Yeah, Sampson looks JUST like my old cocker spaniel (who was a rescue from a puppy mill breeding cockapoos!), complete with massive feet, docked tail and anxiety issues. This little guy doesn't have the spaniel ears, which would be a dead giveaway, but I'm with Vanessa on this one. Probably a cockapoo from an unethical breeder.

For all we know, some of the pups could have come out with cocker ears, and they had a back-alley "vet" trim them in a partial docking, so they wouldn't pass as cockers so easily. It sadly doesn't pay to underestimate how scummy some people can be.

Since Vanessa said at the start that she has groomed him for years, Sampson is proof that there are just some animals that will always be reactive and need special attention. Still best to start as a puppy/kitten training them on what to expect, if you can.

Not if the owners correctly understand grooming is a TEAM effort. You never leave it up to the groomers. I have successfully trained over 45 rescue dogs for the groomers. 3-5 days a week desensitizing did WONDERS! I mean it was like incredible to witness the improvements. We did practice grooms and they all learned to love getting pampered. All different breeds and not a single one was ever reactive after. If zero training gets done at home-the dog will continue to be reactive. And stressed! Why anyone would want their dog stressed for the groomers is beyond me lol. Behavioral training is not optional-it’s mandatory regardless of the breed,history,age,personality etc. My mom was a vet so I’ve been taking care of animals since I was old enough to walk lol. And I’m rattled to the core how many people don’t train their animals. I’m a huge advocate for behavioral training. Especially for our poor groomers. Just because they put up with certain behaviors doesn’t mean they have to. Groomer/vet burnout is REAL. And it’s heartbreaking. Ive watched my mom’s mental and physical health deteriorate when she was in her prime. When you would do anything to help an animal but their owners do the bare minimum…I wish I was exaggerating when I say throughout my 27 years in animal rescue (I’m 33) I’ve personally known over a dozen groomers who have quit their job after 5-12 years. Those who didn’t quit-no longer accept any difficult clients which brings on pretty rough guilt. Especially that another groomer may cause the dog to have more issues. As for vets..it’s a different story-there’s usually a team to help out but it’s still beyond stressful. So please…let’s advocate for better training. Our professionals deserve better!!! And so do our animals!

@@xobelladonna2443that sounds like it could be quite costly to do that 3 days a week, not everyone can afford that and most people probably wouldn't include that in the general cost of a dog to be honest. Growing up, our family dog was a purebred miniature poodle. Grooming for him was like a day at the spa. He absolutely loved it. When we took him to his groomers house, he would run to the front door and then bolt inside when it opened. When we picked him up, he would prance around to show off his new groom which was a classic show dog cut. He was certainly a handsome dude.

After watching these videos I spent a month teaching my adult dogs to shake and high 5. Several times a day before their first professional groom we'd practice touch, then touch and hold for progressively longer times. I then took my nail clippers and tapped all their nails while holding their paws. They aren't super well trained on other things, but they do quite well now with paw handling. The groomer said they were champs, so it was worth the effort.

You have to imagine having his tail docked is at least partly responsible for not wanting any humans near his butt again 😣 Docking is such an incredibly cruel practice. Dogs acquire trauma just like we do 😢 Same with feet/nails. That's the Cocker genes. Most Cocker's have touch issues when they can't see. It was a serious problem in the breed back in the 1980s. Sometime watch a dog show while Cocker's are being judged and you'll notice the handler literally pulls the ears forward while hold both the ears and muzzle and the dogs invariably 'twitch' when the judge touches their rear quarters. The seasoned judges go over Cockers in a constant motion, starting at the neck and running their hands back over the body so there isn't an interruption.

I guess it may be important to the owners and to also get a better idea of his temperament. I wish I'd known the temperament of my Shih Tzu before we had adopted him, because even though he was an absolute angel, he was stubborn and had quite a few food allergies. Knowing that may have prevented me from accidentally annoying him as a kid, and maybe alleviate some of the pain he went through.
@billcosgrave6232

@@pragyasingh2297 I had a Shih Tzu with similar characteristics, but that is just the nature of Shih Tzu's. You learn to deal with their stubbornness and any medical conditions that they, or any pet, may have. I do agree with Vanessa however with regards to unscrupulous breeders. Sometime time ago I adopted a barn cat from a local shelter. He was large but very friendly. The shelter said he was given up for adoption because the prior owner thought he was too big and too rambunctious. I adopted him anyways - although he actually adopted me! You have to realize that dogs and cats are thinking, feeling creatures just like people along with all the idiosyncrasies that entails. If you are looking for the "perfect" pet you won't find it and in that case you are probably not cut out to be a pet owner. Remember, when you get a pet you do so because it will be a companion to you and that means you are obligated to take care of it. Make sure the dog or cat chooses you and then be prepared to treat it like a living being and not a show piece or play toy. BTW, "Nelson" is my best buddy!

