This is the second episode in the Botswana Trip 2022 video series. In the previous episode, Francois van der Westhuizen and I spent four days exploring Khwai’s Magotho region and we had amazing leopard and lion sightings. In this episode we drive back to Maun to pick up our wifes, Tabby and Steph, and along the way spot two packs of wild dogs.
We return to Magotho campsite in Khwai for another five days and have some of the best elephant sightings of the whole trip. We also spend an unforgettable morning exploring the Mbudi River on Mokoros and end our trip with a helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta, which included a Champagne stop in the middle of nowhere!
In the next episode we drive down to Botswana’s largest and wildest game reserve, the Central Kalahari, where we spend three nights at Deception Valley.

Thank you for sharing your trip. We had a fabulous trip to the Okavango delta - wild camping as part of our overall trip to Botswana. Had great mokoro canoe trips, a plane trip over the delta and lots of animal sightings. However we didn't see any lions nor wild dogs.

Your video helped me develop the courage to do overlanding trips in Botswana. BTW, I visited Hoedspruit twice many years ago to visit Kruger NP, and it almost feels like you are in California. Love it.

Great video of an area I really love. We stayed at Maghoto and Mbudi this year, doing the Mokoro trip there also. (we actually had the campsite right next to the boat-station) I took away some great infos on some spots we left out the last years, but I was wondering about the the part between the cutline and Mababe village, as it isn't mentioned at all in your videos?
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
I have never stayed in that area, but I’ve seen some pretty cool things between Mababe and the cutline, like those wild dogs in this video. For me, however, it’s too close to civilisation.

Great video. Thanks. Can you tell us the brand and model of the external mic you use? Also are you importing external bird sounds? Thanks.
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
I use a Rode Video Mic Pro with a deadcat when I film with my Canon R6. I also record lots of animal/bird sounds and soundscapes at different locations and time of the day when I’m on laction, and then overlay them where necessary during editing. The reality is that it’s often too windy or noisy to get perfect sound in each sighting. I make notes of all the birds I hear during each drive and activity and then add those specifcally in post-processing to recreate an authentic background chorus.

Thanks so much for the reply. I’m planning to do the same with the bird sounds. Wind is such a problem.

Love to watch your beautiful videos, so good. Maps and graphics are awesome and very helpful. How long it takes to drive from Magotho to Xakanaxa. Can you do a round trip in a day plus a boat trip at Xakanaxa camp. We are planning May 1, 2023.
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dilip. Magotho to Xakanaxa is a bit for a day trip if you ask me. Why don’t you rather do the mokoro trip from Mdudi Camp instead?

@The Safari Expert Yes, mokoro trip from Mbudi, thank you. Magotho to Xakanaxa drive is how long?
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
@@dilipkakkad2260 It’s actually only about 50km, but in that area, that’s quite far 😅 I suppose if you make a whole day of it, it’s doable 🙂

great video as always. One question for curiosity: when at around 17min20 you said you've received a message about a leopard, and then about lions, how was that communication? Did someone you`ve crossed paths with told you? Or do you have any radio connection with local guides?
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
We stopped to chat to other self-drivers and guides. Our little handheld radios was only strong enough to communicate over a very short distance, but as you may have seen in episode 1, they did help on occasions.

Hi safari expert how can I do a drive botswana and what is the best routes in Kruger for the big seven and sable
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert Жыл бұрын
Keegan, Drive Botswana is a company that can help you put a Botswana adventure together. Their details are in the video description. Regarding Kruger: your best chance of seeing the Big 7 on ONE drive would have to be driving from Orpen to Satara on the H7, but finding rhino there is a challenge. For sable, drive the S36!
