I was part of a group of young skaters who got the chance to go out on to the ice and skate with her, she couldn't have made it more obvious she didn't want to be there. There's more than just at the Olympics where she acted like this on camera too. Ironically, Tonya Harding was one of the nicest skaters I met, she gave 9 year old me lots of advice on my axel technique.

Queen 벌 they made a movie about tonya because she deserved one, and also her life was far more interesting. there’s a reason no one is making a movie called “i,nancy” or “i,oksana” it’s because tonya needs justice and neither of those women got banned for life

Jacque Jasper i agree, nancy doesn’t need a movie made about her, and i agree that oksanas life wasn’t the best and tragic. but they made a movie about tonya because she got done dirty. she was swiped away from everything she had and had a horrible life, she was abused by everyone around her, the judges hated her for god knows what reason and she lost her father and on top of that she got banned from what kept her happy and living.

The short version Oksana has overcome poverty, death, dissolution of her family, national upheaval & the dissolution of her country. Oksana overcame having no real support from her sport. She has overcome terrible injuries (temporarily paralyzed, gashes to her skating leg & damage to her back) to win (1) the Olympic gold medal. (2) the 1993 world championship (3) to sustain her professional career. Baiul has overcome cultural shock & language barriers. Oksana has overcome betrayals from those close to her, exploitation, physical, mental, emotional & sexual abuse. She's overcome negative exploitative persons who handled her early career who stole from her & mishandled everything. She has overcome the excoriation of the national press that turned against her making her into a villain. It kept throwing every exaggerated failing in her face whenever she appeared at public events. This would've destroyed a lesser person. Even now she is widely promoted as a falling down,skid-row, drunk. This despite that this depiction is questionable at best. Oksana has overcome depression & loneliness having no friends in her field being despised & reviled (because all of them were jealous see Oksana Gritshuk,Ekaterina Gordeeva etc.). Oksana overcame attempts to run her out of America as well as attempts to drive her out of pro figure skating and into obscurity in misguided sinister attempts to legitimize Nancy Kerrigan as Olympic Olympic champion. But Oksana is resilient and comes back fighting.

JJ truth Very well said and I thank you for sharing it. Oksana has overcame so much in her life making a few mistakes along the way, but that is life and all of us make mistakes. I watched the 1994 Olympic games, not because of the controversy, but as I had always done, since watching Dorothy Hamile win the Olympic gold medal when I was 12 years old in 1976. Oksana deserved her gold medal in 1994 because she was the best skater out there, and yes, better than ms sore loser, Nancy Kerrigan. As an American, of course I root for the U.S competitors, but I'm sorry, Oksana won that gold medal fair and square. I have been a fan ever since then.

DeeVaBae CHRONICLES She had a jewelry line on QVC for a time. Oksana had some problems with alcohol acid didn't Al's ways make good decisions, and that could have cost her, too. But I think she should have gotten more attention throughout her career.

Her Dad pissed off when she was little and her mother died when she was still young. Her grandparents died. She was taken in by her trainer but he died within weeks of her mother. She was _extremely_ resilient to survive that.

Bauil is incredible in interview about her mother's death. The way Bauil expresses herself with that myriad twinkling of depth in her voice and face is a wonder, just as her skating was its own rich blend of artistry. What an incredible, poignant clip. I feel that Bauil never lived up to her truest and greatest potential but her skating could be absolutely brilliant and so utterly one-of-a-kind beautiful. Her intensity, and way of skating drew audiences in with great power.

she made a error necause her english she pronounce 4 instead 14 was the aged when her lother dies. tragic was he grew alone with her mother her dsther left te family when she was 1 year old and both granparents from mothers side were already dead and she went to live in the family her coach and the daughter of her coach married the famous skater victor petrenko so he is for her like a brother in law.

People were pissed she won the Olympic gold over Nancy Kerrigan, but very few were aware of the obstacles Oksana had to overcome as well, Kerrigan wasn't the only one. Yes, Oksana kinda fell off the wagon after she emigrated to the U.S. as her alcoholism became fodder. She looks great here as does the ageless Peggy Fleming (well, some plastic surgery doesn't hurt).

The artistic merit should’ve been all 6s. That was perfection incorporating balletic movements from the Dying Swan. She should’ve won by more than she did. Kerrigan keeps bringing up Oksana’s two-footed landings. Judges love artistry, and Kerrigan was outclassed.

Someone going by the name of Garland English here on YT spews the same vitriol under videos over & over, reviling the judges as “Commies” who cheated by giving Oksana the winning edge, stealing the Gold Medal from Garland’s preferred Nancy K. This person’s argument is, Oksana & Nancy were tied artistically & Oksana wrongly won (stealing from Nancy) by one vote in the technical category. This argument coupled with the Commie Rant is supposed to convince us that Nancy should’ve won gold. Like you, I believe Oksana’s artistic scores should’ve been 6.0s across the board for both short & long programs. The fact her artistic perfection garnered lower numbers than it deserved, resulting in a tie with Kerrigan, is the real travesty.

Watched her win the gold on this day. A few years later, she came to live in my home state of CT, and I met her at Lancome where I worked. She was smaller than I expected, but so strong and graceful and it was so lovely to meet her and help her. For some reason, maybe since I am petite and used to dance ballet and have decent legs, people often mistook me for her. Once some waitresses were all nervous waiting on me. "Please don't tell" I said in an accent and they all screamed. So funny. lol But I love Oksana.

