This video demonstrates one way to paint owl eyes using Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint. Since this painting, I've gone back to using traditional oils. If you are using traditional oil paints, the same ideas and techniques would apply.
Many painters prefer to start with what’s in the background or furthest away and come forward. I have a different approach; I like to start with the most intense part of the painting first and work my way out from there. Painting this way ensures the viewer’s focus goes to the eyes because everything else has been built up in a complementary way around them.
The total painting time shown here is about 4.5 hours. Between the two eyes, it’s about 9 hours of painting.
