OKINAWA Farmstay | Best WWOOFing Experience Ever!!!

7 жыл бұрынMy second WWOOFing experience! This time I stayed on a farm in Ogimi Village, Okinawa, Japan. Every day we alternated between working in the fields and helping out at the organic restaurant attached to the farm. I'll never forget our host's kindness and all of the sweet memories we made together. If you have a few weeks to spare, I highly recommend giving WWOOFing in Okinawa a try! It's one of the best forms of cultural immersion and offers a much deeper level of interaction with the local community.

Hi yuchiverse, my name is Lukas Vopper, I am 21 years old and from Cologne (Germany). Since quite a while now I am thinking of volunteering on Okinawa. Somehow I feel a deep connection to the culture, the people, their way of living, especially their diet. I am very much concerned about a "healthy" livestyle and the people from Okinawa are my idols! Do you know a way how to settle on Okinawa? I havn't started anything for education yet but mostly I love working in the garden, growing food and working in a restaurant. Do you have any advices for me how to realize my dream? Kind regards :)

I see in the comments that you speak Japanese. I speak a decent amount of Japanese aswell (been having a private course since september with a Japanese old lady haha), but how much would you say it made your daily life easier there? I'm going WWOOFing from the end of June till September, and just wondering how much it impacts helping other WWOOFers, and how neccessary you thought being able to speak Japanese was?

Hi! I think being able to speak basic Japanese really makes the experience more special. The village I was in, nobody knew English. Would have missed out on a lot of meaningful conversations without having studied Japanese first.

So is there a time frame that you can do this? Like you can only stay for X amount of time? I would love to do this say for a year at minimum. Just found out about WWOOF today and know very little. Thanks in advance!

It depends on the host! Some prefer short-term, others long-term. This is something you'd need to discuss with them. WWOOFing experiences can be as short as 2 weeks and as long as several years. =] So yes, you can definitely do it for a year, you just need to find a host who's on the same page.

Thank you for sharing your adventure with us .. You gave me courage to go for it.. But I'm still afraid of two things : I don't speak japanese and I wear Hijab (muslim girl). Will this pose problem? I want to be WWOOFing in japan so BADLY !! Love from Algeria, Imene. 😊❤

Hello! I'm so happy to hear you're going to go for it! I don't think wearing a Hijab will pose a problem. As for Japanese, it is definitely a lot more convenient if you know at least some of the basics. The village I volunteered in didn't have any English speakers. Depending on where you choose to WWOOF, however, locals' English abilities may vary!

There are many countries on the website worldwide not only Japan... You exchange room and board for working on farms, **travel not included.

Great video! Now I am planning to sign up but Im just curious if they are still going to accept application especially in light of COVID 19 situation. Do you plan to do this kind of activity?

I'm not too sure if they're still accepting applications right now. I don't plan on doing any more traveling until the situation stabilizes. I hope you enjoy your experience when you're able to do it in the future!

How likely is it to get a host in Okinawa vs. the other locations in Japan?

I think they're comparable, as long as you contact hosts enough time in advance.

Unfortunately not, but I'd really like to go back! I typically do trips like this whenever I have a long break (winter/summer breaks) or can find time off.

Here's the website: wwoof.net/ Each country has a different sign-up fee. You get access to a list of farms for a year, and you can contact the hosts directly to arrange a volunteer opportunity. =]

Totally avoid Kimberley Ontario, it is flat out exploitation as you just briefly work on a farm and then mostly work in a General Store. It is a complete red flag.
