Fully agree, my skin is so much better at 42 than it was at 22. Double cleansing (i love oil cleansing), glycolic acid once a week, retinol and regular vitamin C have completely transformed my pores. I used to have those sebaceous filaments, and now have beautiful clean pores :)

I suffer with moderate to severe Dermatilomania, I don’t have inflamed acne but I do get very congested often. I find oil gritting to be very satisfying, much more so than the horrifying feeling of picking the comedones and then getting hyperpigmentation. I can’t actually sit for 20 minutes with a traditional cleanser so I’m really happy with using an oil cleanser. I tried to use BHA and BP but my congestion just wouldn’t go away but using the oil cleanser got rid of the bumpy texture under my skin in a few days!

Double cleansing has helped tremendously in keeping my pores clear and sebaceous filaments minimized; using tretinoin nightly and BHA once a week has helped even more. I tried a 15min massage with an oil cleanser once, and it did absolutely nothing more than my usual ~30 second oil cleanse.

Oil cleansing was the semi-band-aid answer I was looking for with my skin. It's absolutely incredible. My sebaceous filaments fill up really god damn fast, daily. This has made my skin now actually smooth again, instead of being really rough and shitty from the sebaceous filaments. I am about to start tretinoin for an actual solution long-term that addresses the underlying issue, but yea. Now, some of the recommendations are way over the top. I do 3 minutes of massaging, then hop into the shower and then do a regular cleanse. If I keep on top of it daily, consistently, then my skin stays very smooth. Also hardly any "grits", because there's just not enough in the sebaceous filament for that; it keeps them empty though (then the size of the pore gets smaller). If I go like 2-3 days without doing it, my skin will be rough as shit, and then I get LOADS of these grits, and my skin is instantly really smooth after. Interestingly if my skin is only a little rough (in the middle), then not a whole lot of change happens... I think this is because you can either stay on top of it (where it just dissolves away without any grits), or you wait and then there's enough in the sebaceous filament for it to come lose and all get pulled out with the massaging motion. If there's not enough in there, they don't really come out... so it's then almost worth it to wait until the skin gets rougher, but then you're going to get more pimples and whatnot in the following days, so it's not worth doing that in reality. Better to just chop away at it and return to consistency. I have tried putting the oil on for like 15 minutes, and then massage... but that works terribly for me. No grits at all. I think the oil just melts them away to enough of a degree that they now won't come out with the massaging, so the rest stays stuck in the sebaceous filament. Best results for me by far is to get the oil on (don't be stingy with it) and then start massaging straight away, until the skin feels smooth again For me that's about 3 minutes. If my skin is really rough, then it's about 4 minutes or so, and I use a little extra oil in that case. Hopefully tretinoin works out! don't actually want to have to do this 3-minute oil massaging step every time before hopping into the shower. Oh, I should also add that I do use BHA everyday and I also use AHA (glycolic acid). No where near sufficient. 7:50 - For people with average sebaceous filaments, it won't be dramatic, yea. I ain't average in this regard in the slightest, so don't expect my experience to be your experience. I use the Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil; NOT the pretty pink "Speedy" version. Thicker oil works better (ideal to do it before showering so as you can remove it easier, because it's harder to get off than the Speedy version). 8:35 - It's absolutely sebaceous filaments. Never blackheads, no; doesn't do anything for those (maybe other than act as a preventative, perhaps).

Hi! I’ve been using tret for more that a year. They are minimised, but still there :( I also use SA at am, niacinamide at pm; high frequency wand almost every morning (to regulate sebum production); double cleansing with 3 mins of massage on the nose every morning and I put and leave for a couple of minutes a cleanser with sulphur! BUT to really get rid of them I have a facial every week end. They make me so self conscious of my skin, on top of acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Going out without foundation is a big NO NO. And it’s very very frustrating. This message is not intended to destroy your hopes, but to say “you are not alone” if after months of using tret you will still have the same skin issues as before🥰

Personally using a cleansing oil has made a huge difference for me! I have a lot of sebaceous filaments on my nose and using a cleansing oil helps melt those away. It’s definitely only a temporary solution so I need to use it everyday, but using retinoids and hydroxy acids haven’t worked as well even after consistent use. I think it could be a great alternative if you have sensitive skin and can’t tolerate retinoids and HA’s.