She got the gold from a majority of 5 communist bloc judges who were still fighting the cold war. Nancy Kerrigan outskated her by a big margin, and the 4 Western judges gave her the right scores and rightfully deducted from Oksana's score for the physical mistakes she made. The Eastern bloc and they seem to always vote as a bloc, but when they have a majority, you already know how it will turn out. Two of the Western gave Cen Liu of China 2nd place and two other Western judges gave Oksana 2nd place. All 4 of the scores were very close. Nancy definitely won that gold only to be deliberately cheated out of it. It wasn't even close .but the commies had it all figured out ahead of time. They joke about it today. In fact they are laughing their asses off. After Nancy was able to recover from that blow to the knee by the hit man hired by the Tonya Harding group. This really hurt Nancy worse than the blow to the knee. Oksana was not near as mature at age 16 as they say. She gets drunk and crashes her car, endangering other people the following year. She had moved here from the Ukraine. In a video like this it is misleading.

My mother died of ovarian cancer when she was 45 years old and I was 22 at that time. I didn't know this about Oksana's mother but Oksana was my favorite that year and I was rooting for her so hard to win!

I remember seeing her win her gold medal at the Olympics and also seeing the movie they made about her life. I watched it over and over again on vhs (that's how long ago it was lol).. she is captivating.. her swan routines still bring back beautiful memories. Tonight, Pandora's Holiday Moments on Ice aired. I, always think of Oksana Baiul and wish she was touring here in the U.S and near us! My mother and I watched her from the beginning of her skating career. Watched as she went through some rough times. When she came back to skate, I remember telling my mom . She grew so fast, and into such a beautiful woman, I don't think she had time to adjust to her tall legs. No matter, whatever, where ever .,we will never forget how exciting she was to watch. And wish her soooo.... much happiness in her life and her career !

Canada and USA Rock most people's mother's die when they are adults--not children many people grow up having 2 parents. Oksana had no stable upbringing moving from house to house living with strangers. Knowing if she didn't skate & succeed her life was over. Many kids over there were being driven into prostitution or were kidnapped into slavery. To be left on your own as a kid in a nation that is falling apart socially, financially, economically & culturally is like experiencing the trauma of aftermath seen only in war. Research the living conditions of Ukraine in that period of history. Oksana overcame lack of housing, the closing of schools, loss of coaching, food shortages, lack of medical care, money becoming worthless amid currency upheavals, transportation shutdown, fuel & energy shortages amounted to freezing & no lights when it was dark. Fuel shortages & transportation slow downs meant Oksana was unable to compete at many events because airports & trains closed for weeks at a time or cut out certain routes altogether to save fuel. At the Olympics Oksana survived a collision & injuries to compete & win the gold medal. She endured her competitive Olympic career being destroyed from an illegal ban. As a pro she endured agents who stole from her, handlers who pushed her to injury, the media engaging in character assassination. Mentally she had to endure great pressure stemming hostility from other skaters who were gunning to cut down her career. Many attempts to take her livelihood away were made by attacking her reputation & career launched by other skaters & their support teams. Everyone out to tear you down to use you. She went through this at a very young age. Bob Young, the man who was to act her pro coach while in America turned out to be a sex offender & rapist of young skaters. Oksana has overcome a painful skating injury, a displaced lumbar disc in her back which left her quite unable to skate or walk. She could only crawl having to undergo months of rehab. Oksana has overcome more than you ever have at a youthful age.

My middle name is Okssana. My mom added an extra ‘s’. My mom was inspired by the original Oksana, because she was so young when she won her first metal. My mom also found out that Oksana means “triumph”. That being said, I’ll always carry this woman in my heart.

Brought tears to my eyes. I've always been a fan. She's very genuine and wears her feelings on her sleeve. Not good for this world to be like this, but makes her the wonderful person and sportswoman that she is. She overcame so much in life and is still around. I'm so glad for her.

I love you Oksana your a great person, but most of all God loves you for bringing your story to others in your situation too. I love watching the Olympics all my life. I lost my mom twice once to alcoholism, and next she died from liver disease, psyrhosis of the liver. So I know the feeling of being abandoned, but we are not abandoned by God he blessed us in so many ways.

Oksana will always be one of my favorite skaters she definitely was the most elegant skater and she truly deserved the gold medal she won. 지금은 거의 같은 사람인지도 모를 정도로 변해버린 모습, 술과 마약에 쩔은듯한 피부에 나이에 비해 팍싹간 모습. 새삶의 기회가 주어줘도 안되는 사람은 안되는 듯. 1994년 올림픽 금메달 딴게 결과적으론 더 불행하게 된듯한 이율배반

Oksana Baiul's life is tragic in 2 ways. 1. She lost her grandparents and mom at a young age which motivated her to a gold medal at the Olympics. And 2. She became a alcoholic and a diva that burned down a lot of bridges in the figure skating world due to it. She's doing wonderful now but here life was a rollercoaster.

Having to lose your grandparents a year apart from each other. Father leaving you after you were little. Then your mother died when you was 13. She somehow still seem to smile.

I really admire the fact that after she won the gold medal she never felt the need to come back and prove herself again. She went out on top as it should be. So many others that win gold medals compete over and over again, until they realize their not on top, and that's not good.

I disagree. Those skaters who love skating still go on ice performance. It is not a matter of proving something. They truely love ice skating. She performed on stars on ice. Her performance was below expectations most time where that gave her fame and fortunes. If she hated so much she should have quit performing in public.
