Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
Season - 17
Episode - 03
Filmed on Location at - Scotland, United Kingdom
With the ambition to become an artist, Scott Naismith studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. In June 2000 he left with a BDes in Illustration and printmaking. Since graduating Scott has been a full time artist, working from his studio in Glasgow. Much of his time is spent travelling around the country looking for inspiration for another depiction of the Scottish landscape. The many lochs, glens and isles of the West coast are amongst his favourite subject matter for his vibrant and atmospheric oils. Scott has been lecturing part time since 2004 and now lectures one day a week at the creative arts department of West College Scotland.
Scott Naismith uses vivid colours in a vigorous application to represent the fast changing light conditions of the West coast of Scotland. Colour use often becomes an entirely emotional response to the subject while values can remain representational. The love he has for his native Scottish countryside is portayed in his work through an ebullient energy with which he handles the colour with palette knife and brush.
Scotts recent work concentrates on transitional skies and the many colours involved when light breaks through cloud. These changing skies from dark to light are a metaphor for optimism and hope. After a miraculous recovery from cancer by his father, recent marriage and birth of his 2 children, Scott Naismith draws upon a great positivity and energy.
You can contact the artist about their art tips or art techniques directly via their website at scottnaismith.com
The Colour In Your Life fine art TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. thank you thank you thank you for blending the worlds of acrylic and oil together! I am an acrylic painter who is trying oils for the first time and finding them difficult. I will keep at it but seeing that I do not need to leave my acrylics behind is brilliant. Cheers!

I've been a Scott fan for years now because I've always used Magenta, "the closest to" Cyan that I can find and primary yellow for my watercolor primaries. Ive had a NDE 20 years ago and he paints closest to Heaven that Ive seen when it comes to color. That blue looks almost violet blue going on then smears out to more cyan blue. Interesting!

Scott, Thank you for teaching and sharing your expertise without charge. I need to know just a couple of things please. What kind of oil do you use to spread all over the acrylic before your oil colors? Is it liquein, walnut, Gamblin? Do you mix oil into the paint as well? I would appreciate your answer. Your the best with your CYM and color wheel! Love your method and instruction. Thanks again!

I don't get it, does anyone know how oil paint can permanently adhere to acrylic paint? Ive always been told that acrylic is plastic when it dries. This sounds so cool, but how can it be archival ?
@screeningmimi
@screeningmimi 3 жыл бұрын
It seems to be the same theory that we use oil paint over gesso which is essentially acrylic. I have several paintings, done over 20 years ago with acrylic beneath, and they are still in good shape. I should add that I've only painted oil over very dry acrylic. I'm not exactly sure what he's doing. ;- )

The new pad looks great / very clean too. Curious if you have tried using cold wax to add body in oils? Side benefit is the matt finish helps for copying work for print - less reflection. Anyway, enjoy watching you work.

Hi Joanne, this was the first filmed episode for the UK team so a few little areas where we can improve and have improved since more episodes were filmed. We do have subtitles attached to this episode which you can enable on KZfaq if that makes it a little easier to follow. Scott's work is well worth the sound issue though, I definitely agree there.
@ScottNaismithArtist
@ScottNaismithArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Fair comment Joanne, there was a minor mic issue on the day which may have affected things slightly. As Graeme says, this is almost like a pilot for the shows to come from the UK and the team did great for a first outing.

Thanks gentlemen for responding & clarifying, I watched the Sally Lancaster episode from the UK team a few days ago & the sound was fine - I should have watched in the correct order :) Graeme, I commented because I already tried the subtitles (despite being from Scotland myself, originally) & I'm afraid KZfaq doesn't speak Scottish well at all, so I went back to fiddling with the volume control LOL. Scott, I hope the rest of Australia likes your work as much as I do - best of luck.

@ColourinyourlifeAu 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback, we are always striving to make improvements. Episodes are not always edited in the order that they are filmed hence why you are seeing this one after Sally and Max. I'll see if we can improve the Scottish, though I think that is a tricky language for anyone outside of the UK to understand.

try to paint real stuff without white 😯 what you paint is not required so much skill, because you are not use white, therefor no tones diference can be seen in your painting, all the same saturation. white indeed can kill your pure colours, be aware.
