I have been teaching myself to paint for about eight months, and I find roses the most difficult. maybe until now! I really like your explanation and calmness, and thanks for sharing your brush strokes! You have a great talent, and I just subscribed! 😁

Your also playful with your brushstrokes. I try but just feel like I’m weird about it. You also mix a new color every time you go back to your palette. I have been doing this. I wish I could take lessons from you Jason!

Thank you for another fantastically useful demo! I love painting flowers, but I consider my beloved roses far too challenging. Your demo has given me the courage to attempt it this year! Would you consider doing demos on other flowers as well, say peonies or hydrangeas? I have both in my garden and have felt "stuck" trying to attempt to paint peonies. I began a painting last summer of a hydrangea blossom which has lain unfinished. Your insights would be so helpful!

What kind of medium did you use from your small bottle ? Very clear and calm tutorial - very helpful for beginners

Thanks for the nice comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The medium is one mix myself. It is the traditional medium of linseed oil, damar varnish and turpentine...equal parts of each.

Thanks for watching! That medium I used in the video is one I mixed myself. It is the traditional medium of one-third linseed oil, one-third damar varnish and one-third turpentine.

Thank you for the nice comment! It looks to me like I am using mostly a Rosemary & Co Series 2025 Filbert, and then a Utrecht Chungking Hog Bristle Flat for the background.

Thank you so much Sir u r amazing , I am using cheap synthetic brushes and its frustrating , they soak the turpentine very quickly too also whenever i apply it leaves a blob of paint on the sides of the stroke

It looks like a #6 or #8 filbert hog bristle brush. Chinese hog bristle brushes are the basic standard for oil paint. Thanks!

Silver Grand Prix and Blick Masterstroke are really good brushes. You could also try Rosemary & Co. which is based in the UK.

What surface are you painting on?

Thanks for watching! The surface is primed canvas. Fredrix sells it in pads that you can tear off like paper sheets.

i liked your advice in reference to blocking in color first and not making your lights and darks 50 50. however, your finished product looked a little unfinished.

i respect that. i guess i am a little frustrated with the task of painting effective roses. i will try your technique of blocking, and less of one stroke type of flower painting. thanks for posting the video

Don't give up! One of the things you learn as you become an artist is that there will always be as many (if not more) failures than successes. Even the best artists have off days when things just don't work. Keep practicing and you will get there.