interesting that he's sensitive on his paws and rump but not his face, I've heard that if dogs had their tails docked later into puppyhood or a bad experience during docking (idk what counts as a bad experience or not) they could have higher chance of being anxious with grooming around that location. Docking is slowly becoming banned across Canadian provinces as well as various countries around the world so hopefully we'll have a future of slightly less anxious puppies coming in for grooming someday
@Solitude11-11

Docking is always a bad experience, it is done without anaesthesia and is removing part of the spine. Depending on how it is done, it can leave the tail very sensitive for life, which can cause issues with handling that area. I’m in the UK and it’s banned here but I had quite a few dogs in rescue prior to the ban that had painful tail stumps.

This is why people who feel like they must buy rather than adopt should do their due diligence and make sure they find a good, HONEST breeder. Breeders who lie about the breed they're selling you likely also haven't been careful about the well-being of the their animals. So not only are you not getting the breed you want, the dog probably also comes with a host of health and behavioral issues.

@@dovesraven Occassionally some ethical breeders may temporarily breed hybrids ("mutts"), but it's so as to introduce new/healthier genetics in an attempt to improve the health of the breed, such as how the elevated uric acid trait has been bred out of dalmatians through crossing with a pointer (LUA Backcross Project). It's a thoughtfully and intentionally done process for the overall health and preservation of the breed and it's generally only a one-time cross, not constant litter after litter in an attempt to sell "designer" puppies for a quick buck like is often the case for poodle-mixes.

I personally like that you try to figure out his breed just because it helps to greater understand the pup you're dealing with. Like the way some people have strengths and little tics, sometimes dog breeds do too. Like I can tell Sammy's a very sweet boy but when he doesn't like something, he's really gonna make it very clearly known without a warning. Information like that might help me ask necessary questions to new owners with a similar breed.

Wow! Samson and I have pretty much the same triggers when it comes to being groomed. Mind you after that one time at the nail salon, they just kicked me out. Never offered me the muzzle option, and my wife never suggested it again as a couples event. So bit of a win for me! 😂

I'm curious, when owners bring dogs with breeds that don't quite match what you think they are, do you tell them? Does it change if they are first time customers vs long time/friends/family? Personally I think I would appreciate if someone more knowledgeable informed me, as I imagine it would be relevant to their health/care, but I'm sure some people wouldn't be happy! Must be a fine line to walk

We adopted what was listed as a German Shepherd/Husky mix. I observed her closely after her adoption, and was a bit confused, because she didn't exhibit traits of either breed. When we took her for her after adoption checkup, the vet tech told us that she was a Belgian Malinois (she has two). Suddenly, her behaviours made sense.

I'll just never understand why people want poodle mixes. That fur looks like an absolute nightmare to take care of. I much prefer my japanese spitz that doesn't even need to be washed unless he gets into something bad.

I love dogs that don't need trims. My papillon is like your Japanese Spitz. She has beautiful hair but doesn't need trimming and she is easy to bathe if she ever gets into anything. She's 10 lbs so I can just put her in the sink and use the sprayer to rinse her. I would never get a dog that needs pro-grooming! What are people thinking? And my mom was a groomer, but I still would have never gotten a dog that needed $100 professional grooms! Before my papillon I had a black lab. She was big, but again, she never needed baths and always smelled wonderful. She did not need pro grooming of any kind. I did have to get the vet to trim her nails until I taught her to be desensitised to it and then she let me do it.

My cockapoo absolutely detests having his paws and legs touched despite my desensitisation attempts when he was a puppy- just didn’t make a difference. Good to see this is a cockapoo trait and not just my failed attempts at training.

Used to have a Cockapoo, looked just like Samson only bigger (knee height). Alex was great to groom except for his nails. I assumed he’d been quicker a few times so on groomer used a dremel on him and he was great! He passed away 3 years ago, was the best and smartest dog I’d ever owned

I love watching your channel. I recently watched a video about dogs with a thick under coat. I looked for a grooming dryer as you suggested and it was the answer to removing the thick under coat that I could not wash or brush out. She is now a beautiful black like she use to be. I washed and dried my Schipperkee in the tub shower with the curtain closed, it did make a big mess but I just left the hair covered tub to dry and vacuumed the hair up. Thanks for the tip.
