CASE DETAILS
Catherine and her husband of five years, Charles, disappeared together from Brunswick, Georgia on April 8, 1980.
The couple was en route from their winter home in Miami, Florida to their house in Scarsdale, New York, driving a black custom model 1979 Lincoln Continental with the New York license plate number CRR-CBR.
They checked into a Holiday Inn along Interstate 95 and U.S. 341 at 3:51 p.m. and took their belongings to their room, Room 149. At around 5:00 p.m., a Georgia Highway Patrol officer saw the couple's car south of Brunswick near some restaurants. Neither the Romers nor their car were ever seen again.
Hotel management called the police on April 11, as Charles and Catherine had not checked out and Room 149 did not appear to have been occupied since they checked in.
Charles kept a detailed travel diary, including notes of what he and his wife ate at every meal. The diary was found in the room, along with the couple's luggage and some potted plants Catherine was taking home to New York. There was one pair of glasses and a book lying on the nightstand next to one of the beds, and financial papers, including checkbook and income tax forms, were spread out on the desk.
An extensive search of the area turned up no indication of the Romers' whereabouts and their car could not be found either. One theory was that someone who wanted to rob the couple followed them up from Miami, killed them and disposed of their car, but there is no actual evidence to support this. Their cases remain unsolved.
Hug the ones you love for you never know when it might be the last time you see them.

If as you say they were creatures of habit, doing the same thing each year, staying in the same hotel and writing a daily journal, would the journals from previous years shed any light on eating places they visited? 🇬🇧

That was completely what I was going to write in the comments. Past journals, past cheque or credit payments for food, past holiday photos. Especially since they enjoyed revisiting places they liked. They might have even been keen to catch up with the restaurant staff and savour their cooking.

The couple checked into the hotel on Tuesday, April 8, 1980 at 3:51 p.m. They took their belongings to their room. Around 5 p.m. that evening an officer with the Georgia Highway Patrol recalled seeing the couple's car south of Brunswick parked near a group of restaurants.

Maybe they had a couple of drinks with dinner, and after a long day's drive, a big meal, overall fatigue and possibly darkness had fallen by the time they left the restaurant, they simply and accidentally drive into a waterway near their hotel. If restaurant still exists, I would backtrack from there to the hotel.

Given their age I would think it is probably more likely they had a medical emergency and were trying to reach a hospital. As you said there was a restaurant in the hotel, so going out to eat when that tired makes little sense for an elderly couple. Perhaps they ran out of pills and were looking for a pharmacy to refill a medication, elderly people have concerns younger age groups do not, something medical related makes more sense when it comes to getting an older couple to leave a comfortable room after a long days driving.

@shellz831

NONE OF THAT MAKES SENSE. Yall watch a bunch of true crime videos and think that how real Detective work is done If they were that hungry, being that tired...they would have stopped along the way BEFORE getting to the hotel. They wouldnt hop to getting back in the car, they would go to the restaurant at the hotel. These are not struggling people living paycheck to paycheck. Also, its highly IMPOSSIBLE that the both had medical issue. The other would have gotten help from the hotel full of YOUNGER people.

According to this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h96FeNWckpncepc.html The son of the couple said they had a regular habit of eating at the hotel's restaurants that they stayed at on their trips home every year, so they did not go out after arriving at their rooms. A patrol officer reported seeing the car driving south on 95 back towards Florida later the same evening they checked into the hotel on 8 April, he had noticed the unusual vanity license plates, but did not see the driver. According to hotel staff interviewed back in 1980 the reservation had been made by a travel firm of some kind, but no invoice was ever submitted for payment, so whomever made their reservation was never found. I now suspect foul play, since if your job was to help plan peoples trips, payment would be a normal part of that job. Perhaps robbery or car theft was the motive, but it looks a lot less like an accident after watching that video about the case.

@@shellz831 LOL. Do you really picture the refined gentry of the 80's travelling in their car with fries on their laps and their cup holders full of soda? Who knows but good thing that both the old and the young belong in the world!

Perhaps one of them started feeling ill on the drive from Florida. They got to the hotel unloaded for the night and then left to seek medical care instead of eating in the hotel restaurant. They probably looked up the nearest hospital in the phone book and might explain why they left the jewelry - because they wouldn't want to part with it at the hospital. Nearest hospital in the 1980s may have been in a different direction. Or they may have needed to travel a town or two over and had a medical complication on the way.

