Thanks for posting this, I watch often to see a master at work. There’s really is something to be said for spontaneity, creativity, but unending knowledge in therapy. I also see my own work and its development and further understanding of his work. And PS, Cancer CAN and DOES come through not wanting to be around. Carl also knew that overeating, obesity is a hallmark of trauma. Brilliant, brilliant. Thanks Carl.

I am curious as to where you learned that medical information.

The way he addresses the weight issue was scandalous for me. I'm not sure exactly what to think of it, but I do think it is indicative of his approach...say what the truth is and let the clients work at handling it.

Dr. Whitaker I believe borrowed the husband approach from a Milton Erickson.

This is heavy. But you know, there's the subtext of the frisbee and that, to me, is the part of Whitaker that isn't mentioned. He was very much alive.

Single parents are a reality, but it isn't a "good" situation. Kids can and will adapt, but sometimes they adapt in very unhealthy ways. Boundaries are so important and healthy roles are as well. Letting children be children and requiring adults to be adults is so important. Unfortunately, that concept is getting lost in our anti-authority culture.

His views on a single parent family seem a little outdated

Well, this was the late sixties/early seventies. So it is a bit outdated.

Dr. Whitaker's views on single parent families seem a little prescient.

Mine are outdated as well then, multi parent families who are egalitarian and unified do much better than single parent. In my experience as a family therapist when one parent abandons or is less than present, even in co-parenting situations, then problems arise. There’s the twin pillars of masculine and feminine that are being denied, and kids need guidance in both, experience in both.

@@dreamerweaver Masculine and feminine are less important pillars than love, support, and respect. Good guidance and open-mindedness will allow a child to navigate both on their own
