“Simply put, the term oktavist is most precisely used to refer to basses that sing down to contra B flat and lower in a choral setting. Basso profundo is Italian in origin, and has a long history of clear definition within the operatic tradition, being subdivided into the categories of lyric and dramatic. While the term basso profundo comes from Italy and the opera tradition, oktavist has its roots in the choirs of Russia.”
Information, videos and notes taken mostly from the Oktavism channel. Big thanks to them for existing.
A compilation of some significant low notes from oktavists and the like.
There are inevitably mistakes in this video. Please let me know of any you find.
I don’t own the music, videos, photos, or anything in this video. Sue me.

There was a post on face book , asking if Avi Kaplan, TimFoust, Tim Storms and other acapella basses could do Oktavism( without extend techniques). Elliot Robinson's response to this : Definitely no. Also I learnt from Jay Fleming ( Oktavism channel) that Eric Alatorre's voice is so resonant that it causes YOUR chest to vibrate, if you were to have a conversation with him . Elliott described Alatorre's voice as Stupid( In the best way). If Elliott, a bass with such a great calibre , speaks like that, you can only imagine the depth of these guys voices.

Reuben Thomas honestly I think weirdly Geoff would be the most useful for Oktavism (even though he’s possibly the least basso Profundo of the 3) cuz of his subharmonics though we’ve never heard him project them

@@matthewdockray9745, I've heard VoicePlay live at a small venue and Geoff's subharmonics are oddly loud... you could hear him slightly unamplified in with the sound system. I have an overlap of my chest and use of subharmonics around E1, which my E1 sub is stronger, but my chest-fry is stronger at C#1 than my subharmonic is... but on-mic, the subharmonic sounds better. Geoff's subs, again, are WAY stronger than I expected.

0:52 ,I've seen other true basses(who can project a low C and lower in choral settings) sing this part of the aria 'Der Rosenkavilier', all them sound good, except when they sing the low C. Barring Moll, most of the other's low C sound like a barely audible croak, not at all musically pleasant. Only a true basso profundo like Moll could project the low C so effortlessly ,at the same time making it sound musical.This just goes to show how demanding opera is.Moll could go down to a decent low F(F1), and he has a recorded Bb1 'O Sancta justitia ' , and the video of the it is here on KZfaq.I know it's an unfair comparison but if Geoff,Tim or Avi were to sing this, Geoff and Tim wouldn't be heard on the last note, and Avi's usually beautiful and melodious C2 would sound like somewhat audible burp/croak.I can only imagine what it must feel like to hear Moll blast first octave notes in resonant rooms/halls.

What’s the difference between oktavist and basso profoundo in range?
@matthewdockray9745
@matthewdockray9745 4 жыл бұрын
That’s kind of a hard question to answer as they’re both different things. Basso Profundo is a voice type. Oktavist is a role within a group (singing the bass part an octave lower). I think generally a Basso Profundo needs to be able to project a Bb1 (according to Glenn Miller), though this does vary with definition. An oktavist’s range is sort of irrelevant imo as long as they can hit the notes. Pavel Myakotin of the Kovcheg ensemble is the oktavist for their group yet he is only a baritone, but uses subharmonics and strohbass to achieve the low notes. An oktavist’s part goes as low as the performer is able to I suppose. I’m not too sure on any of this so checking out Oktavism.com might be helpful and have the answer you’re looking for, but it’s probably good for someone in the oktavist role to have a G1 in their range

Bass Nerdd indeed. He’s actually a baritone. His full voice is roughly F2 - G4. E2 - Bb1 is strohbass, anything lower is subharmonics

powerlifting it was said by fellow oktavist Vladimir Kozelov. You can find the quote and more information in the replies in the top comment of this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8Coi5dm27fZcqM.html

@@matthewdockray9745 yeah i think there is a little lost in translation with the guy who is talking about what Kozelov said; I've chatted with Kozelov and others in the group it is chest down to C2 or so and then the subharmonics below that.

King Louis XIII had a splendid bass voice. King Louis XIII could very easily hit a C1 note since he was an oktavist. 🎭🩰🎨