The French use a flat utensil to sweep gently over different, small areas and a tissue in the other hand to collect the detritrus. They are squeezed out once a week or month depending how much you have. It's easy, doesn't hurt and cleans those nasty things out very well.

I do a "deep" oil cleanse once a week. I personally only get sebaceous filaments, and my skin is still getting used to AHA and BHAs. I love how it feels on my skin. I often get a lot of texture between my nose and my cheeks, and I find that the oil helps to calm that area and exfoliate it quite well. I will just put on an oil cleanser and sit down to watch TV while I give my facea massage 😂

I only recently stopped. Okay so I found that I did get those grits and my skin did clear up a lot doing this but as time went on of me doing this I started to notice how this disrupted my skin barrier. So I've stopped . Now I just massage for 1-3 minutes and rinse it off. Same results.

Once a week, I use chinese "blackhead cleaning pack" to clean out the "blackheads" or "whiteheads" on my nose. 3 steps, takes like 35 mins to finish. First nose mask 15 mins to make the "blackheads" pop out, then a little tool to push them out completely (for my nose, I could clean out many white heads and oily stuff every time), and finally another 15 mins nose mask to calm the nose. It works very well. My nose is not so oily any more and my pores are not visible for at least a few days after treatment. Just I need to do once a week coz oil and dirt fill up the pores quickly.

My pores are filamenting up but i learned something when I achieved 100% clearance - it affected me in no way whatsoever 😂😂😂 i literally scarred myself picking them out in my youth, and clearing them did not make me look cuter, younger, happier, fresher, or more even lol...life lesson, peeps!

I tried it, it worked, deep cleaned my pores buttt I actually didnt like the result 😑 if you are older than 30-35 years old, if you are not in your 20s probably you will not like it neither. My damn pores became more visible when they are EMPTY 😶 obviously its because my skin is not young anymore. They didnt shrink. I got holes in my face after 30 min oil cleansing 🙊in addition to that I broke out very badly, like most of my pore turned into little pimples, some of them real big pimples. I dont recommend this technique for face areas except T zone, even just nose is better. I am 42 btw, have well cared but oily acne prone skin.

Though, it’s mainly my nose, some cheeks & beneath lip/chin area that I have S.F. I’ll consider going back to Salicylic Acid cleansing.

Just using a oil cleanser on my dry skin everything is red and inflammed afterwards. It's worse with micellar water and a cotton pad. I'm so happy I found a chemical sunscreen that doesn't burn my skin and that I can cleanse with a gentle water based cleanser. I still double cleanse with benzoyl peroxyde afterwards but I just pat the stuff on my skin without rubbing. 5:40

Can you recommend a face cleanser that doesn’t have fragrance/parfum for oily skin ppl? I saw iherb has Cetaphil but I’m Canadian and I can’t even find it on their website.

I feel so hopeless. I've tried cleansing my face and have used the biore strips for awhile now and it barely helps with the spinulosa... it's the one aspect of my face that makes me feel so self conscious. I don't get how there's no permanent treatment for it.

regarding the nose hair clump dots, I'm in tretinoin so my understanding is I am not supposed to use things that peel off like nose strips, is there an alternative for people on tret or are we doomed to have nose hair clusters? lol

I'm torn between starting retinol or adapalene gel for my sebaceous filaments. I was using Paula's Choice 2% BHA and while it worked at first, it doesn't seem to be having the same effect. Same with clay masks. Tried an oil cleanser but hated the feeling. 😓

Probably azelaic acid but I've seen derms who've gone through pregnancy do pregnancy videos and say that both of those are okay to use (Dr. Sam Ellis, Tea with MD, Dr. Jenny Liu). But always check with your doctor.
