Don't forget to start engine after filling with oil then turn engine off to check engine oil after filter has oil in it. Don't over fill the oil.

Thanks for this, i doubt valvoline or even a common mechanic would have caught the filter difference, i’m bringing my own materials next time.

Thank you for this video. You were the only vid to explain the two types of filters for the Buick Encore 1.4. I went to Auto Zone and Oreily's auto and they have no clue of the difference. Finally went to NAPA and they had the filter Gold 100283 with the attached valve. Had I put the other one in probably would have serious engine damage,thanks again.

So, I just did an oil change on my 2017 Encore, it has the Brown UFI cap, I pull that off and what filters in there? The wrong one of course, and that was done by the dealer in Cathedral City CA. I wonder if running the wrong filter has done any damage? If you want it done right, do it do it yourself.

That tip on selecting the right filter was helpful. The only extra step I'd add is to lube the new o ring with a little oil.

Buick Encore == Opel Mokka . It's funny to see how the same model car gets al these model names and brand names. I have the same engine in my Opel Astra. Thanks for the video.

When you reset the 'oil life indicator', and it reads 100%, does this mean that you have 15,000 miles between oil changes? Or does the 'oil life indicator' mechanism actually monitor the quality and viscosity, etc. of the oil and compute how much oil life you have left? Thanks.

I apologize for the much delay here. I was not sure on this one as well, so I looked it up. There seems to be more technology than just a 15,000 mi countdown. I see you have a coolant loss issue as well. Mine is also leaking oil from somewhere. Nothing but problems with this car since we bought it 4 years ago.

A 2017 Buick Encore's oil filter is underneath the car, not in the engine bay facing up. You need to remove the plastic cover housing surrounding where the drain plug is to see it in full glory. Just an FYI...There's just two bolts holding the front cover- remove the two and it can just hang down while you get to the filter.

No new gasket for drain bolt? Or die it not have one.

Sorry for the delay. There is no new gasket on the drain bolt. If you pause the video @9:15, you can see there is a black gasket built into the drain bolt, so you should only have to replace the gasket on the oil filter housing.

So, my 2017 has the UFI setup and says on the cap USE "2519 5775" filter. I think I need the filter with the relief valve onboard?

My used filter had the bypass valve. Auto parts store gave me one without it. The filter had a paper inside that if i understood correctly said there was a filter redesign and no longer needed the bypass on it. Would u happen to know anything about that?

My 2017 Encore came from the factory spin-on oil filter. Not at all like yours.

Sounds like the one on yours is wrong. None of the 2017 encores have a can on them for the filter like that. They all use one or the other shown in this video unless they replaced the entire housing

Loosen and remove 😢the oil filler cap and set it sideways on the hole . This allows air to enter the crankcase which makes the oil drain out a little quicker. The oil filter cap also has a torque setting. You don’t want to tighten it so much that it strips the threads as it’s plastic. I think the torque number is 18 ft lbs???

is there a special trick to remove the oil cap from the engine? tried turning left with resistance, but didn't want to break it, is there some type of release latch? Or just turn it counter-clockwise to unscrew it?

No latch or anything, just have to give it some mustard. Just turn it counter-clockwise to unscrew it. The cap has an o-ring sandwiched between the threads and the oil filter housing, so that initial turn to unscrew the cap can have a bit of resistance. Make sure you have the correct socket, get it fully seated on the top of the oil cap, and then give it some muscle to break it free. If you are using a very short ratchet, it will feel like you have to give a lot of muscle. Go with a longer ratchet for more leverage, and it'll come free.

How reliable has this car been and how many miles does it have if you dont mine me asking

this car has around 48K miles on it. The car is decent, but did not score well on reliability from JD power (2 out of 5). No issues with it up until this point. Mine is a 2014 with 39k. Had an oil leak in the turbo fixed under warranty. That is it so far. Good thing was that a Buick warrant is 4/48 vs 3/36 for Trax. I like it so far. Only annoyance is the seat is only leather on the inside of the seat, thoutside is fake leather and is already cracking.

Changed turbo at 45k. If the car market weren't so screwy I'd say get out while you can if warranty expired, 40 year Buick owner.

The buick tends to do that when it is off. It definitely needs coolant but that’s what i’ve noticed about mine

if i were to change the housing would that be sufficient to change which filter i need? i'm going to replace the drain plug with a ball valve since i'm keeping this car long term.

I do not have enough expertise to know if changing the housing would be sufficient. To get the best and most accurate answer, I'd recommend asking a GM technician GM mechanic. The easiest thing would be to purchase the correct oil filter for your housing. How do I determine which oil cap I have? I own a 2016 Buick encore as well, wanted to learn how to do my own oil changes..

The location of your oil filter housing cap is referenced at 4:44 in the video. So take a look to see where in your engine bay the oil filter housing cap is located. Go pop your hood in your Buick Encore. Grab a flashlight and take a look at your oil filter housing cap. (See 4:44) If you have a Hengst oil filter housing cap, it will be black and have the words "Hengst" written on top. (See 6:50 of the video). If you have this oil filter housing cap, an appropriate oil filter would be a Napa 7674. If you have a UFI oil filter housing cap, it will be brown and won't have any logo on it. There is currently a replacement filter under development for that oil filter housing cap. I'd recommend reading this product notice to further understand the differences between the two. What's the difference between dexos and just 5w-30

Dexos engine oil specifications were designed by GM engineers specifically for GM engines. All 5w-30 oils are not made the same or perform the same, depending on your engine. Especially with this car having a turbo, it is best to choose the oil that GM has approved to meet their specifications to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
