not as awful as DOT3.
@Harry_GersackАй бұрын
Good thought with the moisture and all that. BUT if this was the problem, he should have made FULL pressure when he initially hit the brakes. Then they would begin to fade. They will not act like they did in his case because he already had no pressure when he stepped on it. So the problem was already there before the end of the pass. You might be right with uncovering the port of the master cylinder. Although I don't think it was because of the parachutes. It probably was the other way round. Fluid gets pushed back through the acceleration. Depending on the design of the reservoir and if the port is in the middle of the reservoir or at the front. If the port is located in the middle, it can get uncovered by pulling the chutes , but the fluid level would need to be extremely low. I think it's more likely to uncover it under acceleration when you have the port at the front of the reservoir. But I assume the FIRST THING he did after he went rallying was to CHECK THE RESERVOIR. So he's probably right about the residual brake pressure causing him to drag the brakes all the way down the track. That caused his fluid to boil before he even stepped on the pedal. I'm almost sure the tbm rotors are just machined flat. OEM's manufacture their rotors with a little runout to push the pads away from the rotor when you'r not using the brake. Without this runout the piston gasket would be the only thing that pulls piston and pad away from the rotor. If the whole assembly is not absolutely 100% new and clean then the gasket will not have enough force to pull everything away from the rotor. Maybe there was moisture involved, but first of all there shouldn't be 17psi of brake pressure when he's going down the track. Especially with flat machined rotors that are not ventilated!

I had a seemingly similar intermittent brake failure problem on a car with no abs. However, it was at a low rate of speed in a rural area. Got the car stopped using my parking/emergency brake. Checked the fluid level in the master, looked for leaks, and couldn't find anything wrong. Cautiously drove the car home, and the brakes worked perfectly. Ended up changing the master cylinder because I didn't know what else it could be. This happened years ago, I,m still driving that vehicle and I've never had it happen again. It's definitely a very eerie feeling when you're trying to stop a vehicle, and the brakes don't work. I'm glad Steve made it out of that situation without much damage.

@recoilrob324Ай бұрын
The DOT 5 that Steve's running won't absorb moisture like DOT 3-4 will .....so something else is going on. The front rotors are really small with very little mass and are going to get hot quick. I wish there were cameras on the car going into the gravel....if the brakes were just overheated they'd be orange, or the pads just didn't bite. I tried to see the rotors when they were digging it out of the gravel and from the brief view they looked blackish so they might be ruined. Glad he's going to get larger chutes!!

@@recoilrob324- Drag cars like Steve’s use minimal front braking to stop the car vs the rear brakes. It’s due to the tires used on drag cars. You don’t want to lock up the narrow front tires. The majority of braking is via the rear brakes with the large sticky rear tires.

It’s your brake hoses. They’re collapsed on the inside, not allowing fluid to come back fast enough when master is trying to retract. Then 200+mph, heats them up and boils fluid. As soon as fluid starts getting yellow/brownish, it’s got water in it, it’ll boil. Glad there wasn’t much damage except for parking feelings. Thanks for the content.

Nah its his master cylinder. 1 failed hose isn't going to take down all 4 corners and cause the brake pedal to go to the floor.

I’ll do you one better, standard car, you tell me why hoses are ribbed and I’ll believe you.

@@jamesb9300 That's the problem though isn't it, the willingness to accept God's Word and by extension Him or do you continue to lean on your own understanding and the imaginations of men, (Genesis 8:21, Psalm 14:1, Psalm 92:6, Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 18:2, Proverbs 27:22), and many such verses in Scripture.

Kinda crazy Cleetus had a no parachute issue a few years ago when he did a pass in Tom Bailey's car and now in your own car you get the parachute but no brakes. Just glad that nothing seriously bad came out of that situation. Sounds like some water might have gotten into the system and that boiled off causing air in the lines

A stuck shoe or pad could have super heated the break at that speed. (not an expert but had something similar) Edit: This could have happend during the burnout, with the line lock on you would not have noticed.

Everyone is an "eXpErT" nowadays. Steve is the man and leaves no stone unturned. He's racing a 4000+ HP car and things WILL break. You don't have to watch his channel very long at all to get a real strong sense of his attention to detail. If there's a box to check, you can be certain Steve will double triple check that mother trucker. Keep doing your thing Steve. Consummate professional and inspiration. Cheers.

In 1968 I had a '57 Ford that had occasional vanishing brakes. Wish i could remember what we did to fix it. Amazing what you can forget in 55+ years.

Clean save Steve. Looked to be brake smoke for sure. That residual brake pressure at over 200mph would cause some serious heat/ smoke. Been there in my one ton hauling a loaded 40ft gooseneck down a mountain pass. Trailer brake controller fuse popped so only had truck brakes, and slowing from about 80mph to 40mph in maybe 20 seconds was enough my pads smoked and pedal was going further and further to the floor. Glad you're okay man
@dougfry5897Ай бұрын
brakes hung and faded?? that is absolutely strange they could work just fine on the way back to the pits. glad the car, and more importantly, YOU are okay! thanks for another video steve, love em!
@AB-80XАй бұрын
Dang! Glad it wasn't worse. Something we sometimes see when we run road courses, is that if the brakes have been very hot, the pedal goes away after the car has sat because the fluid starts to boil due to the residual heat. I had this problem with both MoTul RBF600 and RBF660. Switched to Castrol SRF brake fluid and never a problem again. Best fluid bar none. Also, sometimes getting air out of the system is just a bit tricky and takes a lot of bleeding. At any rate, if you are running one of the Motul fluids, consider switching to the Castrol. I would not expect you to have had the brakes sit for so long that moisture in the fluid would be the problem.

I love watching your video's, they are kid friendly 99.9% of the time. Here is what I would look into, Brake Temperature sensors if anyone makes them? Yes on the Caliper it self. That will give you more Data on your braking system. I always wondered on your parachute size for that heavy beast? Now you know. Please stay safe and keep the educational video's coming, I love them.
