Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that a company's bottom line is their net earnings. The thumbnail was not a typo. It was subtle mockery directed at money hungry companies like olay who will do and say anything to stay relevant and prevent their stock from dropping in price. They're loyal to their shareholders, not to their consumers. There has also been some conflict around the skin lightening aspect of the video. Just want to be clear that I do not support criticizing POC for choosing to lighten their skin. This is a symptom of a much deeper and systematic issue that varies across geographies. American companies have no right to continue to reap the rewards of colonialism while pretending to support BLM. I can personally say that, as a South Asian living in america, the global infatuation with whiteness has caused me a great deal of self-loathing and shame. Please consider this when you continue the discussion.

As a white person who gets most of my sunscreen recommendations from KZfaq, I have mostly exclusively used Korean and Japanese chemical sunscreens as they're so much more advanced than American options , but also I accidentally got a mineral version of a Korean sunscreen without realizing and it leaves a whitecast on me and I'm very pale. So I just try to stay away from mineral sunscreens regardless. But finding out that olay is reusing footage for other products is disgraceful, and very clearly a marketing grab. Thanks for making us aware and for all the work you clearly put into this video! Always enjoy your content.

And I oop- And he oop- And we oop- edit: Seriously, though. I’ve been really disappointed in my brown friends for their apathy for black issues this year. I’ve always tried to educate myself on issues that disproportionally affect brown people - Kashmir, the clownery at the US border, Gaza, etc. so the lack of reciprocity has been sad. Thank you for being an ally.

This is so important and this comment means so much to me. We can't only self advocate or we will just end up reproducing hierarchies in our movements. It's also important to be aware of positionality and not to overshadow the voices of people you're being an ally for. I try to constantly challenge my power and privilege but sometimes that can lead to apathy tbh. I think ultimately we need to keep connecting with each other and honoring one another to build empathy and become better at advocating for others without overstepping. Thank you again for your kind words.

I tried this sunscreen because I was excited about a mineral sunscreen with no whit not white caste buuuuutttt my lord my skin started burning The area under my eyes had a bunch of little red dots that looked like blood was coming out. I didn’t think much of this and thought it was because my skin was so dry due to the Tretinoin I’m using. After your video I looked up nano technology zinc oxide and found that it can be harmful on “unhealthy skin” or skin with tears which is exactly my skin right now due to tretinoin it’s super sensitive and flaky . I’ve had allergic reactions since I started so I wonder if this is the reason. And i don’t like what they stand for as a company so I’m not repurchasing.

I agree that the niacinamide concentration in this product is negligible being less than 1% (since it is below phenoxyethanol). However; peptides in general are effective even in EXTREMELY low low concentrations (even less than 0.001%). This is proven in studies. Not trying to defend this clearly AWFUL and greedy company. Just wanted to specifically elaborate on this unique fact about peptides that I recently learned and thought was interesting.

Not sure if you know this, but any ingredient at or below one percent can be placed in any order (below ingredients with more than 1%). The entire ingredients list isn't sorted. Zinc oxide nanoparticles less than 100nm in diameter that aren't aggregated into larger particles are translucent simply because of the relative size of light and the particles. The white cast with this product is insane.

I ended up finding this video because I just bought this product... But only because it's on sale at walgreens for 27.99$, with a 15$ coupon. There is another promo code to get 15% off of your order in the app if you chose to do curbside pickup, and you get 12.80$ back in store credit as well. With all those discounts, I paid one dollar and eight cents for it... Therefore, this product is being sold for a freaking dollar now 😂🤣 I wonder if Olay is doing bad as a company financially ever since the pandemic, because that's what it looks like.

Raw Tin Skin I have a cosmetics scandal for you. Paula’s Choice SPF have mostly been downgraded to SPF 15 in Australia cause their UVA protection is around 5. Check out the Aussie PC website. They are still sold as SPF 50 else where. Broad spectrum in Australia means their UVA protection has to be a third of SPF value. Won’t be using PC SPF as their UVA is shockingly poor.

