The first time I heard "Hypnotize," I knew that echoed guitar lick from somewhere, but it took me a long time to figure it out (I was 13 when "Rise" was released). I can't help thinking it's no accident that "Rise" and "Hypnotize" rhyme. I just love your flashy ways.

Daytime Soap Opera "GENERAL HOSPITAL" made this popular. The character Luke Spencer a Disco owner assaulted Laura Baldwin while this song played in the background. The two characters would later marry in the one of the biggest weddings on television in the 1980's. It would only be surpassed by the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana! Other Alpert instrumental to be heard that followed were "Route 101" and "Garden Party". Saxophone player David Sanborn songs like "Bang Bang" and "The Dream" should be heard also. His saxophone sound is heard through out Rock like David Bowie's "Young Americans" and James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" and The Eagles "Sad Cafe". Also featured with Eric Clapton in the first 2 "LETHAL WEAPON" films.

I am 53 years old and remember when this song first played on radio. My parents would sway gently , dancing together in the kitchen. As i write this comment tears are running down my face. I don't have many good childhood memories in my life but watching / remembering my parents slowly dancing to this song in the kitchen is one of them. Thanks so much for reminding me of this song!

Alpert is the only musician to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979). Mom would always tell us to put the stack of 8 LP's on the player and let them play while she cleaned house on Saturday. I would be playing in the basement to be out of her way, and the sound would come right through the floor. Loved everything he made.

@@jimpierce3138 Hey, Jim. I was just about to bring up Gino Vanelli in these comments, but I wisely decided to see if anyone else had done so already. Vanelli is one of the most brilliant musicians/singers I can think of. I remember when I first heard "People Gotta Move." I was a teenager from Arizona, living in Montreal (Vanelli's hometown). I heard it on a Montreal radio station, CKGM (Montreal's top-40 station) - and I had never heard anything like it on the radio before. The song was soooo innovative and intriguing, and his voice was distinct and pitch perfect. Incroyable!

I don't know how many people appreciate the talent it takes to play a horn as well as Herb Alpert could. I played a bugle and a trombone (just capable of hitting the notes). What I always appreciated about Alpert was his unerring SMOOTHNESS. Even when he's tickling the valves at speed, the transitions are so smooth... Most instrumentalists seem to make hard transitions so as to accentuate their speed, but Alpert plays it down. I don't know if it was due to genius or simply an appreciation of what subtlety can bring to music, but I love it. I have been a fan of his music ever since I first heard him when I was a child, sixty-some years ago. Amazing musician.

A funny story I heard about this song is that Herb had been a record executive (he being the A at A&M Records) for like a decade and hadn't hardly played the trumpet. He had to go back and take some lessons before he could record this song. Even the greats need a little help now and then. His cover of This Guys in Love with you was a huge hit in the late 60"s were Herb sang. Quite a shock to people who grew up listening to his instrumentals.

As one of the founders of A&M records they produced many artists. Herb Albert received a demo that changed the lives of 2 young musicians when he signed them on his label. Those 2 are Richard and Karen Carpenter. He had a good ear for talent besides being a talented musician in his own right. I grew up in the 60's listening to the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass's album. Whipped Cream and Other Delights. The Album had a pretty provocative cover picture for it's time. LOL

Herb Alpert's music belongs to a tradition older than our jazz. He came from the mariachi bands of mexico, and his trumpet style goes back to the bullrings of Spain. To understand him better, you should listen to his first big hit, The Lonely Bull. To understand how he was able to blend his mexican style with our north American music, I can't name a better example than this one.

I love that you had no idea of the break coming in. 15-20 years ago I compiled like 150 volumes of funk breaks just for my own interest. This is still a fav! If a human being could sing through a trumpet 🎺, that human being would be Herb Alpert. Herb Alpert is an extremely talented musician. In fact, he's listed among one of the richest musicians in the world, if not *THE* richest. Herb Alpert is the only musician to hold the distinction of having two #1 hits where one was instrumental & the other one was vocal. The instrumental song that was # 1 was "Rise" and the vocal song that was # 1 was "This Guy's Gonna Love You ". He was also the "A" behind "A&M Records" too. He was one of the founders of that legendary record label. More folks need to be introduced to his music catalog.

This song came at the end of the Brass' years of hits and top-selling albums, extraordinary in the age of Rock. Surprisingly, when he tried vocalizing, he had a #1 hit with "This Guy's in Love With You", written by Burt Bacharach. Herb Alpert esablished the very successful A&M Records, discovered the Carpenters, among others, and married a beautiful singer, Lani Hall, from Brazil '66. "A Taste of Honey", Tijuana Taxi, and "What Now My Love" are some other classic hits from the Tijuana Brass. The cover of the album "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" is iconic and well-remembered.

@@BigCheifJJ Yeah, originally I had the word "haunting" in my comment because of the "rape" scene on the dancefloor. That scene was so confusing! I used to listen to my dad's Rise LP over and over. One day in the 80s when I was a teenager I went to an air show. After the flight portion was over, my friend and I were wandering around looking at all of the cool planes. We even got to meet Pappy Boyington! As we wondered, the background music they started playing was Rise. Just as I turned to my friend to tell him I had just listen to that song that morning, I swear I saw Herb Alpert himself walk past me! That was an awesome day.
