I remember seeing Santa Fe commercials with Chico. Later when I was in middle school I used to change buses at the depot in San Diego and chat with the switch crew. In 1974 I began a forty one year career with Santa Fe and later BNSF. I guess I was Santa Fe all the way!

Chico remains a loveable reminder of a once great railroad. As a kid I wanted to dress like him at Halloween. I got to and got lots of candy! I still love Chico!

@@WAL_DC-6B Yes there was. What I do remember is the narrator of the commercial in a very excitable tone yelling "THE SUPER CHIEF!" And then he proceeded to run down the list of amenities passengers would be entitled to on the Super Chief while a film ran in the background depicting passengers in the dining car or in their sleepers.

Chico was the creation of advertsing giant Leo Burnett of Chicago, the same firm that created Tony the Tiger, Jolly Green Giant, Pillsbury Doughboy, Charlie the Tuna, and many others. Chico promoted the AT&SF railroad for decades, from 1946 to 1990. This commercial is from 1962.

I have a coffee mug with Chico, the ATSF logo, and the words "Santa Fe All the Way". Love it. Also have a small notepad with Chico and some ATSF U-Boats on the cover. ATSF map on the back cover. Never used it. Love this commercial.

It's too fast. They sped the film up about 50% for the effect. Incidentally, the locomotives are a quad set of Alco PA1 units. Arguably one of the most beautiful locomotives in the world.

An ad that, while probably not the most PC, is still charming nonetheless. I recently read the memoirs of a gentleman who spent many years working for the Santa Fe, and while one of my favorite railroads is the one that ran through my home state (profile pic should give a clue), I can appreciate other lines such as the ATSF, and have the Judy Garland song in my music library.

"Chico," the fictional Indian kid (as the Santa Fe Railroad described him) was the mascot and spirit of the Santa Fe. He was used in many Santa Fe Railroad advertisements to promote passenger (ended in 1971) and freight service well into the 1980s.
