Beginners guide to Oil Painting Having a great surface to work on is very important, if not the most important. Here is my first Oil Painting video... Making and preparing Canvas boards and cheap boards to practise on. I share with you my experience on the best and cheap way to get started.
Painting on an inadequate surface will cause the rich colour of you paint sink in and go dull. The paint should glide effortless across the surface without being dry and unmanageable. I goes though the way I approach it.

Thank you for your video! I’m professional painter and little nerd about all these grounds/supports, and I honestly watched hundreds of videos about it, but this one is the best ❤

Thank you so much for this. I found your channel via this video as I searched for beginners oil painting videos. I have given up on watercolour, I just don’t get it, but in the past I have dabbled with Faber Castell pastel pencils of which I have quite a lot gathering dust……. I am trying to get my graphite pencil work improving and I have recently been inspired to start learning portrait art. Being over 70 now I don’t know how many years I have to learn 😂 but I do know that no matter how the project turns out each time, I will have thoroughly enjoyed it and even if it’s a disaster, I come away from the easel relaxed and keen to try again. I really admire what I have seen of your pastel work and I hope to see your oils as you develop your channel and Patreon which I will be signing up to very soon as I feel confident I can learn from you. Best wishes and many thanks 🙏

Hi Graham, you are welcome... thanks for the great feedback... much appreciated... Good to know the KZfaq search is working too. Watercolour can be frustrating for sure... I love graphite, pastels and Oils. Mainly focused on these the last 40 year or so. That is a great sign that you come away from the easel relaxed and look forward to more. Art is such a wonderful way to connect to our deeper self. Aware of being aware is all that is needed to feel the wonders of this life. I will be uploading my first skin tone study soon both here on KZfaq and the real time version on Patreon. Having to get my head around technology to make it all work is a challenge for sure. 🤣. Take care... all the very best with your re-newed love for art. 🙏💕

I’m definitely going to try the Michael non-absorbent Harding primer. Also, really like the idea of folding the canvas around. Thanks for Sharing!

It makes all the difference for sure... you won't be disappointed. Folding the canvas protects the board from moisture and bangs. All the very best Phil 🙏

Hi, Have you tried the clear in it? Im wondering if after a few coats of clear, it might either darken my natural linen canvas or create a cloudy milky affect? Im looking for a totaly transparent primer. thanks

Hi Dave I've read a previous post which says you use linen flax canvas Can you please tell me what brand you use? And is it fine medium or heavy weave?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 4 ай бұрын
Hi Paul, the brand is Loxley UK firm... It is a mix of cotton and flax canvas if my memory serves me well. Fine to medium weave. 🙏

Can you do a lesson on how you frame your pastels?
@DavePortersArt

I tend to get my work framed at the local framer to save me time... so not geared up for it now. I used to frame my own work many years ago, but find it easier to just pass it onto a profession framer now. I would recommend investing in museum quality non reflective glass... it makes all the difference 🙂🙏

Had many MDF pieces cut out but many of them warped with time, now I know to coat the back as well, thanks to your instructions. This is such big help. Quick question, can I use oil based varnish or maybe acrylic varnish for the back?? cuz I already have those on hand.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 5 ай бұрын
You are welcome... best to use the acrylic varnish first and if you like go over with the oil. or two coats of acrylic.🙏

Just a cautionary tale. I bought panels with glued on pre primed canvas years ago and oil painted on them. Now, all those are falling apart. This is due to the glue getting thru to the painting surface thru the pores of the canvas. Canvases are almost never non porous. So, without knowing, I was paint on glue.

Sorry to hear you have had such an issue. I have oval pet portraits I painted over 40 years ago using exactly the same materials, and the colours are still the same. I use top quality flax canvas and unibond glue which is really good stuff. Not much more I can say really. All the best. 🙏

@@DavePortersArt it does seem to vary by glue. I have other panels that were done with a different glue that 'so far' have held together. The time it takes for the glue to dislodge from the canvas and paint layer will likely vary by many variables. Varnishing has also slowed the dislodging, but only by a short time. In any case, if the canvas lets glue thru, it's a gamble with any glue product. Good luck!
