Old Books by Candlelight Step by Step Acrylic Painting on Canvas for Beginners

In this video, we're gonna get together and learn how to paint old books and a melting candle with a palette knife. I left the titles of the books blank so you can fill them in with your favorites!
I’m painting on a 16x20-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.
I used:
• A 2-inch flat brush
• A small diamond shaped palette knife
• A small round brush for signing
I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Mars Black
• Titanium White
• Burnt Umber
• Burnt Sienna
• Yellow Oxide (or Ochre)
• Hooker's Green
• Alizarin Crimson
• Phthalocyanine Blue
• Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue
• Bronze (metallic - optional)
But you can use any colors you like.

This is a great palette knife video that everyone can do. I really like how we can see how all the different angles and different pressures work. Blending the colours and highlights were good too. My favourite part was the flame. You explain everything very well Jane and Vince makes sure we can see every step which makes it easy for us to learn from you. Thanks!

I just finished painting it. Did I ever learn a lot! You make it look so easy. I now know that all palette knives aren't the same. I had a hard time because my diamond shape was too long and too narrow. I enjoyed painting this and I'm going to do it again so I can practice but I'm getting a better shape diamond this time. ;)

This caught my eye as I was scanning the recommended videos. I'd done some old books in watercolors and I really liked it. It's amazing what just a stack of old frayed books can do to inspired. I haven't tried the palette knife yet, but your application was great to watch, especially the texturing. . I love the painting; the subject matter just resonates with me. I've never used a pallet knife but I love the effect the knife gives. It's not as smooth as a paint brush would have done. I think I will be giving this a try! Very nice video and a beautiful painting, as always. :)

Thank you! The palette knife is so much fun. There's an element of control you have to give up to use it for sure, but the texture and the way it lightly smooths colors together is worth it :)

Haha! Palette knives can be tricky at first, but once you stop trying to use it like a brush and stop trying to force it to do things a certain way, you'll love it!!
