I would say: The hardest thing for a beginner is to see light and dark values consciously in reality and while painting.

For beginners I'd advise to not get frustrated by early failures. Its how every great artist found their way. Failure is how we practice

I’ll say the hardest part of beginning oil painting is the use of medium. I will recommend to not use it until you learn the actual drying times for your own particular style and thickness of paint that you use for at least one painting. And notice some colors dry more quickly than other colors. It seems fundamental to learn this through experience before considering medium. And just do small paintings like 5”x7” to get used to everything. Small isnt the easiest but just the least worry about wasting supplies. Doing such small painting is a good exercise anyway then to always go for standard size for whatever…portrait or landscape still life etc.

Great video. Being a new artist myself, I struggle with the type of surface to start painting on and how to prep it properly. There are so many choices it's hard to decide what type of canvas/board to start painting on and how to prep the surface. Also, some videos show people starting with a mixture of mineral spirits and paint to make a thin wash to cover the surface and start layering thicker paint after the first thin coat but other videos state that this is NOT a good way to start a painting because the thin paint will not hold up (bond) properly.

A cheap electric orbital sander from the hardware store is very useful in getting an even texture on the gesso layer. When we do it by hand, we tend to develop patterns in the ground layer that may later dictate how the surface accepts the paint.

...and, especially when machine sanding, beware the dust !. Gesso makes fine dust and you need to keep it out of your lungs. Mask up !

You explain everything wonderfully. I have a problem of this kind: I cannot understand why some painters use oil from the very beginning, even first they re-paint the primed underpaint with a thin layer. Of course, they no longer use turpentine but oil, but how does this compare to the fat-on-lean technique? If I need a thick coat, can I then use the paint straight from the tube and the painting will not crack? When I tried to paint like that, it didn't work out at all and I went back to building layers. Best wishes

I used to make my own black oil - lead carbonate mixed with linseed oil heated until the linseed turns opaque and appear black. Now I use Liquin Fine Detail which has almost the exact same working properties of black oil. Regular Liquin imitates the Maroger medium which is black oil mixed with mastic varnish. The varnish gives the black oil the gell like properties.

Yeah, never been a fan of Maroger and black oil. It's overkill with the modern products we have today.

Vos conseils me seraient précieux. Encore merci pour ce partage.

How would you mix the oil and paint, still in the tubes? I am currently using Bob Ross paints and they are very oily and some tubes are usually separated. To dry out the paints, I put all the colors on a piece of cardboard or a paper bag, to draw out all the excess oil. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks Florent ! Just a question : how do you keep the paint tubes: straight up with the cap on or upside down? I have tried both ways and the oil runs down the tube and sticks the tubes together. Also, how to avoid the oil coming out first on the palette ? TX
@FlorentFargesarts
@FlorentFargesarts 2 жыл бұрын
I keep there flat and have ko problems. Clean the caps before closing. If oil drops, there is no real option unfortunately, just remove the excess oil.

I am only just getting into oil painting and am a bit worried about the 'fat over lean' principle. What is the best way to create thin layers, then thicker layers on top? And does this also apply to my water-soluble Daler Rowney Georgian paints too?
