Hi JoJo, you can learn to ring at any age. If you go to ltr.cccbr.org.uk you can register to learn and you will be contacted by a ringing tutor in your area. Good luck, hope you start ringing soon!

It’s a little tricky at the moment with the restrictions, but honestly pop down to your local tower on a practice night. I did 2 years ago and haven’t looked back. Off the back of one visit I got a great hobby and some great new friends. Aside from that, young bell ringers are in short supply!

Old Clee are an interesting ring...just a shame the ringing room is also used as a kitchen. I remember ringing for weddings there and the dappy old verger used to come in and rinse his cups out WHILST WE WERE RINGING. If everything was cleared out of there there could easily be room for another 2 or 3 bells

I guess it was lucky that the bell was up at the balance point when the rope broke? If it had broken after you had hauled hard on it, might the bell have gone all the way around and busted something, since you wouldn't have had the rope to catch and slow it down?
@SusieSuperlative2 жыл бұрын
She's a good ringer so was pulling just the right amount. Pulling too hard could have broken the stay when the rope broke. The (replaceable) stay is designed to break to prevent any serious damage if/when something like this happens .

It's probably easier with the bell moving, because that way either it rings itself down or the stay breaks, which also gets it down, making replacing the rope easier

How did this rope break she can't ring the bell
@SusieSuperlative2 жыл бұрын
If you look at the rope you can see where someone has tried to mend it with white and black tape, which doesn't work, especially on a bell weighing over 0.4 ton! We were visiting ringers there and not responsible for maintaining these ropes so we had no idea that it was incredibly weak beneath the tape. She IS a good ringer and rang the bell very well - so well that, as you can see, the bell stood beautifully at backstroke when the rope broke; a less-experienced ringer may have broken the stay, etc.
@Jackzilla20062 жыл бұрын
@@SusieSuperlative yes but they can get another rope to tied around the bell
@SusieSuperlative2 жыл бұрын
@@Jackzilla2006 No one know that the rope was going to break. As visitors it was not in our remit to maintain or change the ropes. A non-ringing church official was on hand, so after the break we had access to the intermediate chamber to ring the treble down. As there were no spare ropes present we managed with the broken tail end tied on with a knot - not ideal I know, but as there was a very long draught and no guides it fulfilled its purpose with experienced ringers.
@explodinglemons20822 жыл бұрын
She's actually an incredibly good ringer because the bell didn't move after the rope snapped. The rope is in incredible tension at the point in which it snapped. It can happen to anyone. The fact the bell set itself on her backstroke and didn't continue to ring itself downward shows that her backstroke was indeed, perfect, and the bell was stood brilliantly on the balance. I wouldn't like to try and get it down though.
