Ohio Corn Silage Harvest with a Fox 6644 Max 2 Forage Harvester & John Deere 4850 Tractor
In this video I am out at a family farm north of Dalton Ohio as they chop Corn Silage for their Dairy Herd.
First up in the video they are using their 1977 Fox 6644 Max 2 self propelled forage harvester with a 3 row head to open up the fields. They did chop a little extra for this video so I was able to get some better shots of the machine in action. After the field was opened up they were running their John Deere 4850 tractor pulling a Deere 3975 pull type forage harvester with a crop processor and Horning 1402 corn head.
Also in the video is a somewhat rare Baler Forage Wagon. Although Baler made silage wagons back in the day they were pretty rare in my area.
Fox River Tractor Company built pull type and self propelled forage harvesters for many years in Wisconsin and were very popular in their time.

Thanks for the awesome video. I had a Fox 6644 just like this one. I put over 6000 hours on mine. The engine was never touched, such a great machine in their day!. It went to another farm after I retired. Earlier years I had a Super 6, F546, and a 3000, all Fox choppers. They were the best! Gotta love the screaming Jimmies!

If it still works, it’s worth more than sweating out massive installments while worrying about a crop being enough to be able to make the payments. I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s on small farms. Some of our equipment was originally horse drawn converted to tractor, like a sickle-bar hay mower. I wouldn’t suggest using a 1920’s equipment today (the Amish don’t even use stuff that antiquated) but if it’s from the 80’s or 90’s and works, why not?

Growing up on a NE WI dairy farm, my Dad had a couple Fox pull-type choppers (one with 1 row corn head & the other with hay pickup head). We upgraded to a 700 series Hesston pulltype and then a 2000/150.

That is one sharp fox chopper if it is original paint. The neighbors had a self propelled fox to open up fields open station 4 71 detroit in it. One night they got done for the day and left it in the field overnight only to find it burned to the ground the next morning. So they bought another one with a cab and Cummins 555 to replace it, they never were able to find out why the other one burned up.

Quite a workhorse back in the day. Still valuable for opening fields to use a pull-type forage harvester. Sure a lot of difference in the new-style rotary heads.

Something seems off with that Fox. Being a Max II with a 6V-71 it ought to match or beat the 4850 for performance. It doesn’t; in fact it is no faster than the 4-71 powered Super D we used to run. Tight recutter screen perhaps? Best thing we did was send the pull type choppers and the Super D down the road in favor of one larger SP chopper. Much much more efficient for manpower.

Hello everyone good vidéo mike Iess our american friend has a fox like this one 6v71 engine strait diesel 4 row coupe i drove it a few times impossible to get enough of the good big roar of a strait diesel because it doesn't purr like the sound of the harvesters these days that it sounds more like a washing machine frankly at the beginning of the month who was used to the v8 or v12 detroit diesel that we have at our farmer friend's house I really wasn't up for hearing the v6 but I was surprised by the sound it made products I love it I should even say that it is my favorite it is less serious than a v8 or a v12 although I love the v8 and v12 detroit diesel selui it is a little less noisy but still amazing especially for us in Alsace we don't have one here, this friend is interested in importing one because the 1880 has no cabin and is very noisy plus a hole in the exhaust and they have more than 90,999 hours so they have served their time well it is surely the next harvester to open our fields for this breeder friend and for our customers who are asking us for more and more silage services and we don't have any personally from my boss we have to ask our friend to lend us the equipment so to be independent 2 fox 3 or 4 ragns would have been pretty great
