One of the true marks of a fencing champion is the ability to stay level headed under immense pressure. No room for mistakes, tight calls going against him yet still he stays focused.

it is definitely super disconcerting when the lights on the stream go off super early but I'm very happy that you restored the audio to its true state 💯

Great video. Do you think failing to start fencing on "Allez" and holding the hand up to ask for a halt, like Oh does here at one point, should be more harshly penalized? I feel like it gives fencers a "mulligan" for a touch where they weren't ready and I don't see it get carded as often as the false or early start off the line.

I think it can cause problems but I think referees are pretty good at carding for it. Daryl Homer gets carded a lot for it. In this case I don't think Oh is unreasonable in putting his hand up as he hadn't "settled" before Allez was called. But part of the problem is when refs rush the commands by either saying prêts before the fencers are engarde or saying the allez immediately after the prêts. This normally results in the referee saying allez as soon as one fencer is ready (usually the last fencer to come on guard).

Mind games aside, both fencers are keyed up to start as fast as they can, knowing the ref is going to give priority to the fencer who was just a hair faster off the line. So if you concentration slips just a wee bit when en garde and you realize the other guy started first? Yeah, the hand goes up.

I think the ref thought they both moved early. It was hard to tell on the stream because the audio was bad and there was a big delay.

No doubt that takes a lot of mental strength. But are we really saying Oh's riposte for 14-14 wasn't into the guard first, hence counter-riposte Gemesi? 1:45

If Oh attempted a beat attack I would say Gemesi, but it looks quite clear to me Oh hit Gemesi’s guard during the parry as he’s still moving Gemesi’s blade away, and riposted after whilst Gemesi did a remiss. Basically the feint low cut as a whole is actually a parry, and the upwards slap is the actual riposte.

So the penultimate touch, Oh parries Gemesi then slams into his guard and it's still his riposte?!
@samsignorelli
@samsignorelli 2 жыл бұрын
Looks to me that the touch was made with the blade (he kinda backhanded it in), not the guard....therefore, valid hit.

he's awesome, his retreating is out of this world but I don't like that he always try to break the opponents rythm when he's behing in the scorecard: changing swords, caring for some injury, etc. No need, imo.
