I'm a correctional officer myself. I am not surprised by their generosity and selflessness. Everyday, I have inmates wish me a good day and to stay safe driving home. The other night when I had to work a double, I had an inmate tell me to get up and walk around and to drink some coffee because he wants to make sure I get home alright. Every. Day. If you give inmates an opportunity to be able to give back to their community, they will take it and run with it. Not every inmate, obviously. But many if not most of them.

We need this in more prisons, away for prisoners to make something of themselves, and give back to society.

Those afghans are a labor of love. I’ve made 2 before, but the pattern I had made has the stars crocheted separately and sewn in.

The repetition of crocheting and knitting has been shown to release serotonin, a natural anti-depressant.