I’m not professional at this, and I only saw what was shown, but that pile of debris; I wouldn’t mind seeing a few more scans of that. To me it looks like a car flipped upside down and is sitting at a 35 ish degree angle. The shape of it looks like an old front bumper, and right behind that it appears to be a wheel. The wheel is what caught my attention because it was so perfectly circular. Upon a second watch, there seems to be something behind the wheel and it follows the same shape of the circle in front of it… which would seem like two wheels. With the way a vehicle would sit, it’d match. Also it looked to have sharp clean angles much like the bumper had. Along with that, it being a marina, and very old, a lot of sediment would have been kicked up by now, and that would explain why there’s only part of a vehicle visible. The other thing I wanna point out that is going to make this search hard is the rear wheels have fender wheel covers. This obscures part of the tire. It being 40 years old, the tires are definitely flat, so if the vehicle is still on its wheels, and is buried even a couple inches, you’re not going to be able to detect a rear wheel. I know on these searches, the easiest thing to identify is a wheel because circles aren’t common, so I wouldn’t look so much for wheels, but look for flat shapes. If the front end is in mud, the odds of locating it based on wheels is slim to none. To avoid that scenario, I wouldn’t rule out a vehicle just because you can’t see wheels.

I live about 45 miles from Brunswick Ga. I have been in the state of Ga since 1995. My husband was stationed at Ft Stewart in 1995. I can tell you there are many things that happen in these areas of Ga. I have heard many local people talk about if you want to get rid of something, these areas are the best to do it in. Because of all the water and wildlife. There would be no remains. The area that my husband and I retired into here in Ga, the people did not like new comers coming in, they didn't care for military coming in. This is where God has placed us in our life as retirees of the Army of 29 yrs. I can only imagine what it must of been back in 1980. God rest the Romer's and all others that may have come into harms way. God bless you all for the things you do help all the families that you do. GOD SPEED to you all.

Perhaps Mrs. Romer had a run in her last pair of stockings and needed to get some before going to dinner. If she wore all that jewelry, she was no slouch in her manner of dressing. Perhaps someone had a headache and needed to get a pain reliever from the drug store. There are many reasons they could have left the hotel before eating. I have had to do this when needing something while traveling. Check in at the hotel first and get the personal items secure, then go get what is needed. They would find a nice place to eat and frequent that establishment during future visits. They looked forward to this and building relationships with owners and waitstaff. I used to live in Brunswick in the 86 87. I live a couple of hours away now. Visit often. We have seen many hurricanes since then that changed the waterways. Thanks for looking!

So this story has me wanting to do my family's background history and maybe find new relatives. I don't hear my last name Romer very often. Anyways I love what you guys are doing. Here's to you bringing more people home.

I say go for it. I wish I knew how myself. I'm first generation on my dads side born in the US, when they left Iran in the late 70s it was for a reason and when they came here the last name was changed. My father was around 23 when they came here. He was working and got hurt bad, my mom was his nurse. The day he was released from the hospital my mom agreed to a date. My dad was the only boy in his family, 4years after coming to the US his sister went shopping in Sacramento. They were on there way back to the car when hit by a DD. His 2 older sisters died at the scene and the baby sister held on for a day. I was 21 when I lost my mom and 25 when I lost my dad to cancer. My only brother took his life 1/1/20. So now it's just me and my two kids. I'd love to meet any new family.. I've always wanted to have a big family Christmas, who knows maybe one day. You should teach others how to if you do find your relatives 🙏 From Va Beach Virginia

I have questions about this case. How long does a car deteriorate in fresh water vs. salt water after 40 years? I ask this question because Brunswick, GA is right next to the Atlantic Ocean. With hurricanes, is it possible that the car could have been sweeped out to sea? Would this warrant the use of the magnetometer? I hope they can be found, but it might be a long shot since so many years have passed. 🙏 Praying for the family.

I would imagine if anything, a car could be completely buried in a storm surge. They’ve had other cases, like the one recently where they man was missing more than a decade and his truck has been found with the roof ripped off. They didn’t find his remains believing they were ripped out by current.

We made a lot of car trips when we were young and our Grandfather got his car serviced , filled the gas tank , had wipers and tires checked to make sure it was roadworthy for the next day's mileage at every stop we made . Wonder if Charles Romer did that and drove into water near an auto service station that was there 40 odd years ago ???

In beginning of video,, Looking where u standing, c/o about mother nature. and kind of plants that grow from water. In 1980, I think that area was full of water. May look dry to u, but if that was water in 1980 and car went in. Silt/sand fill in that car.. you could actually be standing on car and never know it.. Coastline down gulf do this all time, change where the drifts are through erosion from weather and flooding. Have you thought of metal detecting dry areas near old sandy filled in areas around boat docks or marshes where car could of gone in?

As a "rich" couple I'd expect them to go to a nicer restaurant than the one at the hotel, some place they'd go every year. Also does anyone remember any road work being done that year? I'd suspect that the car was inadvertently left in drive being tired and or distracted. If it was a crime it was a random crime of opportunity and occurred away from the hotel.

@adventureswithpurpose May I suggest talking with the family about where they would talk about eating at their favorite restaurants or favorite foods while in FL. As they were on their way home, they may have gone somewhere local that the family has forgotten. Armed with a local map from the years they visited, it might help someone remember a location. The lovely lady you spoke with has a great memory of the area. She is a huge asset in this one, I feel. Keep up the work you are doing. Drive/dive safe. Your entire crew is so so blessed, loved and appreciated.
