This performance is quite good. But the original version is a masterpiece - combination of the greatest music director (A. R. Rahman) and the greatest singer (Lata Mangeshkar) from India. You'll be mesmerized.

AR Rahman is a Oscar winning Composer/producer . Slumdog Millionaire is his international well known composition for which he received 2-Oscars in 2009 . His works are really exceptional . Hope you check more of his works soon . Cheers!

@@yashghoderao46 don't be stupid. I'll leave it there. Rahman is a minion compared to some of the composers mentioned in the comments. And he plagiarized a lot of his sounds from indie pop and mainstream pop. He's not even in the top 1000.

That ending is a sound so close to a "home" feeling in India. You're analysis is spot on. As a Indian American, the entire composition to me models the essence of growing up with two cultures. Hearing that ending and seeing you get it too was so wonderful!

There is Indian folk, Indian Classical, some Indo-western fusion, some Jazz - and singing in two languages : Hindi (a North Indian one) and Malayalam (a South Indian language) !!!!! Go figure!!! 😀😄

The original track was sung by the late Legendary Lata Mangeshkar ji. She was 68 years old when she sang this lyrical, musical masterpiece. Maniratnam, Lata Ji, A R Rehman - that's the A Team

I like to think that most of our music (from South Asia) is cyclical (similar to our ancient philosophy). The beginning is gentle, with the music evolving like opening flower petals one by one, growing as it evolves, blossoming to full potential and then towards the end slowly reaches a peaceful almost meditative conclusion, with enough of the smell of the flowers lingering in your soul for the longest time. Both the beginning and end are gentle blends into the eternal flow of the universe.

@@JUPITER69966 It is not a subcontinent. Asia joins Europe. You don't call either as subcontinent.. Rather as continent. Why. Thay are different. The land is different Culture is different. The civilisational ethos different. The European East of Urals are Caucasisn. And west of urals are Chinese - Korean -Japanese, Mongols, Turkic. Former Abrahamic, divisive,, and aggressive latter were essentially unitary, agnostic - atheistic, Tribal - Clannish, Buddhist - Confucian. This meant Asian Continent. These are temperature and Tundra land extending to arctic ocean However there is an land South of Himalayas and an extension till Caspian sea also and any thing below is indian continent. Not a that are flush with water draining into Indian ocean. The culture, is very different. The people who occupy the land essentially an indic civilisation. The coastal Chinese are mixture of Indic Buddists and confucian people.

Most of your music is very vibrant and soothing to the ears and your underground artists is amazing like Cheb I Sabbah, Spek, Asain Dub Foundation and State of Bengal etc. The instruments are also different and noteworthy to play mainly the the tabla, but that is a lot of people who likes the tabla lol.

I would strongly recommend you explore the discography of A R Rahman. His unmatched genius in weaving harmoniously intricate and complex genre-hopping melodies has been demonstrated in each and every of his compositions, consistently over the last 30 years… A musicologist like you, with your knowledge and analytical approach would be better placed to decipher the magic he has mesmerised us constantly with…Treats the west have so missed… worth every bit of your time..every song a study in mastery… Beautifully expressed reactions, befits the composition, thank you

This is just a one piece of gem fro him...there are other master pieces which blow our minds instantly. He has started his music composition since 1992 officially. His first album called "Roja" itself is the master piece..listen to those songs!

Indian carnatic form of music has a lot of similarities with jaaz(raag) sometimes more progressive than jaaz. Percussion players were brilliant especially the bassist. Special mention for harshita krishnan in the antara section (trying to squeeze the lower notes). Anitta Philip is sometimes spotted with AR during live gigs.

Berkeley took something that was good and took it to a level that was way better than the original in all aspects. I don’t have the technical words and phrases but I felt the same about the nuances, interludes and jeyaraman’s flawless dovetailing of the vocal. That sound signature will broach most souls 😊

There is a lot to learn in your observation/evaluation of this particular piece - considering this is a very popular piece by A.R. Rahman and rearranged by Annette Phillip of Berklee Indian Ensemble. Its also interesting to know how one composer views the work of another.

There is no unified "indian music". It varies from region to region. Classical southern music (karnatic music) is not same as north indian music.

All country's and community's have great music...we have to listen them first. Moreover this composition is contemporary Indian music inspired by western and other regions music...u can see guitar, piano, drums etc. which are not classical instruments. Indian classical ((Hindustani and Carnatic music) is Indian music . Its fusion.

You couldn’t be more wrong. This version is far more pleasing to foreign ears… this has a beautiful blend of soft calming Indian classical music. The original is just a basic Bollywood song that would bore the average non Indian listener

@@ReeceDhillon I guess you're more wrong here, at least to most of the people. This version is good, but the original is so much better. and I'm not talking about only Indian listeners, knew many non-Indians who preferred the original over this one, but haven't encountered anyone (until you) to do the opposite. whatever, opinions differ. but 'The original is just a basic Bollywood song' - this sentence is what that's completely wrong. The original is a fantastic fusion of Indian classical and western genres, not just an average Bolly song (no way).

Bhangra, Qawwali, raga… those that react to the original only react nicely out of politeness and respect because they know Lata is loved by Indians. But Latas voice does not suit most songs because it’s too high pitched.

The composer is a legend and two times Oscars winner. This is not the original composition. You should react to some of his original composition. Recommended ones are: Roja, Dil Se, Bombay, Taal, Rangeela, Saathiya, Guru l, Tamasha etc.

3:48 great catch on the delay, Rehman absolutely LOVES to play around with tempo in his compositions, throughout his entire career. A vocal track that's slightly off beat, an instrumental that catches you off guard, he likes to surprise the audience and it's really a lesson in effective bending of the rules.

Man if you're breaking the composition down this deep, I wonder why didn't you go through other A R rahman compositions.. Music albums like Dil Se re, Ghajini, Lagaan, Swadesh, Taal, Roza and many more.. ohh god.. those are jaw dropping in composition, feel, uniqueness.. ahh A R Rahman is called a melody king! (Also, this song is composed by A R Rahman but this version is remade by these guys. So the original is original)

No… the original is basic. Indians may like it, but it offers nothing new. This version is not perfect but mixes a calming Indian classical music which is universally enjoyed by foreigners. The original is a Bollywood song…

@mimigirl that’s the state of Indian music. Bollywood has killed off gems in the Indian music industry. Lata may have sang well, but her vocal tones did not fit most songs. Way too high pitched

this is basically stylised jazzed South Indian Carnatic classical music composed by AR Rehman himself ... he has done incredible fusion of western and Indian Classical - both soulful Hindustani [of Persian origins] and crispy Carnatic)

That was a Sarod, the string instrument at the end. Its not a sitar. Ustad Amjad Ali plays the Sarod but Pandit Ravi Shankar used to play sitar. Left this note for you to listen more to the legends who pioneered these instruments.

The instrument in the end was Sarod, it’s fretless, used for microtones and otherwise. Sitar is beautiful too. :)
