For someone who was not trained as a dancer, Hugh Jackman moves beautifully. He has a lot of control over his body.

Rogers and Hammerstein couldn't stand to end the first act without a love song so they invented the 'If' love song of which this is the supreme example and almost as good is 'If I Loved You' from Carousel. This is one of the most achingly beautiful love song melodies ever written.

I love this delivery of "they'll see it's alright with me". He sings the line to himself, so she won't hear it, which makes so much more sense than the movie version. So cute!

I'd love to see a mashup of scenes from Oklahoma and Les Mis, song right next to song, or scene right next to scene. Wouldn't that be hilarious?! Or ridiculously insightful; that could work too.

You should watch the version with Gordon Macray. There s no comparison. His voice... it made me fall in love with him when i was a little girl. No one can hold a candle to him.
@missharrington44522 жыл бұрын
Just my humble opinion but I actually prefer this Laurey way more to the movie Laurey... I find the movie Laurey very 1 dimensional. Josefina here is perfect because she plays Laurey's multi layers. The whole point of this song is supposed to be them trying to avoid actually saying how they both feel about each other and so the over the top cocky responses, hard to get comes across well, to then break these barriers when really need when Laurey needs Curly and it's got so much more impact. To reveal their love at the end of this would be boring! Also, Josefina may be not what everyone wants with the accent or singing but she has a beautiful, naturally open singing voice. It's not nasally or breathy, and she's perfect with her ballet and dance ability too to truly carry the role through completely instead of a dance double. "Who laughs at your jokes." That is such a friend trying to deflect the fact they probably always laugh at their jokes.. Ha. Just my opinion but this version of the song trumps the movie version by a mile!

Why do they think up stories that link my name with yours? Why do the neighbors gossip all day behind their doors? I know a way to prove what they say is quite untrue Here is the gist, a practical list of dont's for you Don't throw bouquets at me Don't please my folks too much Don't laugh at my jokes too much People will say we're in love Don't sigh and gaze at me Your sighs are so like mine Your eyes mustn't glow like mine People will say we're in love Don't start collecting things Give me my rose and my glove Sweetheart, they're suspecting things People will say we're in love Some people claim that you are to blame as much as I Why do you take the trouble to bake my favorite pie? Grantin' your wish I carved our initials on that tree Just keep a slice of all the advice ya give so free Don't praise my charm too much Don't look so vain with me Don't stand in the rain with me People will say we're in love Don't take my arm too much Don't keep your hand in mine Your hand feels so grand in mine People will say we're in love Don't dance all night with me 'Til the stars fade from above They'll see it's all right with me People will say we're in love Hey! If there's anybody out and around this yard that can hear my voice I want 'em to know that Miss Laurey Williams is my girl! Curly! Hah-ha! And she went and got me to ask her to marry me! They'll hear you all the way to Catoosie! Let 'em! Let people say we're in love Who cares what happens now? Just keep your hand in mine Your hand feels so grand in mine Let people say we're in love Starlight looks well on us Let the stars beam from above Who cares if they tell on us Let people say we're in love

Richard Rodgers arguably the greatest writer of show melodies combined with Oscar Hammerstein the greatest lyricist of show songs having their extraordinarily beautiful, romantic and touching song being butchered and mangled. If ever an actor and actress, a director and and a musical director got it wrong it was in this act of crude wanton destruction.

They’re good. But tame. It feels kinda like schoolyard flirtation. Rebecca Naomi Jones and Damon Daunno dialed it up to eleven to make it feel like they were seconds away from jumping each others bones. This is playfully annoyed “people will say we’re in love.” The revival is passion simmering beneath resentment. This is charming. But it’s got some tone issues when you shift from this to encouraging a man to kill himself to murder that is just accepted by the townsfolk. The revival keeps the darker adult themes throughout the show in a way that’s maybe less fun but more interesting.

Hugh is so freaking amazing, but this feels a little...unromantic. They do it so perfectly in the movie, showing Curly’s sweet and affectionate behavior with Laurie.
@bradweston53423 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's like the characters are playing it for laughs instead of the wooing romantic verbal "dance" we see in the movie where they all but admit there affection and you're left shouting at Curly "For God sake just kiss the girl!!" lol

Someone once said this has a lot of sibling energy for a love song, and unfortunately I'm inclined to agree. They lack the chemistry of the BBC Proms and 2019 revival versions. Hugh Jackman I'm so sorry but this performance wasn't it king 😭

Why do you call this the Original London Cast? The original London production opened in 1947 and there was a revival production in 1980s...so this most definitely isn't the OLC.

@@TristanandIsolt It is totally, totally obvious. You spend the entire first act thinking 'will they? won't they?' from the minute she walks out on stage and sasses him with her first line you know they are in love. This song however is about tension. You can't release that tension a quarter of the way into the first act or you have no story. They give into each other in the second act as scripted when they finally admit out loud that they love each other and kiss. Have you even seen the entire show?
