I love how the chicken aren't bothered by the rototiller or lawnmower, and it's like they instinctively know that you're stirring up bugs for them. So they are your little helpers. I'm impressed that the palm of your hands aren't covered in blisters. When it comes to rototilling, it's hard on your hands. My hands are like leather and I still get blisters.

Get old free carpet and lay it between the vege beds - it stops weeds for free. Electric fence around the property - start at 50mm of the ground - so ferrets and stoats get a good zap. Then a few more every 50 to 100mm - then you can have bigger gaps. This will discourage almost everything (and stop the dogs getting out too). Use the same philosophy as you did getting the rotary hoe/tractor - more is better (more powerful unit can be turned down).

What a great piece of equipment. I had a front tine tiller for years...No fun breaking fresh sod. Took me five years to figure this one out. I would dig a row, turn around, dig the return row. The machine was always fighting me, leaning toward the soft freshly dug row. Older gentleman in the neighborhood suggested digging a row, skip three quarters of a row on the return trip...Third pass cut the center you skipped. Tines equally on soft soil on both sides of the 3/4 row. Kidneys and shoulders intact! Love the idea of the farm cart. Again thanks for the great content!

It's a tough thing to use. I kinda figured out I press down and dig the metal bar on the back I to the ground to make it stay still and till, then lift it up when I want to start moving again. Turning is the worst thoth. I'm sure I'll get more used to it in time
@audreydeweese4827

Hi Ken, when tilling if you extend the drag bar it will allow the times to dig deeper. The drag bar is what sticks out behind the tiller, under the handle area. Your instructions may use a different term. When we plant yams, potatoes, carrots a deeper till gives better produce. Great job!
@OKportugal

Brilliant thanks. The instructions were printed on old photocopied paper in Portuguese and Spanish and I had to figure it out as I went. I think I'll get the hand of it soon. Its a lot harder than I expected 😅

To reuse that material, it is better to remove it when not in use! If i dont, when removing place it in the sun with the roots up an then remove the weeds, it prevents the ripping when removing some weeds! Had the same here! Good luck!
@elizabethblane201
@elizabethblane201 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like your fabric was partially buried; it's possible that's why the weeds were growing through it. When you reuse it, lay it on the surface and pin it down with landscape fabric staples (or just make some with wire) and see how that works.

I am pretty convinced that if you have drainage holes in your pots, the gravel/bits of broken pots at the bottom doesn't actually do anything, it does not help with overwatering/root rot/drainage. I was convinced by the video "STOP Putting Gravel At The Bottom Of Your Pots!" from EpicGardening

I would have got the poly tunnel up and running first. I wouldn't have used a rotavator, I would just turn the grass over in clumps and it mulches down, leave it to rot down then add the rotted sheep manure.

Your're doing a nice job as a farmer. good to see the pups and chickens still roaming around. have you considered a portable chicken tractor so that the chickens can fertilize the fields and be safey locked in when you are not home? electric fencing is great too..Gina I hope you are back to 100% on your legs.

you need a ride on mower, cut a bigger border around the house to deter sneaky predators. I have never lost a single hen to a predator. However, a pigeon made a seriously bad decision in trying to steal the chickens food. I thought the pigeon had exploded looking at all the feathers on the ground. Chickens are very defensive.

💕HOPE THIS HELPS 💕To use a Rotavator properly you SHOULD PULL UP WEEDS FIRST OTHERWISE you CAN/WILL spread them around your plot of land seeds & shoots travel & spread🇬🇧For best results on a vegetable garden you Should rotavate vertically and horizontally across your soil 2-3 times you can also do this after adding manure/sand etc... an easy way to mix it into your soil🇬🇧To help the black weed cloth do it’s job you should lay cardboard underneath it but as soon as you see a weed PULL IT OUT🇬🇧💕Many years ago I trained people this method💕
@OKportugal

Thanks. Our sheep manure is already full of weed seeds from the pasture so I just mulched it all up together this time around
@susancollado5290

💕You should make a compost pile with the sheep manure & what you remove from your hen house this will break it down more & give you a better grade compost to mix with your soil, grass cuttings are also great to add to a compost pile💕Although do NOT add food waste to compost pile as this attracts rodents💕

Nooo, it was too short. I want 1h episodes. This was a great one, such hard work both of you!! I was scared about the blades!! Now we want a 1h episode watching you chill out 😎 you should make longer episodes, a 20m one on Sunday is not enough!! Make one a day 😇.

Hard work to prepare the vegetable garden. But look forward to see the result. What will you growing this year? The wild flowers are so beautiful. Are you keeping a small patch as is to enjoy the flowers? How is Gina doing?
@OKportugal
@OKportugal 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Angela, we will go to Fundão market on Monday and buy the veg so it depenfs on what they have. Gina's "lady garden" will be our flower patch. With the summer heat it's impossible to keep a large patch green and watered. Gina is getting better each day ❤️👍

@@OKportugal awesome to read the Gina is doing well. I love her lady garden. Good luck Ken on finding some nice vegetables for the garden. I have been busy too, but more indoors. Just redid some grouting and silicone around the tub. The grouting was a bit of a learning curve, but I got the hang of it and it looks good now. Love that I have a refreshed look in the bathroom. Have a great Sunday!! Greetings from sunny NY.

Thanks.. The tiller was 599 and a mini tractor would have cost around 2500 and another 500 for a rotavator attachment... Also it wouldn't fit in our fenced off veg patch

Hi there...how good is your internet connection and phone signal in this rural property? Do you have a decent broadband or not? If not, how have you solved that problem? I suspect since you're making videos for KZfaq, you would need decent broadband to upload your videos
@OKportugal
@OKportugal 3 жыл бұрын
Portugal has good Internet. In the cities, towns and some villages you can get fibre broadband up to 1gigabit speeds. Unfortunately our farm dosent have fibre so we are using a 4G simcard and mobile broadband. We get 30-40 mbps download speeds and 10-15mbps upload speeds which is fast enough for us to stream 4K content and upload our large KZfaq 40k60 content in a couple of hours. It's pretty cheap too. Costs us about €35 a month 👍
