Thick oil paint looks great, but it takes forever to dry-so what to do?
James Gurney shows two ways to pre-texture the surface with a painterly impasto layer that he then accentuates by with a glaze after it dries. He demonstrates these techniques with black and white oil paint and then applies them to three illustrations of T.rex that he produced for Ranger Rick Magazine. James has developed these methods from almost 40 years of professional work for National Geographic, Scientific American, and the US Postal Service.
Learning these secrets helps you achieve a rich and realistic paint surface, regardless of the subject matter you prefer to paint.
This is an extended sample from a tutorial video called "Unconventional Oil Techniques."

You're just friggin' brilliant. It's not just that you're a superb artist, it's that you're great at sharing & teaching your knowledge & experience. (Is there a way of doing something like this to add thickness & texture to watercolor? Hum? )
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, P. Taylor. First option for texture with transparent watercolor is to use rough paper. Then you get the advantage of the paper's sizing and fiber texture. Alternately, you can apply a texture over your paper with a combination absorbent ground. acrylic modeling paste, and gesso, and you can get specific textures in specific places, but the quality of your washes will change. Best thing to do is experiment on swatches of paper, and then rub it, bend it, subject it to light, splash it with water and see what happens.

I'm so happy I found this channel! I used to visit the local library with my granfather (must be around 20 years ago now), and the Dinotopia books were always my favourites! They still have a special place in my heart, and were a great escape for an awkward, lonely, and bullied girl like I was. Thank you! Btw: I still love art and dinosaurs.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I am a big fan. Random comments... I am convinced that Rembrandt occasionally used flakes and clumps of lead white that he prepared beforehand and stuck them to the support while painting. The titanium white with metallic drier will often wrinkle. That might be a good thing, depending. Years down the road, it will crack. Lead white with no added zinc is much tougher and flexible. For about 15 years I have made modeling paste using chalk bound in linseed oil. Chalk = barite, powdered alabaster, marble dust, or whatever.

Hi James. What if you need to texture a surface ONLY for the purpose of holding another medium, such as Pan Pastels? I don't want to buy pastelmat board, because it is VERY expensive for very few sheets. I'm thinking instead that I can prime Bristol board in order to hold my Pan Pastels to the surface.

@JamesGurney

Yes, if you use modeling paste alone, it will soak in the oil and dry matte. If you want it not to sink in, you can let it dry and then top coat it with acrylic gloss medium. Then the oil will tend to float more on the surface, but it should still adhere well.
