Can you use oil paints on paper? Why would you want to use oil paint on paper? I take a look at how I use oil paint on paper for preparation. When you need to make color notan studies, check composition or test color then painting on paper is a cost effective solution. Here is how to use two options: acrylic gesso or oil based primer.

@GarrisonFall
@GarrisonFall 21 күн бұрын
@a.humphries8678 You've probably found them already. If not, shops sell pads of paper that is sealed for use with oil paints. They are handy because they're easy to transport, the paper sides are stuck down so there's no need to tape each to wood, and they're cheaper than canvas. I still find it useful to prime the paper with an Acrylic gesso/primer because the paper is sometimes too slippery.

Thanks! My paper buckled a lot when I did the initial gesso after following your tips. I used 250 GSM Canson watercolour paper but do not know how to fix that problem, any advise will be appreciated!
@MalcolmDewey
@MalcolmDewey 6 жыл бұрын
The 250gsm could be a factor. I use 300gsm, but I would have to try this out to check. Two factors are more likely: the wetness of the gesso and the stretching of the paper. First off gesso should be quite thick and paste-like. If it too wet it will soak the paper more resulting in more buckling. Even so it is necessary to secure the paper along the edge with masking tape. This makes the paper stretch and flatten as it dries. If the paper can move under the tape then it will not flatten. Sometimes the masking tape is not holding paper securely. I hope that will help.
@priscillaneow4069

Malcolm Dewey thank you! I will try it again perhaps securing it down a little more tightly with the tape this time. I did add a tiny bit of water to my acrylic primer which may have caused this so will do it again without the water at all. Thanks again! :)

Thank you for your video, it was very helpful! I noticed you mentioned it dries faster with gesso, but how long does it take for the painting to be completely dried? Does it depend on how many layers were used? Thank you!! :)
@MalcolmDewey

Yes, exactly - plus weather conditions. Slower in humid climates, faster is dry ones. I live in a warm climate and my paintings are usually ready to varnish with retouch varnish after a month. But always check the thicker paint, especially white paint seems to dry slower.

This is really helpful thank you. I wanted to dip my toes into oils because even though i love watercolour as a medium, sometimes i really just want those thick brush marks and texture. However, i paint as a form of relaxation and hobby only and do not have a lot of space to store a ton of canvas' that will never see the light of day once they're painted on. It'll be much easier to store sheets of primed paper over bulky canvas.