Interesting video but I honestly don't see whitening creams as so problematic, white people use tanning products to get darker so I think that adjusting our own skin tone is totally fine especially when we only try to correct hyper and ipo pigmentation and get a more even tone. Having said that the fake videos and recycled ad is appalling and the product seems too expensive for such a low SPF. Anyway I've tried tons of physical sunscreens but even the best Asian ones leave a cast especially after multiple applications. Just use a chemical one.
@Tmbpdbt
@Tmbpdbt 3 жыл бұрын
Those whitening creams and marketing are less about even tone and hyperpigmentation and more about changing the shade of your skin. I have Indian friends who dislike their “dark” skin and want to be whiter looking. They have been sold a Eurocentric standard of beauty and have internalized it. I don’t think a white person tanning is the same motivation.
@frugalskin
@frugalskin 3 жыл бұрын
This topic deserves a video of its own but I totally see the argument and actually an olay representative said the same thing comparing lightening to tanning. Once we start to peel back the layers behind this ideal and really challenge the privilege of being able to tan yet still maintain status as a white person in a globe that's totally infatuated with it, the argument starts to get more nuanced. I also do not think anyone should be criticized for their choice to lighten their skin. Even I use products that have a potentially lightening effect but I use it solely for my hyperpigmentation. Thank you so much for watching and yes totally agree on the use of chemical sunscreens. They're much more effective.
@philippillis9393
@philippillis9393 3 жыл бұрын
@@frugalskin I totally share your concern tho it's not like I wanna dismiss your reasoning and pretend this is not an issue but I also think it's always difficult to pin point if we're talking about internalized racism due to imposed eurocentric beauty standards (which vary from country to country and place to place even among caucasian European populations) or simply personal, free and informed choices. Everything that somewhat changes our appearance whether it's a cream, plastic surgery, body modification, tattoos or simply fashion is, as McLuhan said, a form of communication after all so the way we choose to portray ourselevs of course ends up being influenced by society standards in a way or another. Personally I have pretty fair skin but in order to protect it from sun damage and treat discoloration due to a light form of seborrheic dermatitis I use lots of UVA/UVB filters and lightening products to even out my skin tone consciously knowing that I actually look best with some tan. And people are vocal about it telling me I look sick and I need to stay in the sun more because I don't look healthy while in fact I look like this because i want to be healthier and lol.

@@Tmbpdbt that's some great generalizing right there. Good you have Induan friends but it majes you no expert on Indians. Your Indian friends may hate their skin color but it does not mean most Indians do. Frankly, Indians suffer from pigmentation issues. See Dr. Vanita Rattan's channel. This tired old trope of Indians wanting to live up to Eurocentric beauty is up there with poverty porn. Indians look to other Indians for our standard of beaut y. It is not Eurocentric. We have long hair and great skin ranging from light to black. You should be careful repeating racist tropes about how we hate ourselves and are trying to be white. There are some Indians who MAY feel that way. This does not mean the majority do. For the record, we are Indians and not POC. Indians with our own set of beauty concerns that predate colonialism and have zero to do with BLM. Don't over generaluze from your couple of supposed Indian friends or this guy here. This is their and his opinion. It is not the majority. Go educate yourself beyond the prosaic colonial trope. I am yet to find an Indian who wants to be white, black, Chinese. they are just giving the consumers what they want, or at least they think they want. If they don't do it, another group of assholes will take their place in doing it. People want to look lighter in the east because traditionally, only the affluent had pale skin from not having to go outside every day to work on the fields. In the west, it is the opposite (are self tanners evil now too? commercials that shame pale skin by explicitly saying they need golden tan?) As someone with pale skin, I used to be teased for my pale skin, which made me tan in the sun on purpose. Now i'm still suffering from the sun damage. Advertisers are the least racist of all people, behind perhaps only evolutionists and geneticists, because " the consumer has no color" - mad men. EDIT: GREAT CATCH ON THE FACT THAT REUSE THE SAME COMMERCIAL!! NOW, THAT REALLY IS CRIMINAL. FTC SHOULD BE NOTIFIED.

1) Mineral sunscreens ALL leave a cast, the intensity varies depending on the formulation. 2) Recycling footage for marketing purposes, it’s a common practice amongst companies, and it’s not exclusive to POC models. Footage from models of all races gets reused. In most instances, models get an additional fee every time the footage is used (had you actually done your research, you would have known this very accesible fact) 3) This is more of a brand review, than a product review. Which would be fine, had you not mislabeled your video. If you’re doing a product review, we expect an actual review of the product for the majority of the time, not a pretentious clout chase masqueraded as a pseudo social crusade. I don’t particularly like P&G, but you’re reaching so far, it almost makes me like them. 4) The satisfaction we take as a society in deconstructing, rather than building, it’s actually what alarms me the most. You being a prime example. The only thing I took from this video, is how deeply ingrained is the desire for validation and popularity in our society, where people like you try to recreate behaviors that have granted others, the social acceptance and validity, that you very clearly desire. 5) Maybe you work to improve yourself, as hard as you worked to try to cancel others.

This is not your fault! These companies need to quit making these racist advertisements that tie whiteness to beauty. I use some ingredients that could potentially lighten the skin, but I use it to fade dark marks and treat other issues primarily. I would say if you can access similar products that aren't sold by these problematic companies that would be best. For example I use tretinoin prescription and a bespoke azelaic acid to treat dark marks without contributing to the skin whitening industry. Hope that helps.
